A: Rich burnt umber color, topped with a fluffy light tan head with tight bubbles. The head lasts a long time, leaving quality lace along the sides.

S: Pine, citrus & fruit hit the nose...and bring with it tropical essences of pineapple, white peach and mango.

T: Honey and sugar cookie are noticible first on the tip of the tongue, then comes honey dew melon, citrus, pine and bitters at the back of the throat. Nice caramel malts add a good stabalizing backbone. Finishes smoothly with pleasant alcohol vapors like the original, giving a sense of a perfectly complex palate of flavors.

M: Juicy and robust with good body and well-paired carbonation.

D: I love the 10th and wondered what the double dry hopped version would be like. Although still delicious, I felt it muddied the original flavors a bit. Sometimes more isn't better, but sometimes more is simply different. Regardless, I would love another chance to drink this delicious beer.

from notes:

A: Pours a medium copper orange with a slight sudsy tan head that recessed quickly.

S: On the nose is a big pine resin aroma, sweet caramelized malt and loads of pungent grapefruit compliments of the massive Chinook hopping. There is also some light dark burnt brown sugar sweetness.

T: The flavor is quite smooth with a big offering of dried grapefruit and pine hopping. There is some dried citrus and a nice piney woodiness as well. The spicy dried citrus nature and sweet malting highlight this beer.

M: The mouthful is oily, somewhat slick off the tongue on the swallow with smooth carbonation.

D: Drinkability is good, a nice rounded bitterness balanced well with malt sweetness makes this easy to consume. Highly recommended and case worthy for future aging and consumption.

One of the great things about moving to San Diego is being a short 20-minute drive from the new Stone Brewery. I became a big fan of Stone while living in Arizona, so I love being able to drive up and pick up specialty fills like this Double-Dry Hopped 10th Anny Ale with minimal effort. Today, I was able to have a great buffalo burger too and sample Damnation Ale, Moyler's Hopsickle, and Lagunitas Hairy Eyeball. Anyway, on with the review...

Appearance- Nice light orange-red color; frothy white head that was mostly lasting, beautiful, intricate lacing that lingers throughout

Smell- Very pleasant hoppy and sweet aroma, strong citrus tones

Taste- First taste characterized by citrus consistent with aroma, heavy grapefruit emphasis, well balanced hoppiness nicely balanced by light malts

Mouthfeel- Medium body, syrupy/oily texture, soft carbonation

Drinkability- Very drinkable double-hopped IPA. The smooth citrus profile plays well with the extra hoppiness. I haven't had the standard 10th for a while, so it is hard to make comparisons, but I think that I will quickly make my way through this delicious growler over the weekend . . .

Picked up a growler of this today at Stone. I have had plenty of this beer both on tap and bottled, but not the Dry Hopped version.
Appearance and Smell are excellent with an orangy red color and smell like a fresh pine cone. Nice fluffy head that lasts and plenty of lacing after.

I feel the dry hopping has skewed the great flavor this beer had and kind of put it out of balance. The malt profile is all but gone and the Hops is huge and in your face. I am a hophead, but this is even a bit overboard for me.

Same great smooth creamy mouthfeel of a great DIPA and the alcohol burn seems to have been mellowed a bit either by aging or the dry hopping.

I am going to make a valiant effort to finish this growler while it is fresh, but at 10%, I am not sure I will make it. Overall, still a worthy effort, but I feel the original version on tap, or better yet, on cask at the 10th Anniversary party, are superior and more drinkable!!
