Notes:
And as Stone Ruination IPA turns 10, we thought we’d make ourselves a nice little birthday present to celebrate. But what kind of selfish jerks would we be if we didn’t share?! Behold, the Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA. (Clever name, eh? That’s why us folks in the Marketing Dept. get the big bucks!) It’s an amped-up version of Stone Ruination IPA, with a bit more malt to bring the abv up from 7.7% to 10.8%, and a very heavy dose of hops. “Classic” Ruination uses 2.5 pounds of hops per barrel–which is more than double the amount we use in any other of our core beers–but for Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA, we went double again, using an impressive 5 pounds of hops per barrel, including about a pound each of Citra and Centennial in the dry hop. (Hell. Yes.)

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a snifter, best by 8-23-22. This pours a nice amber color with a small short lived off white head. The smells are of pine, citrus, grapefruit and a little caramel. The feel is medium to thick. The taste is of hops lots of then, pretty good but a lot of sweetness, more balanced than expected.

Released earlier today.

A: Dark copper with a white head. Retention is good with some lacing.

S: A small bit of malt sweetness peeks out behind the spicy pinecone, and pineapple hops. Grapefruit and tangerines. Light on the flowery hops and peach.

T: Tangerines, peaches, pine needles, and a tiny bit of alcohol. Pine, some bitter/sweet grain, and grapefruit in the aftertaste. Big and in your face.

M:Full bodied and coats the mouth, yet quickly dries. Medium-full carbonation.

O: Nice big hopbomb.

Straight pour from a 22oz pry-off bottle to my DFH IPA glass; freshness date of August 26, 2013 printed in yellow ink on the shoulder of the bottle (“DRINK BY 08/26/13”).

Appearance (3.75): Three fingers of light tan foam makes up the head, cappong a toasted golden body that’s almost crystal-clear with just a slight chill haze. Great retention here, with the head taking forever to die down; lacing is moderate at best, though, with some suds here and there on all sides of the glass.

Smell (4.25): Oodles of tropical, brash, citrus hops mixing in with a caramelized sugar cookie-ish malt sweetness (I dunno, like shortbread with caramelized sugar on top?) leads the way. Pineapple and mango juice blur the line with the bready-sweet malt character, with undertones of resinous, dank, weedy hops. Surprisingly good balance between malt and hops.

Taste (4.25): Lots of hops, lots of malt, but more or less balanced. Lots of piney, citrus zest bitterness comes through throughout the beer, from start to finish. There’s definitely a solid malt backbone in this beer (more of that caramelized sugar, some rich short bread, and a rather nutty, toasted characer), but its edges blend into the hops character: the malt sweetness blurs the line with the juicy citrus fruit (pineapple juice, mango nectar), and the nutty toasted note blends into the dank resin from the hops. There’s a relatively strong citrus bitterness (a mix of red grapefruit juice and lemon zest) that is almost hidden by that thick malt character, until the finish—where a wave of that bitterness washes out the malt sweetness and lingers for a while. There’s some booze heat, but it blends in with the resin, toast, and citrus peel, as it should in a big DIPA. This is big and brash, but (relatively) balanced.

Mouthfeel (4.5): Somewhat syrupy in feel, with a fuller-than-medium-weight feel and a smooth, almost velvety carbonation that foams softly and easily on the way down. There’s some boozy heat that sneaks in there, too, and with the hop oils it helps dry up the finish substantially. Feels great, actually for such a big-ass DIPA.

Overall (4.25): As noted in the smell, taste, and feel, this is a big, bold DIPA, with a surprising amount of balance. It’s not the hoppiest or the most memorable DIPA I’ve had, but all of the most prominent components—hops, malt, and booze—blend in to each other well, which is the mark (to me, anyway) of a well-crafted DIPA. For me, I think I actually prefer the regular Ruination, because it’s a lean, mean, hop-blasting machine, while this is a big, thick DIPA with its own character. But this is plenty good in its own right, too, and worth seeking out if you like DIPAs brash, thick, and balanced.

A: Great clarity, fluffy white head, poured a nice amber color.

S: Lots of hops; oranges, piney -- amazing aroma.

T: The hops are heavy, but they get balanced out very well. Pine, grapefruit, lemon and spices; nice dry finish. For a 10.8% ABV, the alcohol is barely noticeable.

M: Great carbonation, medium-body, nice dry and bitter aftertaste.

O: Great beer. First beer from Stone I've had, and it makes me excited to try some of the other varieties I picked up.
