This looks innocent enough, actually a handsome coppery amber color with average foam. The smell is something a lot like leather with a whiff of the janitorial closet. Plenty of spritziness on the tongue.

The deep malty flavor seems to have evolved into something beyond the known beer universe. Extremely dry and repellently bitter and it ain't nothing to do with hops. This isn't exactly sour, but it has garbagey taste that makes me fear to drink more than a few sips. Doused matches, fermented chestnuts, oatmeal with motor oil. Does naugahyde have a flavor? This would be it.

I review this to discourage anyone from picking this up as a left-over curiosity. Check out the bugs in the brewery, lazy boys. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Central Market - Shoreline in north Seattle.

22 oz bottle from Roth’s Vista Market in Salem. $2.99. This seems rather late for a winter thus i suppose the low price..plus it was out in a warm shelf so here goes! Reddish amber coloured ale here, with a thick and creamy creme coloured head. Nose is simple caramel malt with faint hints of cinnamon sticks, nice. Smooth taste of burnt toffee, spice and the faintest hint of orange peel, finished black coffee. OK Mouthfeel is OK low carbonation and long lasting bitterness. Not bad but past its best.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a pint glass.

Appearance: dark ruby-brown with a little bit of haze to the body. Head is a finger of frothy tan foam. Not bad, overall; a good look for a winter warmer.

Smell: malty aroma has a very strong caramel character. Very rich, creamy and sweet; a bit one-note, but easily the most accurately caramel-smelling beer I've ever encountered. It's actually quite enticing.

Taste: again, extremely caramel-tastic. Malty with a hint of bitterness but mostly just caramel. What can I say? it appeals to me. It's a festive, appropriate take on a winter warmer; this would also be a fan-damn-tastic characteristic in a Wee Heavy.

Mouthfeel: rich body with a decent level of carbonation and a smooth, satisfying creaminess. Quite good.

Overall: I find I rather like this beer. Perhaps not an everyday choice due to sweetness, but I think it works quite well indeed as a representative of the style.

22ozer into New Belgium globe

Bourbon brown as it pours. Super dark in the glassware with a blood-red tinge. The frothy head was never thick and did not last long. Pretty color but disappointing head for sure. Scent is not strong and composed mainly of malts. Some dark fruits shine through the roast. Tastes amazingly chocolatey. A handful of semi-sweet chocolate chips melted into this one with some caramel, toffee, coffee, and toasty malts as well. Some resinous and roasted nutty flavors round out the dessert-like experience. Carbonation is medium and the body is thick but not overwhelmingly sticky. I am drinking this as I make dinner but will try to save the rest of my bomber for afterward. This is sweet and I like it but might suffocate some food pairings (and ruin appetites for anything that's not sweet).

22oz bottle poured into a large mug

Pours dark caramelly color with a light beige head, medium sized, pretty stable. Doesn't seem cloudy. Smell is sweet, caramel, toffee, nutty.

Taste is nutty-bitter, not much of the sweetness or caramel from the smell, but there is a little of the toffee.

Mouthfeel is a little thin and watery, but overall, pretty satisfactory beer. I like it.

22oz brown bomber with no freshness date.

LOOK: Dark mahogany, superb head

SMELL: Thick caramel, fresh bread, toasty, yeast, figs, spicy alcohol, brown sugar, brown bread

TASTE: Creamy, full-ish body, smooth, toasty, dried grass, bready, slightly nutty, modest hopping, herbal, faint buttery, warming alcohol, figs, golden raisins, ripe pears, caramel, toasted malt finish.

Wow, this is what I love to see in a winter seasonal. Toasted malt bomb where the hops and alcohol peak through enough to add some complexities. A real treat!!!

Tulip glass.

Pours a barleywine-like opaque dark amber color with scant stone colored head which quickly recedes to a ring. Smell is a lot of sweet caramel, some cherry and strawberry, not bad but kind of one dimensional. Taste is impressively lacking in flavor. A little caramel and cherry and some pepper. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full body. Overall, this tastes more like a barleywine than winter warmer. I would pass on this in the future.

22oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

A- dark carmel-like brown, with reddish hues. Thin khaki head, that lingers for quite a while.

S- Raisins, old fruit, sweet.

T- Also tastes of raisins, carmel, molasses, toffee.

D- Very smooth and drinkable.

O- Well, it tastes like Christmas, so I guess they nailed it.
