The same night that Blind Tiger rocked an aged keg of Vertical Epic '06, they also had a special on this bad boy, so I grabbed one...

Poured blacker than black into a snifter, with two fingers of tan head, and superb lacing. The aroma consisted of an eclectic but amazing mix of prune, fig, pineapple, caramel, and vanilla cream. The flavor yielded all of the above, with more of a lean towards the caramel and vanilla, but also with some smokiness and toasted coconut. The texture is creamy throughout, with a smooth/sweet finish. Very little, if any, hint of alcohol presence. I have NEVER tasted anything like this; truly a unique brew. If they still have this on the 'specials' chalkboard at The Tiger, you should DEFINITELY try one. I am currently scouring stores for some home supply.

Review from 12/2009 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a dark near black amber. Moderate head and light lacing. Hoppy aroma. Hops / IPA start with a light malt, black ale backbone. Hops, malt, fruit, alcohol middle and hoppy finish. Like a dark hoppy American barley wine. Not that well integrated. Interesting but not exceptional. Addendum: tried again in 2010, it did not improve with age. Still drinkable, but no mellowing or integration; hops astringent.

A - Pours a dark brown-black color with a finger of frothy khaki colored head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of roasted chocolate and dark malts with some earthy and citrus hops, some licorice, and a bit of coffee, dark fruits, and booze.

T - Starts off with some roasted chocolate malts with some orange and citrus hops with a bit of black licorice and coffee. Through the middle, some earthy hops and bitterness comes through with some dark fruit sweetness, nuttiness, and some dark caramel malts. The finish is a mix of roasted chocolate and coffee with some dark fruit and a bit of booze.

M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth and slightly thick with a sweet and warming finish.

D - Very drinkable. Nice mix of dark roasted malt character and lager smoothness. Good overall balance and body.

More thanks to Bobby (alembician) for a beer I might never had a chance to try at all.

This beer is close to black, a very dark brown with ruby-brown hues in the light. A light brown head shows some a little growth and some stick, as it retains itself well and manages pretty good lacing.
This is a unique beer that I wouldn't think could be pegged as any kind of pils going into it. There is some grassiness to otherwise citric, grapefruity and herbal hops along with a lot of roast and some char. I suppose I could see this tagged as a Black Pilsener in the same way there's such a thing as a Cascadian Black, in that the hoppiness stops short of that particular style, it has the same kind of mixture and balance of hops and malts, and it's a bit earthier and grassier. The malty sweetness just adds an extra element. Alcohol is exceptionally well masked.
The body is medium, not the typical lightness of a pils but with the crispness, with a prickly carbonation. It foregoes smoothness for the crispness.

This is one of a number of collaborative beers I've recently had. All of them feature Stone as well as two other brewers. I think this is one of my favorites. Very drinkable, especially for the alcohol by volume.

Appearance is a dark black. Very dark carbonation, which was quite active and left some lacing behind.

Smell was of dark roast and dark fruits. Some hops comes through. In general, a very strong aroma.

Flavor was excellent. Very well balanced. All the elements were there and it was very drinkable given the abv.

Overall an excellent beer.
