On tap at Tria on Walnut Street in Philadelphia, PA. Poured into a 10-oz tulip glass.
The pour yields a hazy beer on the coppery side of amber in color. It is topped off by a 2-finger head that is reasonably well-retained. As a result, thick rings of lace form as I sip, but as I drink more, it slinks its way back down the glass and becomes more delicate in appearance.
The aroma gives an unexpected sour and bretty aroma that complements light floral undertones. The main components are some fruity esters from the yeast, some spicy phenols, and tart cherry aromas, presumably from the barrels. The flavor is fairly similar, though the tart cherry gives way to flavors that are more reminiscent of red wine. They are very subtle, though. Oaky tannins come through more, as do clove and white pepper phenols. The hibiscus is more of a footnote at this point, which makes me wonder if the barrel aging helped to mute it.
Enjoyable and easy to drink, L'Olmaia did a pretty good job in barrel aging a presumably delicate beer. At such a low ABV (relatively) with such nuanced flavors, the wine could have easily taken over. The tart notes were a nice touch, and I wasn't expecting them. Overall a solid beer, and another hit from Italy.
