Somewhat unaware of the hoopla that surrounded the release of a new beer from Stone, I picked one up for no other reason than it was the first one that greeted my eye as I wandered through John's Market. I'm not a huge Stone fan -- they sort of seem like the Yankees of microbreweries -- but I'm always game for something new. Upon first impression, it's a mellower beer than I was expecting... is this a wheat beer? There's a nice wall of lace on the inside of the glass. It's got a sharp citric hop tweak, and some cutting bitterness, but it is short and over with quickly. There are some bready malts with peach and orange fruit flavors, Scottish shortbread, and what seems to me like a wheaty tang. There's also an underlying metallic quality that could be the sharp hops riding tandem with the excessive alcohol. I have to say, I don't see any way that the high alcohol helps this beer; it would taste much better without the "dead zone" that a high abv creates. There is almost a spoilt-Ringwood sour apple taste too... This is all too bad since my first impressions of the beer were totally favorable. The smell is still pretty good. And there's still a pleasant malt-and-hop interplay on the tongue before you take a wince-inducing swallow. But Jesus. This alcohol is too much. It makes the beer entirely unappealing.

On tap at Lucky Baldwins in Pasadena, CA.
Pours a hazy light orange with a foamy orange-tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, citrus zest, and some slight perfume-like aromas. Taste is much the same with a brown sugar flavor as well. There is a mild hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

Had this one a long, long time. Figure I may as well drink it on a hot summer day.
Golden body. Finger of creamy white head.
Nose is a bit stale. Over-sweet malt and hops that once were...
Flavor is still pretty good. Strong but smooth. Marshmallow malt, light citrus, a little spiciness. Interesting blend of flavors.
Mouthfeel is solid, slick, low to moderate carb.
Overall, this is still a solid strong ale. I know that Stone was going for something lighter than their usual anniversary IPA with this one. They succeeded, but I wish I knew what it tasted like when fresh.

Draft to 4oz Taster
WinterStorm 2012
App- A caramel brown with ambers and orange intermixed. A small 1/8" head of small tan head and zero cling.
Smell- Smelled just like a BW. Big malts with a lot of citrus and very smooth aromatics.
Taste- A bit of a good mix. Malty, spicy, and very DIPA like fruits. A bit peppery.
Mouth- A good medium bodty with a medium carbonation level. A good malty and citrus residual flavor.
Drink- I enjoyed this. Strong ales are pretty hard to mess up. This one was just a touch old for me.
