12 oz. bottle (glad this one is in 4 packs now) into my Bell's pint.

Appearance is black. Black coffe black. Some light barely squeezes through.

Smell is floral and burnt.

Taste is jarring. Smacked with hops. Finishes with a coating bitterness and awesome roastiness.

Mouthfeel is sticky and resinous.

Overall just a great beer. One of my favorites. Stone really nailed a 'style' that can be hit or miss.

22 oz bottle bought for $5.79. Best by 11/10, so this should be pretty fresh.

A: Very black, dramatically so. Disappointingly small head that's gone almost immediately. Like many IPAs, doesn't appear very carbonated.

S: Full, fantastic pine and citrus hop aroma. Despite its appearance, I don't get a trace of roasty smells, just hop glory.

T: Wonderful. Pine and soft tangerines. Significantly bitter. Very long taste.

M: Heavier than Stone IPA, but not the heaviness of, say, a porter. A bit of a prickle also.

O: This is unlike any other beer and is remarkably affordable given its quality. In a lineup that ranges from good (porter, pale) to incredible (IPA, IRS), Sublimely Self Righteous is maybe Stone's apotheosis.

It’s 7:30 – time for Jeopardy and a sophisticated drink to go with it.

I poured this bomber into a Sierra Nevada balloon glass. It’s extremely dark brown in color, almost black. There was about a half inch of slowly dissipating head. Eventually things settle down and we’re left with a bubbly film across the top.

This has a distinct pine scent, with a hint of caramel. Very nice. The flavor is piney as well, with a touch of caramel malt. Also a slight “roasty stoutiness” to it, which I like. There’s a moderate hoppy finish. Not too bitter though. Heavy lacing throughout - the sign of a quality brew.

Not sure why this is classified as an American Black Ale, it’s more like a Double Black IPA to me. And a good one at that.

Served from the bottle into a a globe shaped glass. Best by 12/28/12.

A- Very very dark brown with some red hues shining through, big frothy mocha colored head with big bubbles on top that left lots of cascading lace

S- Huge, huge piney hops, roasted malt, some citrus. Not very complex but very strong and I love it

T- Big piney hops, tons of bitterness, pretty big woodiness, lots of roasted and burnt malt

M- Very dry, creamy and smooth mouthfeel, moderate carbonation

O- This is seriously one bitter and dry beer, which is not surprising from Stone. This is like a black IPA version of Ruination. While the flavor profile has some differences from 15th Anniversary Black IPA, both are among the driest and most bitter beers I have had.

Growler taken directly from the store where this was poured into a Unibroue snifter shortly after arrival.

Pours basically black with subtle signs of deep orange-red coloration around the edges. The tan head is moderate in size but long-lasting and leaves gobs of sticky lacing on the glass.

Plenty of hops in the aroma, as expected from Stone, with obvious pine and citrus aspects as well as some vague herbal notes. Enticing. A strong piney hop flavor dominates up front. Usually this would be followed by q quite bitter taste, or at least a very bitter aftertaste. Although there's an obvious bitterness and an IBU = 90, this beer starts bitter-sweet and keeps the bitterness under control all the way through. There's a solid dark malt component helping out with this, but clearly Stone extracted plenty of hop aroma and flavor without boiling all the bitterness out of the Chinook, Simcoe & Amarillo hops. The high ABV makes itself known in the aroma, after some warming, but remains fairly well hidden in the taste. Complex and rich, extraordinary balance and interesting, and wonderful flavor dynamics.

M: full bodied; about as creamy smooth as can be at ABV = 8.7%; excellent, medium carbonation.

O: an amazing beer and the cream of the crop in Black IPAs in my experience. In any case, a world class beer all hop heads should seek out.

Drank from a 1 pt. 6 fl. oz. bottle purchased at Julio's Liquors, Westboro, MA
Enjoy by 10/27/12
Drank from a pint glass

The beer poured a dark chestnut brown and was topped by a two-plus finger tall crown of tight, bubbly, cocoa colored foam. Excellent retention. The head slowly faded to a thick cap. Spotty blocks of lacing stuck along the glass.

The aroma was remarkably hoppy. Candied orange peel was most noticeable. Somewhat grassy. There was a generic, sweet fruitiness that was well matched by a dry, powdery yeastiness. The malts were practically nonexistent. If I tried hard, I could pick up a touch of roastiness, but perhaps that was just my imagination.

Like the nose, the flavor profile was dominated by hops. In this case, however, the hops were much more bitter and punchy. A touch of roasted malts and cold coffee appeared on the front end before the hops took over. The hops had an orange peel-like flavor initially. As the beer moved along my palate, the hops intensified, turning super dry, pithy and grapefruit-like. The beer finished bone dry, super bitter and resiny with strong notes of pine needles. While the flavor profile may not have been my cup of tea, I was amazed by how well this beer buried its alcohol prowess.

The mouthfeel was a bit thinner than anticipated with a very fine and mild effervescence. The liquid felt surprisingly watery for the style.

Had I not been able to look at this beer, I would have sworn that it was an IPA. Neither my nose nor my palate could pick up any more than an inkling of roastiness or malty sweetness. Personally, I would prefer a bit more balance, but what can you expect from Stone?

Had many times before, first review of it
Bomber to snifter, best by 10/27 date

Beautiful bottle work with a signature long narrative on the back.
Pours pitch black with a finger of a light brown head. Excellent lacing, great retention

Aroma of coffee, hops, and chocolate. carmal malts shine through with a hint of aocohol

Taste is very bitter, strong hops, coffee, toffee, and the caramel malt all blend together well. Hints of vanilla come through on the after taste. Very good

The feel is probably my favorite part of this beer. Very creamy and smooth, goes down quite easy. Little carbonation to get in the way of the taste

Over all this is the beer getting me interested in black ipas. One of my favorites, will continue to be one of my regular pick ups

Poured into the Dogfish Head/Sierra Nevada IPA Glass

Appearance: Pours a super dark brown, almost black until the light hits it and some nice ruby highlights appear on the outside edges. The beer has a gorgeous, 2 to 3 finger khaki head that has amazing head retention and plenty of lacing.

Aroma: Huge, dank hops right upfront; grapefruit, pine needs, peach and even some hints of lemon zest. There are some notes of chocolate, vanilla and slightly roasty malts that lay just under the mountain of hops in the nose.

Taste: A pungent explosion of grapefruit and pine as soon as the beer touches your tongue. The oily, resinous hops sustain until about the middle of the taste and the rich, lush and very chocolate forward malts kick in and mellow out some of the harsh, very bitter hops in the off dry finish. Long, lingering notes of baker's chocolate and bitter citrus are left on your palate. The is a light alcohol presence that becomes more apparent as the beer warms, but it intermingles well with the bitter hoppy finish.

Mouthfeel: Very rich and has a full, somewhat creamy body. Moderate to high carbonation, which is very appropriate for the style.

Overall: The quintessential black IPA. I remember first trying this black IPA several years ago and being absolutely blown away, because not only did it possess the bright, hop forward and citrus-y flavor profile of an imperial IPA, but it also had the appearance and chocolate-y and slightly roasty malt characteristics of a great and smooth porter. Nowadays, it seems like more and more Black IPAs forget to include the chocolate roastiness of Porters in their taste. Sublimely Self-Righteous certainly doesn't succumb to this pitfall and definitely earns it's namesake year after year.

Pretty clear dark dark brown beer with a half inch of mocha head. Wow super hoppy nose. Citrus grapefruit and pine. Some sweet caramel malt comes through as the beer airs out.

This is one of the most deceptively colored beers. Really tastes like a standard double IPA than a black IPA. Deep roasted malt comes through a touch in the beginning of the sip but huge resinous hop presence comes through almost instantly. Despite the massive amount of hops and big bitterness pretty good balance, a bit of detectable alcohol. Touch of malt but this beer is a big hop show case. If you love double IPA's you'll love it because big pretty good tasting and pretty standard. However for such a dark beer the malt really doesnt play as much of a role as you expect it. Good but I was expecting much more, especially at the price.

Bomber poured into duvel tulip

A: Pours a nice brown, nearly black in the glass. Nice tan head with decent lacing, this is one of the best things I love about Black IPAs.

S: Roasted malt, citrus and pine

T: Much like the nose, deep malt toastiness with orange citrus that shines, great flavor combination

M: Great body, bitterness not too high, nice creaminess, another thing I love about the black IPA style, and stone doesn't disappoint

Great beer, one of my favorite Black IPAs, definitely the benchmark for the style.

S - Roasted flavors and subtle hop aroma.

F - Nice roasted flavors with a nice hop after taste.

M - Very nice. Smooth as silk.

O - This is a very tasty black IPA and one of my favorite's for the style now.

UPDATE: 9/4/12 - I have drank this beer a few more times since this review; once on tap and a couple bottles. I really like this beer a lot more than my original review and it is probably one of my favorite black IPA's now. I have updated my scores and review accordingly.

A-dark brown with a thick tan head

S-smells much like an IPA. Weedy hops, pretty good. Strong scent.

T-comes in with a very bitter taste of citrusy hops and just a touch of roasted grains. Almost exclusively an ipa. Not much darkness in the taste at all.

M-medium creamy carbonation with a watery finish

O-This really is an ipa with a dark color. It's possible that due to that, this is one of my favorite black ales out there. It's drinkable and tasty and not at a terrible price.

A- Pours black with a 3+ finger light mocha colored head. Slight deep red hues on the edges. Slight head persists.

S- I could smell it the moment it was opened. On closer inspection the intense spicy hops are first immediately followed by strong malts. No alcohol in the nose.

T- First flavor is sweet as it roll over the tongue. The fruit & flower of the hops fight the coffee roast for second. Alcohol pops in for third flavor. Then the hop bitter show up forth. The coffee comes back fifth surrounded by sweet, bitter, & alcohol persisting for a very long time. The roast & bitter accumulate as one drinks.

M- Smooth in the mouth. Fine textured with light but prevalent carbonation.

O- Wow! That's enjoyable. Great range of big flavors as equally balanced as 3 UFC fighters playing King of the Hill. This is good for any occasion.

This ale is black, and it quickly eats up any attempt color throws at it, only in the outer edges of its deathly grasp can you faintly detect a simple shade of red escaping. This beats is trapped by a thick billowy cloud of bubbles, tan in color and very tempting, like the sirens of old as described to me by Homer…and they bring friends, many friends to lure you into their depth (good lacing). If you’ve been to hell and back, then you certainly recognize the odor of sulfur (hops, hops and more hops all mixed in with some dark fruit and citrus aromas here and there). If you’ve ever eaten Eskimo P***y then this beast will fair no different, among the best tastes in the world. Simply delightful for a hophead; relatively light bodied for this brewer, but the hops are present and do not disappoint. The roasted barley is fresh and its bite is mild and only gives you a hint of the alcohol it contains. The citrus flavors you feel when it first hits you are quickly transformed into a lasting and lingering burnt hops aftertaste. This is a very good ale!

On tap at Blind Tiger.

Beer is black with a moderate tan head. Great retention and good lacing.

Roasted malt in the nose. Some citrus (grapefruit).

Roasted malt, chocolate and grapefruit in the taste. Some orange. Bitter. A nice mix of the two elements of the Black IPA. Pretty juicy.

Full bodied, moderately carbonated. Oily.

Overall, quite a good beer.

22oz bomber poured into a snifter.

A- Pours black with a finger's worth of head that sticks around for awhile. The head slowly dissipates into a sticky film along the sides of the glass.

S- Smells great, tons of citrusy hops dominate the aroma. I get some slight hints of an almost toffee/chocolate like smell also, but very subtle.

T- Starts off with some citrus and pine hop notes, gives way to dark fruits and toffee-like malts. Good stuff, very different.

M- Medium to heavy, carbonated well, bitter yet malty.

Sublimely is yet another stellar showing from Stone. It's the best of both worlds with malty and hoppy characters.

Pours an opaque, very dark brown with a foamy, persistent, root beer head. Aroma is conspicuously absent, given the gorgeous presentation. Some raw grain, some citrus hop notes. Nice, evenly balanced mouthfeel between the fullness and the carbonation. Flavors are comprised of spooned mashing grain, lemon, pine, and grass. Some dark roasted barley. Finishes with some faint pine and unfermented sugar. Big beer, but not because of any one big flavor. This is my favorite Stone brew. That's not saying a lot because I think most are deplorable. But, I do like this one a lot.

Poured from a 22oz bomber into a pint glass

Appearance: Centimeter head formed very fast and retained throughout drinking. Left awesome lacing on glass. Pours very dark with a nice creamy head. Looks great.

Smell: Alot of toffee and malt with some lemony hops. Wanted more in terms of smell

Taste: Here is where it gets really good. Citrus front end--hoppy, even some grassy resin. Lemony and some spicy orange peel. The malts kick in mid taste--and they taste great. Toffee, even roasted mild chocolate. It finishes pretty clean too with a citrus spice, and I am left with a citrusy/coffee after taste. Very complex.

Mouthfeel: Smooth for a medium bodied. Carbonation is on point.

Stone has a reason to be proud of this one. I can't understate how complex this beer tastes--so much so that I feel that I'm missing something and underrating it. Will definitely revisit--would love to try this on tap. Highly recommend

Appearance is dark almost stout like with a 2 cm head that fades rather quickly. Beautiful. 4.5

Smell is that of a double IPA on Guinness steroids. Excellent 4.0

Taste is magnificent! Think a ruination with a small batch of old Rasputin and that's exactly what this great ale Sums up to. Nice and bitter with just the right amount if hops to dark roasted barley. Grapefruit then coffee beautifulness! 5.0

Mouthfeel is nice and carbonated yet very smooth, dare I say velvet? Groovy. 4.5

Overall my vote would be to rate this up there with the best of them. Pallet differences aside for anyone who likes porter/stouts and a great IPA this is for you. Hands down the best "black IPAS" I've ever had. Thank you Stone brewery!

Glass: New Belgium globe glass

Stone's Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale is a solid BIPA, but strikes me as a bit too ethanol-heavy for its own good. While it delivers a nice, medium to medium-heavy body with strong hop and moderate roasted malt flavors, this just does not live up to its potential, the ethanol being too high and not appropriately balanced by the other flavors and aromas in the beer. If this were around 7%, I suspect it would be much more appealing to my palate. As it stands, it's a good beer, but not one I really feel that I'll go back to.

Pours a >2cm head of tan bubbles, small on the lower layers while large to medium on the upper. Head retention is above average, and the descending foam leaves thick lacing along the sides of the glass. The beer's body is opaque, dark brown to black, with no visible carbonation.

Aroma features prominent pine resin, pine bark, and grapefruit hops with a base of roasted malt with notes of char and roasted nuts. Ethanol creeps out a bit as this warms, and so it is more enjoyable when cold.

Taste, overall, presents a steadfast grapefruit and orange citrus bitterness combined with a roasted malt presence, lending chocolate and charred grain to the flavor spectrum. The hops still win out, but the dark malt factor is always present.
Taste opens with dark and roasted malt sweetness, with a fair bit of citrus fruit that's also sweet and flavorful. Mid-palate brings out the grapefruit bitterness and char/chocolate, which lasts through the back of the palate and into the aftertaste. Aftertaste is primarily of a potent bitterness with a noticeable char and roasted malt component. I agree with ThisWangsChung that the beer becomes a bit harsh with its ethanol exposure as it warms up: it's best enjoyed at or below cellar temperature.

Beer's body is medium to medium-heavy in weight, with fairly light to medium-light levels of carbonation. The result is a fairly smooth beer with a hefty body, resulting in a full and satisfying mouthfeel. Closes out expectedly dry, with long-lingering bitterness and a touch of residual sweetness around the lips.

S- Malt that is dark, hops that are citrus

T- What? Did not expect that. Like a black IIPA, very unique, I like it. It tastes like an IPA but looks like a Stout/Porter. Very complex malts then the hops hit your throat like a Bruce Lee 1 inch punch.

M- Full and just the right amount of carbonation

'Bout time I review this, I've been glossing it over for a few months now, and I hope this is as killer as the 15th anniversary ale Stone did. 22 oz. bottle poured into a tumbler pint glass.

A: Pours a very dark brown color with faint hints of light coming through the body. The head is a two finger light mocha color with a great creamy texture and excellent retention. Nice rings of lacing are left on the glass.

S: Grapefruity. I'm a little disappointed I'm not getting more roast/coffee/chocolate - in fact, it smells mostly like a generic IPA, not just from the citrus rind/pine/herbal hop tones, but honestly a bit from the malt backbone, as well. It smells more bright than roasted, although there's a faint hint of chocolate to remind me it's still a black IPA. Don't get me wrong, I really like how it smells, but I want a little more 'black' and a little less 'IPA'. Then again, I thought the exact same about Storm King, and I absolutely loved that one...

T: This is really drinking like a normal IPA to me, sadly...initial flavors are strong in grapefruit and orange rind, before giving way to a medium finishing bitterness. However, the hop profile is very well executed. Chocolate malt starts to make its appearance after several sips, helping smooth out the hops and providing a burnt, ashy (even vegetal, at times) edge to the finish. Still, it doesn't mesh together in the way Stone's 15th does, and it becomes slightly too boozy as it warms up - drink this one cold, in other words.

M: Rather thin, with a dryness coming more from the hops rather than the roast. There's a bit of malt stickiness throughout. Alcohol can be felt slightly on the tongue and stomach once it warms up, and it just feels weird all around. Drinkability is disappointingly low.

O: I'm really disappointed it's only 'okay' instead of 'mindblowing' like its (sorely missed) big brother. I'm thinking maybe oldish bottle, but the Stone 15th I had was 6 months old, and it still blew me away. To be fair, that was clearly more malt driven - so I'll try this again fresh, or maybe on tap.

Can't seem to find a date on this one. Poured into a pint. Enjoying this one due to a good friend reminding me of it (I was quite the beer novice when I had it the first time)!

A - A dark brown that looks similar to a light stout. Tan head with small bubbles. Good retention.

S - Piney hops up front with some sweet chocolate malts rounding it out.

T - Starts with the piney hops but quickly begin dissipation as a smooth chocolate malts takes over. A surprisingly smooth transition that ends with a bit of warmth from the ABV, which is hidden masterfully otherwise.

M - A light-medium body that has a consistency near water, which I believe could be a tad better, perhaps more viscous. Carbonation is mild and again I believe a slight improvement would benefit the beer. This said, it is an incredibly drinkable black ale at this ABV.

O - A good showing from Stone. I would not have any issues with enjoying one another day.
