Presentation: Sampler at the Stone Brewing Company Special Event at the Stuffed Sandwich, San Gabriel, California, held on 24-26 July 2003. This was the First of the Eight Stone Beers Samplers. Originally released in August 1999 and served on draft.
Appearance: Light golden color, infused with a milky protein looking haze. A thin white collar head on the small sampler offered little in the way of presentation. However, a massive white frothy and rocky head on the half-pint that I ordered after finishing all of the Events Eight Stone Samplers on offer, hinted at a more lively beer. In fact, it was noted that this beer was poured draft into a Jug towards the end of the night. This Jug, which had a massive internal crust, was then used to decant the lively urban upstart beer into the plastic sampler glasses, as well as half and full pint proper glasses. It looked good I can tell you.
Nose: Massive floral aroma, bitter with flowery hop whiffs akin to crushing fresh hops in the palm of your hand and sniffing the green oily skid-marks that they leave behind. Beautiful and extremely enticing.
Taste: Stunningly gorgeous, rounded floral hops introduce this golden throat charmer. In the middle, the bitterness rises and kicks in; this then starts to transcend the floral aspects of the beer. Astringent finish that leaves a freshly crushed hop feel on the tongue way too good and seriously too hoppy for a 4 year old beer.
Mouthfeel: Above average, but with an oily hop presence that puzzles. How can a beer this old, have such a fresh hoppy mouthfeel? Who knows but it does!!
Drinkability: 3rd Anniversary IPA!!!! I tried hard to treasure the sampler, but nevertheless, its drinkability deemed this task to be almost impossible. It is a good job I went back for another half Pint, but that too disappeared far too quickly. Seriously quaffable.
Overall: Was this really 4 years old?? A mature rounded floral IPA, whose hoppiness was of the flowery type. Stunningly marvelous, and by far this was my favorite of the eight Stone samplers that I had tonight during this Stone Special Event at the Stuffed Sandwich. Im deeply saddened to think that I may never have this again.

I was one of the lucky ones able to take home a bottle of this now very rare elixir from the Stone Anniversary Ale tasting event at Sun Devil Liquors last night. Pours a hazy sunset orange with a rocky white head. Still retains beautifully after these 4 years and leaves a great amount of lace. What a hoppy aroma! if it's this hoppy now, I can't imagine how it must have been when it was fresh. It figures since they used 3 times the hops used in regular Stone IPA on this one. Spicy, earthy, piney, and citrusy hops backed by just enough malt to balance it out well. As for the taste, it's very well balanced, and very similar to regular Stone IPA's. Spicy and rind-like hops with sweet bready malt. The tiniest hint of alcohol is noticeable here and there. Starts out sweet and spicy, then jumps to nice, crisp bitterness in the middle, then finishes crisp with a good mix of sweet and dry. Rind-like character remains in the aftertaste along with a little grapefruit. It's amazing how well this has held up over the years. At the tasting, the 4th Anniversary was the best out of the 3 IPAs, but this one wasn't far behind, and could probably hold up for another year, maybe more. It's not likely that I'll be able to find out though, unfortunately.

Just got this bottle the other day. I'm obsessed with trying every beer in the world and the fact that this is 9 years old and its an IPA wasn't about to stop me. Over all I'm impressed with how this has held up.
This is a beautiful looking beer. Orange, plenty of white head foam, tons of lacing, decent retention. The only reason it didn't get a 5 is because of the yeast chunks. It has gotten hazy with age too.
Smell is very malty, only a vary faint hint of citrusy hops. The mere fact that theres any hops left in the nose at all is pretty impressive.
Flavor is quite sweet with a bit of dry hop bitterness left. Again, 9 years and a hop presence is impressive to say the least.
Body is medium, leaning towards thick. Nice for sipping. Enough CO2. Quite drinkable. It would be a good beer to introduce a non hop lover to the style, but considering how rare this is it's probably not worth giving to someone that couldn't apreciate the rarity of this beer.

On tap at Stone Winter Storm
A: Light vibrant straw color with a haze to it. Head is almost non-existent except for a crisp white ring which remains around the glass.
S: Grapefruit, lemon & chamomile tea.
T: First thoughts are fruit salad. Melded together are apple, orange, strawberry, grape with chunks of banana. Honey binds the flavors together with caramel intertwined as well. Huge dirty bitterness is present and stands out like a sore thumb. Finishes with citrusy lemon peel and more dirty bitterness.
M: Medium body and somewhat thin and dry.
D: This beer isn't as juicy as the rest of the aged beers I've had today. Age has made this one off balanced...specifically the bitterness.
