A: The beer pours nice and dark. It has a thick head that leaves acceptable lace on the glass.

S: A pleasant dark smell, but it is lacking any form of character.

T: Caramel, sweet fruit and coffee notes.

M: Very nice smooth carbonation, combined with a medium to heavy body.

O: The beer goes down exceptionally easy. I would definitely have another.

Bottle smuggled back for me, thanks for the opportunity Tony!
Pours a solid dark brown with a smallish quickly dissipating off white head. Smells heavy on the caramel and burnt sugars. Light fruity aromas and little to no hop. The flavor is rich caramel and earthy burnt sugars with a touch of mineral. Spirited carbonation gives a spritzy bubbly mouthfeel. Well it doesn't suck, but the caramel seems a bit overbearing and artificial.

In Maputo/Mozambique for the first time, so I am obviously going to try all the local fare. The Preta from Laurentina is decent....and I am not a dark beer fanatic. The beer poured dark caramely nearly opaque color with thin head that is not lacing. The smell is sweet with hints of chocolate and burnt corn. The taste is a decently balance beer than is on the sweeter side. Coffee/peat is more present in the taste than the scent. The mouthfeel is a light to medium body with good carbonation. Overall this is a decent beer and is probably preferred over the other local options.

A 340ml bottle with no visible BB date. A visiting friend from SA gave this to me back in December. The blurb on the label mentions the use of four types of malt, and the ingredient list includes cane sugar.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A deep reddish-brown that appears black unless held to the light. Yields a decent head of creamy tan foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding. Aroma of sweet dark malt - a tad cloying. Notes of molasses, caramel, chocolate, dried fruit and faint coffee. A slight solventy hint in the background.

Tastes of sweet dark malt with a dry finish. Notes of molasses, dried fruit, chocolate, mild roasted grain, faint coffee and stewed hops. Slightly spicy. A subtle dry bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, but pretty thin and watery. Mildly astringent. Aftertaste of sweet dark malt.

Not bad - certainly a cut above when compared to most of the African beers I've tried. A reasonably complex flavour, if rather on the sweet side. The body is let-down; insubstantial and thin. Not really sure if this corresponds to it's categorisation as a märzen, but it's hard to say what else it might be. Goes down easily enough - worth trying if you come across it.

Purchased September 16th 2011 at Julio's in Durban South Africa. 340ml bottle poured into a water glass.

a - Pours a dark amber/brown color with a thin tan head.

s - Smells of roasted malts, light chocolate, and slightly fruity/sugary notes

t - fruits/sugars, roasted malts, and chocolate again. More chocolate than the nose, with a slightly metallic or mineral finish.

m - Medium body and moderate/high carbonation.

o - Overall the best macro-brewed beer I've had in Africa so far. Very drinkable and easily outclasses most of the other beers available in South Africa. One note though is I definetly would not describe this beer as a Dunkelweizen. Furthermore, in South Africa it is incorrectly marketed as a stout. However, it tastes a lot like a Märzen but with a more of a roasty flavor than you would expect. Very pleasant though no matter what you call it.

From 03/27/11 notes. Brought to a local DC tasting by Travir (RB), straight from Africa. 340ml bottle poured into a tulip.

a - Pours a dark mahogany brown color with one inch of tan head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of roasted malts, light chocolate, and metallic notes, Would be nice without the metal.

t - Tastes of metal, roasted malts, and chocolate again. More chocolate than the nose, but also more metal.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation.

o - Overall probably the best beer from Africa Gene brought back, but the metallic notes in the nose and taste are offputting. Wouldn't seek out or look to have again.
