Notes:
And as Stone Ruination IPA turns 10, we thought we’d make ourselves a nice little birthday present to celebrate. But what kind of selfish jerks would we be if we didn’t share?! Behold, the Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA. (Clever name, eh? That’s why us folks in the Marketing Dept. get the big bucks!) It’s an amped-up version of Stone Ruination IPA, with a bit more malt to bring the abv up from 7.7% to 10.8%, and a very heavy dose of hops. “Classic” Ruination uses 2.5 pounds of hops per barrel–which is more than double the amount we use in any other of our core beers–but for Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA, we went double again, using an impressive 5 pounds of hops per barrel, including about a pound each of Citra and Centennial in the dry hop. (Hell. Yes.)

Purchased 2 bottles of this and couldn't help but drink both in one evening.
A - Cloudy amber in color with a bright white head that shrunk and left just a small line of suds. The lacing is very nice and attractive.
S - Fresh hops along with fresh tropical fruits. I get some grapefruit, passion fruit and pineapple.
T - Very nice bitter hoppiness that is balanced out by a sweet and subtle malt backbone along with the tropical hop flavors. You can taste the alcohol a bit but not much to be honest. For 10.8 percent this is well done.
M - Syrupy yet smooth and a bit oily. As some might say a bit chewy but easy to drink.
O - I am very impressed and actually like this one better than the regular Ruination. I saw some reviews that said this was too malty but I don't get that at all. This to me is a spot on example of a great west coast DIPA. Cheers!

Let it be known, this is the first Stone beer I've had since my first encounter with Arrogant Bastard some years ago. I remember being completely off-put by the strong flavor and even as my taste has developed, I've been apprehensive to try this one...
But then, it came up at my work for no more than the regular Ruination, and knowing that it's a special batch and won't be around long, I decided to pull the trigger and buy it.
One thing is for certain though -- I'm glad my palate has developed enough to appreciate this beer, because it is fantastic. Let's review...
A - Poured from a 22oz bomber in to a 14oz Widmer chalice. Darker than expected with a nice rich orange/amber color. The head is nice and about a finger tall.
S - The added maltiness is definitely present in the nose with aromas of bread primarily. Also: obviously, hops. It smells fantastic. Citrusy and a little sweet in the hop aromas, plus pretty fresh. It's been in my fridge for about a week but I know it's not very old so that helps.
T - There's a tiny bit of malt in the sip but as soon as this beer fills your mouth, it's hops all the way. Dank, citrusy, sweet and bitter hops. Minimal alcohol in the taste, impressive for a beer that's nearly 11%. Very well made, especially hoppy but not excessively so. Certainly not your typical one-dimensional hop palate attack. Lingering bitterness sticks in your mouth for the aftertaste, begging you to take another sip...
M - About medium, well carbonated without being excessive. Crisp and a little dry, another characteristic that makes you want to take another drink.
O - Overall this is a fantastic beer and if you enjoy IPAs of any description it's worth checking out. I feel, too, that it was a great way to re-introduce myself to Stone brewery now that my palate is more refined. It's definitely a hop-lover's kind of beer, and one you won't regret buying.

Highly sought after beer. I was traveling to the USA, so the time frame was just ok for me to be able to grab a bottle of this limited release. Thanks To the Winooski Beverage Warehouse for keeping a bottle for me!
This beer pours amber orange in colour, hazy, and forming a large, thick, white creamy head.
N: Fragrances are literally BURSTING out of the glass, wow! You can smell it from a few feet away! Pink pineapple dominates here and it is strong. Mandarine/Orange pulp, Mango, Watermellon, Cannabis and pine needles. Mouthwatering, exquisite!!! Certainly one of the best smells ever encountered for a beer.
M&T: Medium to Full bodied, Carbonation is perfect for this DIPA. Not as stringent as expected from the tons of hops used in this brew. Feels a bit oily. Herbal tones from the hops are present. Bitterness is aggressive right from the start, persist for an eternity and it’s damn good! I find this 10th anniversary version a bit more balanced than the regular one, probably because of more malt used. It gives a sweeter (if I can say so!) side and brings interesting notes of biscuit dough. Earthyness feeling in the middle of tasting and finishes on a peppery side. Flavours of pink pineapple dominates, citrus pulp, biscuit, watermelon on the sweet side.
Overall: For me this one is exceptional, world-class! A rare exemple of a near-perfect DIPA. Of course, ones will surely not like it because it tends to be way over the top for newbies, but for hopheads, it is a must. As it was not intended to replace the regular Ruination, I can’t compare it directly with it, but it is an amazing version of it. This 10th anniversary edition is a perfect example of what great brewers can do. I wish that this is not a one-timer! Amazing...
Thanks Evan/Jen.

22oz bottle into a couple of russian river goblets
Pours a delightful honey golden color with a bubbly eggshell white head.
Heavy pine and citrus smell that awakens your nose. Blends into a sweet honey and lemon
Goes in with a lot of might. Heavy earthy taste slowly turbs into a wonderfully hoppy bitterness. Finishes with just a tinge of sweetness
Not too overbearing. Definitely a treat to be savored

Light, clear orange with blonde highlights when backlit and a creamy ivory cap that leaves sheets of sticky lace on the glass. The aroma is amazing, caramel slathered toast, pine sap and grapefruit zest all harmoniously working together to enhance the flavors of the hops and malt. Sticky pine tar, slight alcoholic heat and candied grapefruit peel with sticky caramel and a resinous, salty hop bitterness in the finish. Hop oily mouthfeel with mild carbonation. A big tasty hop bomb. Buy this beer, it is fantastic.

Enjoyed a bomber of this at The Neighborhood in San Diego a week ago. Review from notes.
Pours a glowing amber red with a persistent eggshell head. Scads of lace drape the glass. The aroma is strongly grapefruity with lots of tropical fruit and pine notes as well. Malts are pretty much AWOL in the nose. The taste follows suit with a massive wall of mouthcoating pine tar hops. Tropical fruit notes and white grapefruit skin show as well, as does some aspiriny bitterness. The malt profile is restrained, but adds a lot of complexity. Its doughy and bready. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with light carbonation and plenty of pucker from all the bitterness. The finish lasts forever and is very bitter. Alcohol heat is fleeting, impressively well hidden.
This beer doesn't dissapoint, even though its not the freshest of the fresh at this point. Massive hops, balanced with just enough malts. Hopheads need to try this.

Serve by me...at home...out of a Bomber in a Dogfish Head IPA glass. Got this bottle back in early July 2012....aged it in near cellar conditions. ( cool corner of my closet)
Appearance: Pours a mid to dark amber color with a white, thick frothy head. Nice lacing.
Aroma: strong aged malt characteristics. Strong citrus and gentle pine nose. Some booziness. Still a decent hop nose after almost 8 months.
Taste: aged malt for sure. Very light caramel and I suspect some biscuit malt maybe...would explain the fantastic head. This is what I want a strong Imperial IPA..hell even a hoppy barleywine to taste.
Mouthfeel: the slightest of a chew...like a Barleywine almost...very noticeable booze bite and still a decent hop finish...they must of used a lot of citras.(IMO) Balance comes to mind.
Overall: a great beer. I'm surprised it aged this well in less than 8 months...I'd expect these characteristics from a year+ old Hog Heaven or Hopsickle...reminds me of the two year old 120 I had last year.(less boozy of course)

First Review on BA:
Appearance: A beautiful orange to straw colored body, looks like someone poured orange juice into a lager beer, with about a finger of white tight bubble head that dissipated very quickly expected though with the massive 10.8% ABV.
Smell: Citrus galore, grapefruit skins with oranges, deeper into a piney and floral hops, a hint of malty bready characteristic almost like sweet biscuit characteristic pleasantly surprised to smell that through the hop bomb.
Taste/mouthfeel: Good god this is a hop bomb, very bitter front of the tongue that moves into a salivating citrus and sweet hop middle, all pushed along by an epic malt backbone that fully compliments and finishes palate off perfectly. Long linger of the piney bitter hops which, I look for in a solid Iipa. Throughout the whole mouth there is no alcohol taste, a slight warming finish in the chest and stomach but a good warming.
Overall: An automatic A+ and a palate wrecker for sure. This is another epic beer by Stone. IMO this is what a strong Iipa should be. One of the best Iipa I have ever had. This is a must try for Hop heads and Stone lovers. Drink this as fresh as possible because the malts will come through. Hopefully Stone bottles this permanently now and just calls it Double Ruination because this is an out of the park beer.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into an imperial pint.
This beer pours a hazy orange color with a finger of head. The aroma is huge on citrus hops and grapefruit peel, with some piney aspects noticeable as well. It's a hop bomb, in both aroma in flavor. The taste is nearing a hop singularity in my mouth. The amount of hops in here is honestly bordering on ridiculous. A sip of this bring on a barrage of hops. Citrus, grapefruit, pine, tropical fruits, everything you know and want from a DIPA is here, and here in spades. It also does this without a hint of the overwhelming sweetness that these big DIPAs can wind up having. It's just pure hop goodness. Partway through the second glass my mouth began to acclimate to the hop assault and began to notice a nice, subtle caramel malt flavor that, again, isn't too sweet. The mouthfeel is big and EXTREMELY drying, due to the massive amounts of hops shoved into this beer. The drinkability is exceptional.
Overall, this is a great double IPA, and another hoppy winner from Stone. I'd love to see this and the 15th Anniversary constant staples in Stone's lineup.

Orange with an off-white head that sticks around for a bit. Smells of pine and citrus. Enticing. Tastes very much of citrus and pine. Very powerful. Nice bitter hop flavor. Medium full mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Great IPA! Among the likes of Pliny and Hopslam. One of my favorites.

Poured into a Black Raven pint glass. Pours a medium orange amber. Half finger off-white head dissipates slowly to a film and ring around the glass with light lacing. Great aroma of pine and citrus hops, herbal. Promises great things. Flavor of intense pine and citrus hops over a sweet malt body. The malt is nonassertive but perfectly supports the powerful herbal hops. Appropriately piney hop bitter finish with residual caramel malt. Medium bodied with a hint of creaminess. Delicious. A truly dangerous IPA, I wanted to keep drinking this continuously, and had to pace myself because of the massive ABV. A masterpiece from the masters.

Hop explosion is a description I'll reuse here as it works! Pours a beautiful deep golden color that is mostly clear - surprising at this strength... but it looks hearty! A moment after removing the cap the intense amount of hops used to brew this beer found my nose a couple feet away within seconds. Needless to say the aroma at closer inspection for fans of hops is nothing short of amazing - fruity, floral, piney. I love hoppy beers but often save them for later in the session. Not so here with this rarity to find on the east coast. I'm enjoying each and every sip. Initially fridge cold this beer tingled the back of my throat and as the beer warms a bit more alcohol is detectable. Awesome beer!!

big thanks to scott for hosting a mini-tasting and pulling this treat out. this beer has eluded me as LI got royally screwed on this one and apparently not even 10 cases made it to LI and it flew from shelves the minute it arrived. I had no issues securing any of the uber limited founders or GI beers, but this stone offering is the one that got away...and definitely lived up to the hype.
a - pours a semi transparent orange with a generous few fingers of head.
s - smells aweseom. fruit bouquet. resiny. dankness.
t - taste is phenomenal. heavy handed hops, but beautifully balanced with sweetness. sticky and dank.
m - feel is great. wonderful sweetness dancing with bitterness.
o - overall, i am very impressed. this is a hell of a beer. shame it is so hard to get locally. really wish i could have more of this, but i'll take my pour and savor every sip.
edit - managed to land a few bottles in NYC!!!

A: A deep amber tinted with a glowing orange hue having excellent clarity and a persistent off-white head.
S: A big hops nose with citrus and pineapple dominating along with grapefruit, pine and some grassy notes. There is a clean malt aroma. No alcohol noticeable behind all the hops to warn about the ABV.
T: Bitter, yet smooth hop candy dominated by pineapple, orange and grapefruit. It has a high hop flavor with a moderately-high hop bitterness. There is enough malt sweetness keep the bitterness from being to assertive though the balance is well into the bitter side. The bitterness hangs on well past the dry finish without being harsh.
M: Medium-light with a moderate carbonation and smooth alcohol warming.
O: This is definitely in my top five list for Double IPA, just an outstanding beer for a hop head. The balance and smoothness of this beer while having so much hop flavor and a respectable strong bitterness is a real treat.

A: Pours quite an exquisite golden hue with quite a miniscule white head. It may be small but it leaves a lasting impression on the glass.
S: The astounding aroma of hoppy goodness is quite amazing. It's quite a nice floral, piney essence with minimal malt sweetness coming through.
T: Personally I think the three letters "IPA" should be changed to "HOP" and this is a perfect example why. Amazing burst of hop flavor coats the palate in quite a delicate way considering the 10.8% ABV. Surprisingly, it is the sweet malt flavor that initially comes through. It is quickly, and let me emphasize QUICKLY, replaced by the stupendous hoppy flavor.
M: I was quite flabbergasted by this brew. At first the stickiness that most high ABV brews have is the first impression received. However, like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, it goes from monstrous to very well mannered. For 10.8% there is relatively no alcohol sensation, which is profoundly impressive.
O: Stone Brewing is one of my favorites, and this only helps to validate my reasoning. This brew delivers a perfect, and quite delicious, example of the DIPA style. Well done.

22 oz bottle
A- Poured brilliantly translucent copper with nice white 1 finger head.
S- Smell is big citrus and pine hops with nice subtle malt character.
T- Taste is HUGE hops with a nice malt backbone to balance it out to a degree. The hops are still the main character here. EXCELLENT!
M- Mouthfeel is nice for the style. Not a lot of heat to this for the 10.8 ABV.
O- Stone nailed this one. It is BIG, BOLD, and DELICIOUS. I can't wait to find another bottle. Picked this up in Oregon as it hasn't arrived in Washington state yet. Find it!

I was surprised to find this in stock to be honest, couldn't wait to try this one.
A: A murky and copper body, no floaties, no visible carbonation. A 1/2 inch head dissipated quickly as I returned the bottle to my chiller.
S: I notice a zesty pine smell and it's very fresh. I'll agree with previous posters in its comparison to Hoptimum.
T: Straight up awesome! It's everything I want in a DIPA. This is up top with my favorites. I wish they would make this into a permanent offering. I get the citrus, I get the strong pine, I get the incredible amounts of hops.
M: It was a bit chewy; however, let's be honest, they used 5 lbs of hops. Still incredible. Hops, hops, and more hops on the palate. It is definitely ruined.
O: Gotta be honest, Stone did an amazing job on this one, worthy of a notable anniversary. I wish I could get more.

Bomber served chilled into a pint glass.
Ruination's Tenth is a hazy golden orange with thin white head. It's tight and dense with some lace left behind as it slowly settles.
Aroma is big and hoppy just as expected and just as it should be. Huge grapefruit and citrus like nothing else I've had.
Flavor is very intense. In fact, I think only the Younger is stronger in aroma and flavor. It has some sweetness up front from the huge malt bill leading to its 10%+ ABV. But the rest of the sip is pure hoppy goodness. So strong, so bitter, and so hoppy. Rind and pith and all that is bitter in a piece of citrus fruit.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied and well carbonated. No balance really, whatsoever. It's big and bitter and that's it.
Overall a really special double IPA. Hopefully it will not just be a one-off but at least we will always have Ruination. It's the grandfather of double IPAs.

The first beer in a while that has made me forget how much I miss having Heady Topper freely available to me. Heady is like the girlfriend who did things to you that you will never forget and makes every girlfriend after her have to live up to her amazing talents.
This 10th Anniversary Ruination from Stone is a hop lovers delight and makes you say fuck you to Ms. Topper but you know damn well if HT came to visit you'd do whatever it takes to get yourself a taste. Stone is one of those company's that just makes great beer. I can't imagine what it would be like fresh on draft on the west coast.

A: A bright, hazy orange. Nice head on the initial pour and fantastic lacing. Almost sparkles.
S: Wow. Great stuff here. Piney resin is subtle with some huge tropical notes and hints of grapefruit. As it warms, the alcohol comes out and there is a bit of booziness.
T: Giant hops. Pure Stone through and through. But also I'm surprised by how drinkable it is. Goes down smooth for a DIPA. Easily top three DIPAs I've had. No question.
M: It's not syrupy but there is some heft there. And, this beer really covers your entire palate - it hits all the notes.
O: The best one-off DIPA I've had. Hands down. There are seasonal releases that top it, but in terms of a 'celebration' beer, nothing I've tasted comes close. Stone continues its traditon of continually raising the bar. Excellent.

Poured into a Stone Ruination IPA shaker on principal. Pours a deep, coppery orange with a slight haze to it. Two fingers of pure white head with copious, tiny bubbles towers over the beer with lots of bubbles rushing up from the base of the glass. Lacing is abundant. The nose is dominated by piney and citrus hops, but has a surprisingly sweet background of sweet, caramely malts. The taste, rather surprisingly comes very malt forward, and then bam, the hops hit in the back end. They are lots of citrus and pine, grapefruit. The palate is chewy, malty, full, with a long-lasting bitter finish. Overall, I was very surprised at how much of the stage the malt takes in this beer. I would actually say I like the original Ruination more, but this beer is damn fine. Damn fine indeed.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. It pours a golden orange color and forms a 1/2 inch eggshell colored head that slowly reduces leaving a nice lacing.
The aroma is solid with a primarily grapefruit and pine hop scent that has a sappy/resin hit. A hint of alcohol and not a lot of malt presence.
The taste is again that great hoppy blend of pineapple sweetness and pine rawness, combined wih just barely enough malts and bitterness at the end.
The mouthfeel is medium/full bodied with a reasonable level of carbonation. Velvety texture with a nice dry finish.
Overall, I think this is a great beer. It is a solidly hopped beer with great flavor and aroma combinations. Well worth it if you can get it.

Poured into a tulip glass from the tap at iTap-Soulard for St. Louis Craft Beer Week.
Pours a bright dark copper with some slight haze. There is a dense light creamy colored head that forms and has some sticky lacing.
Aroma is intense. Sweet and boozy with monstrous hop resin notes that are intense and delicious. Strong grapefruit and tangerine and even some sweet pineapple notes. Malts might be there with some caramel and slight grain notes.
Taste is impressive. Intense hoppy brew. Citrus notes with some grapefruit and strong orange notes, both sweet and citrusy. Sweetness is definitely prominent in the taste. But mixes well with some intense hop notes that destroy the palette. Yummy. The booze is prominent and I can definitely feel it a bit. Great resinous and sticky body with some nice dry finish.
Overall. Stone nailed it with this brew. Delicious and well crafted. Intense and devastating hops that really put your palette out for a rest but that is so delicious that you can’t help but want more.

A - Pours with one finger of off-white foam on top of a hazy, copper colored body. The head settles fairly quickly but leaves nice lace.
S - A really strong, green hop aroma of pine and sweaty hops with some bready malt in the background. Smells like a handful of hop pellets.
T - Sweet malt and huge loads of pungent, pine hops up front. More pine and sweaty hop in the middle with toffee and bread malt character. Finishes with overwhelming hop flavors of pine, orange, and pepper.
M - Medium-thick body, moderate carbonation, and a sweet finish.
D - Wow. This is the hoppiest beer I have ever had. More than Pliny, more than hopslam, just ridiculously over the top. I could smell the hops as soon as the cap came off the bottle and it only got stronger from there. It smell more like hops than a handful of actual hops does. It also comes across as slightly more drinkable than regular Ruination since the extra malt and alcohol helps balance the saturation level of bitterness. Absolutely worth trying and while I know this won't ever become a year round offering I would certainly buy it again if they ever make another batch.

Reviewed from notes from 7/29/12. Wish I had taken better notes! haha!
A- Finger and a half head over a beautiful deep gold/amber pour.
S- Nose is overwhelmed by citrusy hops, especially grapefruit aroma. This will be a hop-bomb!
T- While all the hops that were in the aroma are there in the taste, this is actually extremely well balanced with a heavy dose of caramel malts.
M- Nearly perfect for the style.
O- An outstanding Imperial IPA!
