Notes:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.
This ninth edition of our Stone Vertical Epic Ale series takes two interesting left turns. A Belgian-style golden triple is the starting point of this beer, but the first left turn is nearly immediate with the addition of dried chamomile flowers, triticale, and Belgian amber candi sugar. The second, and rather unusual left turn takes us half an hour up the road from Stone to Temecula courtesy of the addition of just-pressed Muscat, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc grapes from our friends at South Coast Winery. As the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series has moved through the calendar, we found that the brewing schedule for a 10.10.10 release coincided nicely with the grape harvest, neatly providing an interesting twist in this epic ale.

On tap at Flying Saucer in Cordova TN, on 11.12.11
Poured a beautiful gold color, fizzy, barely any head, didn't last long. Hard to judge on the head since I didn't pour it myself and have no idea how the taps are set. Every single beer other then the nitro beers I saw being tapped last night had no head.
Smells great, crispy belgian yeast smell, small hint of lemon.
Tastes like a dry triple, that's the easiest way to explain it, the added wine grapes come through real subtle, very intersting. I'm glad we have a bottle of this left to age some more. Really wish this wasn't a special release!

VE 10.10.10!!!
Pours out a slightly hazy, golden-orange, decent carbonation and 2 fingers of a white head.
The aroma has huge notes of white grape, some lemon zest, fruity esters, some orange peel, a bit of an herbal quality with some slight banana and clove in the mix. Smells a bit like wine.
The taste is also packed with a ton of white grape and grape skin right away. There are some floral and herbal notes as well, followed by some banana, but very light on the clove. There is some of that lemon zest and a hint of orange peel too. The Belgian yeast notes are kinda light in this. There is some decent bitterness on the backend.
The body is light-medium and there is a nice creamy mouthfeel. The ABV is so hidden I couldn't tell this was 9.5%. No taste, smell or feel of alcohol. Very easy to drink.
This is a really nice take on the Belgian-style Pale Ale. I never had it fresh, so I don't know if it improved with age, but it's drinking very good right now.

Served on-tap at Rattle N Hum in New York, NY
A: Pours a lightly hazy deep golden yellow to copper in color with some moderate orange + lemon yellow highlights, moderate amounts of visible carbonation, and just a touch of visible yeast sediment in the bottom of the glass. The beer has a two finger tall dense foamy white head that slowly reduces to a thick film covering the entire surface of the beer and a thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.
S: Light to moderate aromas of lemon citrus along with light aromas of spicy yeast, some spices, and just a hint of tartness.
T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of pale malts with distinctive Belgian yeast and spices (clove and black pepper). There is a moderate amount of tartness with some light vinous notes almost like it had been aged in white wine barrels.
M: Heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Significant amounts of dryness.
O: Having tried this when it first came out, I think it improved quite a bit with age and was pretty excited to find it on tap (since I was not writing reviews when it came out initially). I found it easy to drink and thought that the tartness really improved this one.

Pours a golden to coppery color into the glass giving 1 finger of quickly receding white head. Carbonation bubbles rising from the center of the glass. Minimal lacing.
Lenony Belgian aromas and just a whiff that was lightly metallic. A bit spicy, faint chamomile.
Lemony again. Reminiscent of a semi-dry white wine. Spicy Belgian yeast and alcohol. Some faint bitterness in the end. One swig seemed to have a bit of horsey character.
Medium-light. Very drying on the tongue. Some alcohol burn in the throat.
I liked this. The lemony characteristics might make for a good atypical summer sampling. A bit thicker than most summer brews, though. One to take a bit of time with.
4/1/2013
Appearance is the same, except this time I get a 3 1/2 finger head
No metallics this time, but add doughy bread, almost reminiscent of canned sweet corn at times.
Taste seems even more vinuous this time with a decidedly tart aspect.
Seems less drying than before, I certainly wouldn't say "very drying". There's still plenty of bite from the carbonation as well.
I'm knocking the taste up to a 4.25 from a 4.0, and the mouthfeel to a 3.75 from a 3.5 . In my opinion, this beer, like the '09, has improved.
