Pours a clean orange-ish to copper color with an off white head. In the aroma, a small earthiness and notes of spice. In the taste, a caramel like roast, and somewhat spicy, yet a bit thin. A spice like bite and a medium to lighter bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry spice like aftertaste. Hint of earth and some spice, decent and average.

Pours a copper color with ruby highlights and a one finger head which gives way to some lacing. The aroma is of caramel malts and some pale malts with hints of citrus hops. The taste has a nice caramel malt backbone along with some pale malt. At the backend is a slight citrus and pine hop bite with a little hint of sweetness in the middle to backend. The mouthfeel is moderate to heavy carbonation. Overall it is a decent beer, nice flavor, a little weak aroma. The sweetness and hop bite bring the middle and end through nicely. An easy drink.

a: nice translucent amber color, slight off white head with little retention

s: nice caramel malt profile, slight hint of hops

t: caramel malt and toffee give way to a slight hop assertivness. I taste a chalkyness... not pleasant.

m&d: slightly chewy mouth, medium bodied. drinkable, but I would not ever drink this again.

A pretty good beer followed up by the Bear Ass Pale Ale.

A sturdy dark amber colored beer holds a terse head that didn't stick around as well as I would have hoped. No real lacing or frothiness. Equally sturdy of caramelized malts show a touch of toastiness and toffee. Assertive hops give a grassy, piney character to the nose and taste. The beer is somewhat combative between the hops and the malts but ultimately the malts prevail with a bit more malt sweetness than I prefer. They are obviously going for an Irish Red Ale. But the beer lacks a touch of creaminess in the mouthfeel and remains a bit heavy on residual sugars.

In the end, it's a nice beer but the qualities that make Irish Reds great has a hard time showing here.

Bizarre carmelly citrus taste with a thinner than average finnish. Reminds me of a very heavy and less bright Killians. Pours much thicker but head has no retention whatsoever, at least not on my glass. Mouthfeel is thinner than average as well, for some reason I expected more of a candy-bar feel. Drinkability is simply average; this is an above average beer but they themselves can do much better.

Presentation: Had on tap at a local restaurant. Arrived in a tall, skinny beer mug.

Appearance: No head by the time it got to the table, just some off white foam on top and a ring around the glass. The beer itself is a deep red/copper color, with maybe just a hint of chill haze.

Smell: Slightly sweet malt with metallic earthy tones.

Taste: Fairly sweet malt with hints of caramel and biscuit. Finishes with a medium bitter finish.

Mouthfeel: Average carbonation level. Body is good.

Drinkability: A good beer with solid yet tame flavors. By far the best beer at the restaurant I was in. My wife had a Killian's Irish Red and it tasted like water next to this one.

Enjoyed on tap as part of a sampler on my first day in Columbus after moving here.

Poured from the tap into a wine style tasting glass.

Appearance- Beer pours a brown orange amber with a slight head of bone hued foam. Lacing clings to the sides and no creamy muck on the top after the head dissipates.

Smell- Amber brown malts with a sweet caramel aroma. Hops smell quite balanced. Very sweet smelling for a red ale, but oftentimes the category is a catch all for breweries.

Taste- Rich and smoth with a substantial hoppy note. A bit thin but I'll save that for the mouthfeel category. A bit of a burnt sensation, likely from darker malts. Hops more lingering on the finish with light creaminess and pine.

Mouthfeel- Creamy, light, and a bit thin and watery on the finish. Decently carbonated, medium thin bodied.

Drinkability- Quite smooth and drinkable for the swilling needs. Well worth a revisit one day.

I had a pint of this beer at Lucky's on Court Street in Downtown Athens, OH. It pours a nice scarlet red with a good head. It tasted like a fresh microbrew should. It was hoppy but not so overpowering. It was smooth with a lasting tang then a quick finish. It was a great accompaniment to the Italian sub it was served with. What a great paring! If you are ever in Athens stop by and grab a bite and a Buckeye Red!

A: Poured a deep redish-brown (or should I say scarlet?). Very rich color. Small, white head on it when poured.

S: Lovely malt aromas, touch of hops. Not as strong as I prefer in this style.

T: Similar to smells. Nice middle notes of the malt, which I love. The taste seemed closer to a Scottish Ale than a Strong Bitter. Touch of hoppy aftertaste, but none of it too strong.

M: Light creaminess. Not too thick.

D: Very nice for sipping. We sat out on the patio on a warm summer evening, and this drink was perfect. Went well with my fish and chips, too.

Overall, I'd gladly pick this one up again, although I've tasted stronger ales, and have other favorites at the Elevator.

A: Had this beer on tap in the house pint glass. This beer is a deep amber red. It has a small off-white head that gives some good lace.

S: The smell is floral and light with grain notes.

T: Not bad. Very well balanced. The hoppyness isn't over the top. It's smoother than an ESB but more robust than a Red Ale. Very unique.

M: Mouthfeel was light and fizzy.

D: Very drinkable beer.

Served as a sample at the Elevator Brewery. The color was amber, with some head. The smell seemed very off, almost rotten. The taste, however, was quite good, and the malt and hop mixed quite well in this one. Mouthfeel was smooth. As for drinkability, probably could have quite a few.

Well, being a PSU fan in Columbus, was hoping for the Buckeyes to bleed a bit, but wasn't the case that day, but an apropos name nonetheless. A solid beer, and one that I'd probably have again should I be in the neighborhood.

Elevator changed the name on this one from Bott Brothers ESB in an attempt to avoid scaring customers away with the word "bitter" and to cash in on OSU. Whatever. On draught at Players Sports Bar in the Adam's Mark hotel in downtown Columbus. Pours a rich amber color with a thin off-white head. Aroma is fairly hoppy with malt undertones. Medium-bodied and really not all that bitter after all. Slightly sweet finish after you get through the initial hops aftertaste. Not a great beer but I wish every hotel bar had an option like this.

This is a new name for the former ESB. The publican, Rita, told me that they had to change the name because too many people would not try something with the name Extra Special Bitter. Bitter this is not, in fact, it tends more to its malt side than the bittering hops. It has a good flavor indeed and is quite drinkable. The look is of clear amber under an ivory head. It shows good lacing effect and is smooth on the palate. A good, refreshing beer that is none the less for its name.

12oz bottle poured into pint glass.

Pours medium amber with a 1 inch khaki head. The head stays longer than I expected, over a minute. Sweet malty aroma which turns a little hoppy at the end. The hop bitterness seems to be equally matched with the malt here. Very balanced, and very easy to drink. I'm quite impressed with this one. Not every beer needs to knock your socks of with hops and strong ABV. This is just a plain, down and dirty beer. On a side note, I do think the name is kinda lame.

I wouldn't suspect it's not a red ale from the look of it; it's got the deep amber-red color, anyway. A creamy off-white head rises and displays moderate retention before it diminishes to a thinnish foam that is able to leave equally moderate lacing in a mix of spotting and light patching.
There's balance in this beer, as should be for the style(either attempted or techinical). Clearly there are caramel malts but I do get a mineral, earthy element with a bit of toast and a sweeter, toffee-like edge in the malts.
In the flavor, the moderate hops presence is grassy and piney, and balance with the malts is well maintained. Sweetness counters the bitterness, which likewise counters the sweetness. It's nothing mind-blowing, but it makes for good drinking and is complex enough to keep it from being boring.
The mouthfeel is almost as balanced as the rest, though I can see where someone might prefer to go a touch creamier and drop off a little bit of the thickness on the palate. It's not slick, but it comes close. The medium body holds it together well.

Pours a reddish amber with a slight creamy white head, which dissipated into a skim of foam on the surface. Not much lacing. Aroma is nutty, sweet malts.

Mouthfeel is smooth and viscous with snappy carbonation. Taste follows the aroma with nutty rich malt flavors, somewhat sweet, and a little hop bite in the background.

If you're not a hop fiend or simply want a change of pace, this should do the trick. Not exceptional, but not at all bad.

Poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass

Appearance: amber in color, 1/3 inch head, clear, high carbonation

Smell: light toasted malt, caramel, light hops

Taste: light toasted malt, caramel, toast, light hops

Mouthfeel: light bodied, high carbonation, sweet start with a slight bitterness

Overall: Very enjoyable ESB. Kind takes some of the best of an Irish red and combines it with a regular red ale. I like the mix of sweetness and bitterness here. Certainly a beer I would do a six of if I was in the area.

12 oz bottle, 5.7% abv. Slightly hazy amber color, with a rocky off-white head. Nice retention, along with a good coating of lace on the sides of the glass.

Slightly toasty aroma, a bit of toffee as well. A bit of earthy hops on the back end. Pretty simple in the nose.

Toasted malt up front, with a faint bready feel. Some caramel notes, no toffee though. Malt character is not as robust as I thought it might be. Earthy hops, with a herbal edge round things out.

Medium body, with some soft carbonation. A simple beer here, nothing outstanding in either direction.

A- Poured a clear dark orange color with a frothy off-white head that leaves coating lace.

S- Unexpected chocolately malt aroma, caramel, fruity esters, and grains

T- Toffee, big biscuit and grain flavor, mild indistinct fruitiness

M- Medium body, medium level of carbonation, fairly smooth, does not finish very dry

O- A very drinkable beer. Does not taste like any ESB I have ever had, but it is pretty good.

One of my hophead friends really likes this so I was wary..he loves IPA and I don't. This beer looks good, smells good, and is a pleasure to the mouth and tongue. It has a great balance between malt and hops..both can be enjoyed. The finish is clean and refreshing..not as neat as Pilsner Urquell or as malty as Paulaner Oktoberfest, but a harmonious blend of hops and malt. I am excited because it is also made right down the road in Columbus. I will make a trip there soon.

A-Pours a pale amber, nice but Buckeyes must bleed redder than this. A thin off white head has nice retention and a bit of stickiness.

S-Biscuity malt with a hint of roast, maybe an earthy hop or two. Nice.

T-Caramel malt and bready malt in a nice combination. Finish is nicely, and unexpectedly filled with hoppy bite. Very pleasant surprise.

M-Light to medium bodied, rich malt base for the style.

O-Very nice example of one of my less favorite styles. Good hops, nice malt.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle

A- a reddish copper in color, very clear, got a single finger off-white head that receded quickly. Slight lacing on the glass.

S - hints of malt and a bit of pine, somewhat subdued scents

T - slight Carmel on the front end, hops show up on the finish with a citrus and pine taste, nicely balanced brew, given the label stating red ale was expecting more malts.

D - at first was a bit put off by the brew as I was expecting something different, after I adjusted my expectation not a bad beer, nicely balanced, crisp finish, a beer you can easily drink.

12 oz bottle into a mug.

A - Color is a deep red/copper. Pour yields about a finger and a half of head. Retention is surprisingly quite nice, plus there's a decent amount of lace. Looks good so far.

S - Very muted. All I get is a bit of malt and a hint of citrus/grassy hops.

T - Malts and hops from the nose carry through. There is a hint of some caramel as well, but just a touch. Finish is crisp and quite bitter, it kind of snaps each sip to a close. The finish is a bit thin though and leaves a bit to be desired.

M - Mouthfeel is mid bodied with a noticeable amount of carbonation ... just a touch too much for my liking.

O - This is a decent, easy drinking beer. Based on the packaging I thought they were going for more of an irish red, but apparently this is supposed to be an ESB ... I'd prefer they were a bit more forward with the style instead of leaning heavily on the status of The Ohio State University to sell this beer.

2 bottles consumed 7 months apart. One was decent, one was nearing wretched territory; splitting the difference scorewise here.

New bottle reviewed 12/16/11:
12 ounce bottle courtesy of Ryan011235, poured into a LaChouffe tulip. Copperish amber with a modest off-white head and a bit of soapy lacing up top.

Nose has plentiful caramel with tobacco and a mysterious burnt character. A rather unpleasant, but distinctive surprise upon sipping. I handed it to my wife. “What’s this taste like to you?” “An old put out cigarette.” Yep, that’s what I thought, too. This one’s a real headscratcher. Plenty malty with tangy leafy hops, but the old ciggy flavor- stale tobacco and signed paper- is remarkably spot-on and completely distracting. I’ve heard of tossing all sorts of crazy stuff in the fermenter, but this takes the cake. Gross.

12 ounce bottle courtesy of Ryan011235, poured into a shaker pint. Hazy copper with hints of amber. A smallish but handsome initial creamy head drifts away in short order. A bit of lacing.

Smells of unbaked pie crust, caramel, some floral and light earthy hops, toasty grains. Nice combo of caramel and toasted malt flavors. Medium body in part because of the abundant carbonation; it's actually kinda thin in the finish. Lacking in the earthy and leafy hop character I prefer in ESBs, but there's a fair amount of pine and floral flavor.

Overall impression: Nothing wrong with an decent easy-drinking brew, and this one fits the bill.

A: Pretty normal looking beer, no lacing, head goes away quickly, and has a dark orange brown color.

S: Definitely caramel smell, maybe a hint of toffee and that's bout it

D: A fairly priced red ale that goes down smooth, pretty darn drinkable
