A: poured pretty much a dark as night black in color with a thin brown head and left very little lacing sticking to the glass.

S: you can definitely tell that the hops were there on the first whiff with a good amount of roastiness from the chocolate malts but it did have a little coffee aroma to it as well.

T: black hoppy heaven on the first sip alongside chocolate roasty malt flavor, coffee accents, hints of smoke and a touch of brown sugar and molasses.

M: the brew was medium in body with a low amount of carbonation which had a hoppy, roasty, mild sweet, and slight smokey finish.

D: it was a really good cascadian brew but because of the hop punch it wasn't the easiest to take down but a solid black beer.

found a bottle at a local fish market that also sells beer and wine . been conditioning on the shelf for two years just my luck. smells of toffee , coffee, chocolate , and a hint of annise. the mouth feel was smooth and silky, almost tasted more like a russian imperial stout that a imperial black ipa .

Reviewed Dec 2011

Poured from bottle into a pint glass.

Pours like a stout, with a nice tan head about a finger thick. Good lacing.

It’s got some coffee and licorice, but the pine and hops smell as well. Maybe a bit of caramel. An interesting mix.

Taste really confused me. It’s a light body, very smokey, almost ashy. Greets you with light coffee and finishes with a hop kick near the end. I couldn’t tell it was over 10%. Very powerful. Leaves a nice aftertaste.

Overall, it’s a very interesting beer to say the least. Very complex and very bold. Impressive.
