I drank this out of a 3 liter bottle split with my roommates. No way in hell I could drink this by myself. Review on the way:
Note ahead of time, this bottle is the 10th anniversary with no bottled on date. I have some 11th anniversary in the fridge, so this bottle is at least about 1 1/2 years old.
Appearance is a cloudy amber/orange with a very respectable lacing. For a 10%, "aged" beer this one really did leave a decent sticky lacing all the way down.
Getting ahead of my notes, the smell has more hops present in it than the taste does. That said, I am thoroughly impressed with the hop presence after the aging of this bottle. Definite sweet/caramel malts present as well, more prominent than the hops.
As mentioned, the hops are more noticeable in aroma than in taste. However I admit they are impressively noticeable in the taste considering that this beer has been waiting to be opened for about 1 1/2 years. Sticky and sweet are the two defining taste characteristics of this beer.
Medium bodied, smooth yet biting sourness are what I'm getting from the mouthfeel.
I only drank 1 liter of this 3 liter bottle, so I'm reviewing this drinkability based on 1 liter of the 10th anniversary. Definitely strong at 10%. I honestly would drink another (whether or not that would be advisable). The malt sweetness after a year+ of aging is still not too overpowering for an IIPA. I'm very impressed with this IIPA for holding strong this long.
I've got to thank my roommate for buying this 3Liter for my birthday. Excellent present and a great chance to taste a fantastic beer. Cheers to stone.

3L Growler stored in my cooler, and opened 5/24/08, aged approx 2 years.
I remember having this fresh, and enjoying it immensely, this being the IIPA that introduced me to just how fruity/citrusy an IIPA could be. Let's see how's it's held up...
A: Mostly clear, dark amber-gold. Not too much head, but I think asking for the growler to hold all the carbonation for 2 years is asking a bit much. Looks inviting nonetheless!
S: The malt has definitely over-taken things here. Plenty of caramelly goodness, but there's a distinct honey tint to the aroma as well. That's interesting. The citrusy hops are still there, but just in the background now.
T: It's pretty much a barleywine now. The maltiness is a really nice, mellow caramel/honey sweetness. This is followed by a bit of citrus rind bitterness/dryness, and a hit of raw alcohol on the finish. The fresh fruitniness I remember from the fresh bottle is gone. Sadness.
M: Mouthfeel is excellent. Even with a lower carbonation, the beer coats the mouth nicely, and provides an excellent fullness.
As an IIPA, I'd say this one is definitely past it's prime, but as an experiment in aging beer, it's pretty damn interesting.

On tap in a pint glass.
Pours a dark amber red in color with off white lacing that doesn't hold, head dissipates relatively quickly.
Smells of coriander, grapefruit and pine, very hoppy on the nose.
Tastes fruit forward but this is quickly overtaken with a slightly sweet malty finish.
Interestingly complex beer with a great feel, I'm still chewing on it in fact. Good drinkability matches its hop/malt makeup.
This beer is apparently about 18 months old, released from Stone's cellar. I hadn't had the opportunity to taste it near its original release date.

Poured from growler into pint glass. Amber color with a thick white head. Smells incredible with notes of pineapple, mango, pine, caramel, and a touch of alcohol. Taste is similarly complex, starting with a very obvious pineapple taste, that fades into bready malts, caramel, and piny, hop bitterness. Alcohol is well hidden with only some warming in the throat. Mouthfeel is full-bodied and creamy. Very drinkable for such a big beer. This is definitely Stone's best creation, and one my favorites in general.

Bottle courtesy of DrJay on BA. Pours a rich amber color with a big offwhite head and some light lacing. Smell is malty with caramel like sweetness along with some sweet citrus. Little to no hop prensence left. Taste is caramel, alcohol, and candied orange peels. Somewhat surprised that the hops have basically entirely faded and that the alcohol is still this present. Decent, but not what it was intended to be any longer, I'm guessing.

Huge thanks to Papago Brewpub and Stone Brewing for putting on a Stone showcase including this amazing beer.
Gorgeous appearance; dark orange with good tan head. It throws out a powerful pine/citric aroma, and offers up an outstanding, pepper-tinged flavor that showcases the full body.
This beer is a huge hop bomb, without losing any more drinkability than necessary. It's a treasure, and deserving of its reputation.

Served from a 22oz bomber in my SABL glass at between fridge and cellar temperature.
Look: Stored on it's side, the bottle showed a noticeable ribbon of sediment down one side and I uncapped and poured it. As expected from that sediment, the beer was faintly hazy with a toasted orange color. The pour was viscous, as the 10% ABV would have you guess, and the head formed in a slow but powerful uprush of bubbles from the bottom of the glass, rising to a sticky, off-white head of two finger thickness. Lacing comes in sappy, iridescent bubbled, concentric rings that multiply with each sip and go nowhere. Looking good!
Smell: Citrusy west-coast American hops, leaning toward sweetly juicy, in the vein of a ruby red grapefruit drizzled with light honey. Not much to report in the malt department other than the detectable sweetness. Some florals; crisp and fresh.
Taste: Well rounded, medium bodied maltiness helps this beer begin with a very nice sweetness that's not overdone. The almost unhideable alcohol comes in without pause in the middle, setting up the hop whipcrack on the back of the tongue. The finish is quite dry and the aftertaste is that of wet hops. An all around pleasant journey for a DIPA, when you put aside the heat from the alcohol.
Feel: Slick and slightly syrupy on the way in, with a good puffiness and tingle on the tongue shortly thereafter. The swallow is slick and sticky, leaving hop residue all the way down, and ending with embers in the belly.
Drink: Well, there is no doubting that Stone's hop-bomb beers are all very well crafted and quite tasty to boot. They've certainly gotten that aspect of their craft down, along with a penchant for keeping the ABV pumped up. This beer is no exception, even though personally, I think DIPAs are a little overplayed in the game of "extreme brewing". Nevertheless, this beer is easy to drink, and a nice treat for your bitter taste buds. Happy Anniversary, Stone!

Thanks to autumnaldave for the chance to try this!
Commemorative Label #9 of 10: "I'm not worthy" haha.
Pours a murky golden/brown/red color, little head with little lacing. Second pour gives much more head, more frothy looking, with slightly more lacing.
Smell is not as hoppy as I expected, although there is a decent deal of hops, a strong fruity aroma is present with some citrus, very inviting.
Taste is a little different than other DIPA's I've had, pretty unique as I've sure it's mellowed out since bottling and matured. Piney hop bitterness is highly melded with the malt and a fruitiness (most likely orange as I'm picking up some orange peel). It's also fairly syrupy with low carbonation.
It would have been interesting to have tried this when it was first released as the hop presence has certainly decreased. It seems as if this DIPA has crossed style barriers as it seems more like a barleywine now.

Thanks to Wasatch for the bottle.
A: Rich red body with a nice off-white head. Pours a bit syrupy.
S: The aroma is still pretty strong, even with a year plus on the bottle. It's very sweet with piney notes and a touch of citrus.
T: The flavor is pretty sweet as well with decent bitterness. The hop flavor is mostly piney with a hint of orange though. It leaves a lasting bitterness.
M: Pretty heavy on the tongue. It is a bit syrupy and there isn't much carbonation left.
D: Not too shabby, but probably on the downhill.

Picked up a growler of this at Stone on Saturday.
A: I was worried about cabonation so a fairly aggressive pour which revealed a slightly syrupy but clear deep orange with a tiny bit of red/brown in the middle. Big fluffy white three finger head that slowly dissipated into a thick film.
S: Mild tropical malts, somewhat reminiscant of Double Bastard but not nearly as strong, with a mild citrus and pine hop scent. The smell is really not overwhelming, not nearly as strong as some of their other brews.
T: Sweet tropical esters come on strong and linger to the finish. Soon after the sweet malt base comes a mini hop blast. Mostly pine and not the typical Stone citrus.
MF: Carbonation is not really a problem, although it's very mild for an IPA. I do wonder if this was more carbonated a year ago, or even right off the tap. Syrupy and thick with a strong alcohol flavor.
D: This is quite good, but not nearly as strong as I had expected. At this point, it's quite similar to Double Bastard, although the flavor is toned down quite a bit. Really a pretty mellow beer flavor wise. I guess I would call it a malty IIPA, reminds me a bit of the summer Yulesmith. The drinkability is a bit deceptive because of the flavor, and I think it would be easy to put away a few pints of this before realizing that you were pretty messed up. Glad I got to try this, but the 11th was better, IMO.

I still have a case and a half of this beer and enjoy one every now and then. Its interesting that since my bottles have been sitting in my closet they taste different than the one I had in the bottle at the brewery at winter storm. Their bottle still has all the nice hop goings on that it did when it was new where as mine is more of a barleywine. Either way, I love it.
The beer pours a brilliant red color thats moderately clear, it does get a little hazy when its cold. Theres some nice white fluffy head that doesn't last long. I gave the appearance a 4.5 because of that really cool red color.
The smell is of sweet carmel malts. Its not as complex once it starts loosing the hop flavor. The bottle from the brewery still had all the floral hops that smelled wonderful. The beer has slowly become a barleywine over the course of a year. Its become very sweet and still has some bitterness. Its only fault is that it has a lot of alcohol flavor to it when its warm. I actually really enjoy this drink. When its fresher it is closer to a DIPA with a moderate hop flavor and even a little citrus.
I can drink this stuff all day and will contiune to do so for another year or two.

Served on tap at Beachwood BBQ in Seal Beach, CA
Golden Amber color, slight chill haze.
Earthy & floral hop aromas with hints of biscuit and caramel malt.
Flavors are definatley tipped to the malt side. Toasted and caramel malt flavors with a certain "graininess". Hop bitterness backs the malt, however it is lacking up-front hop
flavors and the impact of a big hop nose.
This beer is full bodied and almost goes down like oatmeal. Alcohol is evedent and warming
which is this beer's most redeeming quality.
I tried this same beer from a 22oz bottle about a year ago and I remember it as having much
more hops flavor and aroma. Now without all the hops going on it is much less intersting.
It is still a decent beer, but there are many better ones.

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ, in Seal Beach, CA, about 1 and 1/2 years old at time of tasting, I'm estimating,
A: Pours a pale brown, amber, if you will, with a small white head, with some lacing into a pint glass.
S: Pine hops, citrus, caramel malt, some alcohol and brown sugar.
T: As Gabe described, this beer, at this point in its evolution, is a lot more like a barleywine than a Double IPA. There is a major malt character that wasn't there before, when this beer was a hop bomb in 2006. Nice caramel and toffee flavour arises after aging, this is the major character, good, solid pine and citrus character from the hops. It's molded into a beer that's reminiscent of English Strong Ale, quite complex.
M: Smooth, resiny, oily, medium-bodied, nice hoppy feel in the mouth and in the aftertaste.
D: A nice, drinkable beer from Stone. It is interesting to see how this beer evolves from year to year. Hopefully, I'll be able to try it next year.

This brew is different. I mean that will all respect to Stone.
This beer looks and smells great, however, the taste is a little different. The taste is a little stale and odd. It's spicy but its stale. I would have loved to try this and the 9th ann fresh. I really wish I had been of age to try these brews fresh.
Overall, I this this brew would be good. I really think I had a bad bottle. Fresh or aged (properly) this brew should and is good.

Pours a lovely bright copper amber color with nice off-white head, some lacing in streaks and fingers. The nose is full of fruity esters, more barleywine nose than IPA. I imagine the the last year has mellowed out the nose quite a bit from any hop bomb, but even still it has nice pine citrus notes.
Taste is delicious. Warm and inviting, a full body and divine carbonation, its a thick and tasty brew, full of malt and hop both. They just roll over one another, sweet sticky malts full of orangy hop juicy goodness. Don't know what it was like fresh, but I have a habit of having these Ani. ales a year old, and that seems to be how I like them.

A tulip glass served at the Blind Tiger's Stone 12/12/12/12 day. Yes, this is the 10th Anniversary.
A: The ale has a brilliant amber color, showing off bright highlights when daylight pours through it. There is little head but thie beer doesn't need a head to shine.
S: The nose is American barleywine, full of thick grains and equally (if not greater) hops. The vinous scents wafting off the glass are incredible; the year has done wonders for the overall aroma even if it diminished the hops.
T: A sip, so exquisite! Thick malts emerge, struggling with thick hops for attention. This beer has taken on a new dimension, losing some hop kick but picking up a deliciously thick grainy body. The flavors have taken on a barleywine-like profile, with the intensity of the malts finally managing to equal the intensity of the hops. Further sips reveal that the hops are still a presence, adding a piney sweet flavor that seems to be full of sugars. The bitterness from those hops has eroded a bit but it still leaves a lasting presence.
M: Oh so delicious, this keg has withstood the test of time. The flavor profile has evolved but will not disappoint a fan of the original creation.
D: The intense flavors make more than a glass or two difficult, but if you happen to stumble across this beauty on tap, by all means get a glass. The dimensions that the beer has taken are impressive.

22 oz bottle via jasonjlewis
A: Pours a deep amber/copper under a creamy white head. OK lacing, good retention.
S: Hoppy with a nice malt backbone which gives way to some caramel. Hops are more piney than citrusy, but have obviously faded because the malt is so easily picked up, but that's not to say the hops are any where near gone. The hop character does fade with temperature and gives way to more hints of alcohol.
T: A nice sweetness up front with a piney hoppiness to finish. Good amount of bitterness and slightest hint of alcohol. Taste has a medicinal quality to it that throws it a little off between beginning and end.
M/D: Feel is pretty thick, medium to high medium, and a little oily. Carbonation is a tad high on this one. Drinkability is good. I didn't have this one fresh, but it seems to have held up reasonably well.

Had this beer on-tap at Frisco Grille in Columbia, MD
A: Amber colored, with nice, thick, creamy white head. Beer was fairly cloudy, maybe because the keg was nearly empty and might have been picking up some sediment from the bottom.
S: Beautiful hop aroma, with pine scent dominating.
T: A big alcoholic warmth with sweet malt undertones, fading into a strong, but not overpowering hop bitterness. A really nice balance, in my opinion, but you can definitely tell that this is a high ABV brew.
M: Much different than the 11th Anniversary beer, with alcoholic warmness dominating over hop flavor and bitterness.
D: A great beer, but not something to be imbibed in large doses. Would be great on a cold winter day.

Had on tap at Ashleys after a year of age- still hoppy.
A- Pours a very cloudy dark orange. A finger of head dissipates quickly but leaves thick lacing. It's hard to call it spiderweb when there's this much of it. More like sheets of white.
S- Carmel and toffee and then a blast of tangerine and orange. The smell doesn't compare to the strength of the taste.
T- Wow, after a year you'd think there wouldn't be much hops on this one. But you'd be wrong. A strong hop waft of sweet orange, tangerine, and flowering pine. Then there is sweet syrupy malt, like a delicious pecan carmel roll. The blend between these two is great, where sweet malt leaves off, sweet orange takes over.
M- Syrupy and coating my mouth, leaving a taste of hops around the tongue, and in my burps. Delicious.
D- A great beer, with hidden alcohol, and a great blend between the malt and hops, but strong on both accounts.

A: Pours a deep copper with a small amount of head. Some lacing on the glass.
S: Biscuity malt followed by big notes of alcohol. Slight hints of hops are present.
T: Lots of sweet, caramal malt, followed by big booming notes of warming alcohol. Somewhere behind this are some subtle citrus hops notes. I can only imagine what this was like fresh. It's still tasty, but has aged into almost a barleywine type drink.
M: Viscous, yet smooth.
D: This is a tasty beer, despite losing a lot of the hops from when it was fresh. It's strong, but good.

22 oz bottle poured into
Poured at 48 degrees
Cellared for one year and opened in time to compete with the newly released 11th anniversary.
A - Pours a dark brownish-orange with 1/2 inch tan colored head. Lacing is nice when tipped, but drops quickly.
S - Incredibly biscuity malt flavor that seems buttery, sweet, and breaded. Caramelized sugar. Light grapefruit citrus hop scent that seems to have faded with time as it is not the most prevalent compared to the sweetness.
T - Starts with a caramelized sweetness reminiscient of the top of a creme brulee melds with a quickly approaching alcoholic burn. Grapefruity hop flavor is hidden in there somewhere. Alcohol is surprisingly apparent.
M - Sticky, molasses-esque mouthfeel with a mild carbonation and slight alcoholic burn. MIldly bitter aftertaste competes with the burn.
D - Flavor grows on you as you sip, but the taste after a year is a bit harsh and hard to truly enjoy. Definitely want to share this bomber at a strong 10%.
Didn't review this one originally, but I do recall enjoying it more when it first came out. As of now I certainly enjoy the 11th Anniversary quite a bit more. Might be time to finish off the rest of my 10th's before they become undrinkable.

ah, the anniversary beer that bucks the recent trend of anniversary beers I've been on lately. Had this in the cellar for some time and finally got around to trying it. Well worth the wait
A - deep reddish brown color with a billowy white head
S - Cut a grapefuit in half, coat with brown sugar, bake till the sugar carmelizes --> crack open and stick your nose in. Yeah it's hoppy but there's a sharpness in the nose for emphasis.
T - Hops as noted above with a wonderful rich smooth caramel malt effect and a definite ABV warmth. Melds very nicely across the tongue.
M - full bodied, nicely carbonated, creamy smooth and resiny hoppy.
D - Enjoyed each and every sip! Definitely worth a try if you get a chance.

Cloudy orange/brown color with a beige head showing fair retention. The nose displays a developed malty richness over time; dark buttery caramel, toffee, hot alcohol esters, slight piney hop touch and a little sulfery funk. The malt sweetness shows range; caramel and buttery toffee, molasses, roasted grains, nutty. A piney hop bite in the back balances out the malt characters and herbal floral hop characters that are soft at times and oily, resinous other times jump around from sip to sip. A little metallic, hot alcohol spice hangs on the palate, boozy...reminds you of its strength. Much of the hop fruitiness has faded with age and mostly noticed in the finish with larger fruity, piney, pineapple and acidic citrus notes come out. Full bodied and a thick, oily mouthfeel and creamy carbonation is very nice.

22oz. Bomber
Pours a cloudy burnt orange color, nice carbonation, the head was small creamy off-white, there is some small islands and sticky lacing hanging around. The nose is hoppy, malty, citrusy, some pines, and caramel. The taste is superb, hoppy, good dose of malts, citrus/piney, and some caramel tones, there is also a nice sweetness going on. The finish is slightly dry and bitter. Nice chewyness as well. Medium body. Very drinkable, really enjoying this one today, highly recommended.

Enjoyed at Capital Ale House Innsbrook for Beer Geek Week '07
A: Pours a deep, opaque amber hue, glowing orange, roughly 1 finger of head that showed decent retention and lacing.
S: Sweet maltiness with notes of grapefruit citrus; has a mellow, candy-like orange scent to it.
T: Hop complexity that's second to none. A malty base provides a smooth intro for a big dose of bitterness. Floral and citrusy hops wash over the palate and flood the mouth with one the better hop profiles I have yet to taste. Immaculate.
M: Big, creamy, and mealy... a bit of syrupy hop residue with a fluffy, full mouthfeel.
D: Outstanding brew, and it's evident why this was only brewed once. I originally enjoyed the last bottle available to the public at Capital Ale House downtown with nickss and roughsax; part of one of our original BA gatherings. This time around, after a year had gone by, this thing had changed a bit, but was still just as great.
