On tap December 2009 at the brewpub. Reviewed from notes.
Pours a light caramel brown. Brings forward quite a bit of sweetness and a bit of caramel and spice. Slightly hoppy. Taste brings hints of caramel and toffee, but mostly some generic sweetness. Feel is fairly light but works with the milder flavors. Drinkability is okay, but not a great representation of the style.

Reddish with white soapy head. Some lace. Fruitiness in aroma and in the taste, perhaps too fruity, apple juice more describes the fruit. sweet, with caramel apple though drinkable. And at 8.5%, there's not too much other beer to have if you have a pint.

Originally reviewed on January 18, 2006. On tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear, clean ruby brown, with a thin off-white head. Light fruity malt aroma, with a hint of banana and cinnamon. Bland fruit malt and alcohol flavor. Effervescent. Alcohol drives this car. Some warm breadyness. Lemony sour finish.

Sampled at the Michigan Brewers Guild Summer Fest.
A: Dark brown, off-white head, great retention, some lace.
S: Bread, prune, slightly tart, slight candied fruit aroma.
T: Too pruney and tart. A little sulfur & cardboard. Nice malty bread though.
M: Moderate to full body, moderate carbonation.
D: Definitely not impressed.

On tap, ten ounce pour presented in a mug.
Rich amber hue, somewhat like tea. Thin tan coloured head.
Nose has some subdued fruit & a distinct spicy hoppiness.
Sweetish, with a good dose of caramel, and plenty of Munich malt. Understated apple sort of fruitiness. Well balanced by a spicy & earthily hopped off dry finish. Never cloying. Medium-full bodied. Moderate carbonation & incredibly smooth. A rather straight forward, but elegant & well executed doppelbock.

Arrived with a thing tan head over a ruby-brown body. Left no lace and had minimal head retention. Overall clean aroma; notes of roasted malt and a hint of hops. This beer really starts to deliver once it's in the mouth. Tart and sweet berry-like flavors combine with a generous dose of roaasted caramel and hints of chocolate malt. A slight hop bitterness in the background. Full-bodied with light carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel.
The alcohol is well-hidden and doesnt detract from the very complex and impressive malt profile. A delicious and warming brew.

Maybe this beer has changed over time or maybe I had a good night... this beer came to me a deep crimson color with rosy hues. Had a decent head but its shine was the most alluring. Smells of Munich malt, through and through, putting out a bushel of toasty, deeply fruity, and malty scents. Thoroughly doppelbock maltiness with little creative details - just straight up Munich, no chaser.
Taste is a meal of malt, a chewy mouthfull of bread and constrained fruitiness, never cloying or otherwise. Delicious soft-toasted finish with near perfect amount of balancing hops - they do their job and stay out of the way until the finish. Mouthfeel is smooth, round, and full, but sliding back with lager ease due to the moderately low carbonation. It just tastes like German kilned malts, plain and simple, large and in charge, with little roasted notes in its navigation of the style.
Damn good the weekend I had it. Better be good when I return this week!
Update: Yeah, I'm not crazy, this is a damn good doppel. Big, smooth, malty, and pleasing in every way.

Served with no head whatsoever and a bit too cold. As I let it warm up a bit, some mild alcohol-ish esters floated off the top of this surprisingly light brew. I could have sworn this was darker the last time I had it. Nonetheless, all the other characteristics were there, just as I remember them -- exceptional balance, easy drinking, very smooth. (Aaah. College.) Very slick texture. Almost fatty in a way. Roasted grain bitterness. 8.5% is very well hidden beneath the strong malt flavors. These would catch up with you in a big hurry.
