In restaurant pint glass.

Nice translucent glowing straw yellow. With a wee head. Also little lacing and head retention, but a great looking brew.

The nose is super nice. Big bubblegum with less banana and cloves than usual in hefe. Very fruity almost like fruit-stripe gum!

The flavor fruity and full bodied. A lot of the times I choose other breweries downtown in Indianapolis, but I am never sorry for choosing Ram.

A farirly standard yet formitable American brewed wheat beer, but lacking the depth of character and balance to compete with authentic German Hefeweizens.

The standard hazy pale straw hue is met with a froathy and airy foam stance that shows good sturdiness early, but I wanted better retention and lace later.

Citrus focused, the beer seems to take on the lemony esters that combine with fresh grassy-hop elements and a grainy/sweet flavor that represents both wheat and barley well. Rounded complexities of tropical bananas, appricots; or spicy clove and orange peel are secondary- all giving the nod to the grainy acidic flavors. This balance allows for clean and crisp finish but sacrfices the richness of early taste through mid palate. With really no flaws other than balance, this beer is easily drinkable and shouldn't offend any appreciators of wheat beers.

Overall the beer falls a little banal and lacking in character in comparison to true German style wheats. Where it really does nothing detrimental, the ceiling on this beer is gagued quite low.

Tap poured into glass pint.

$4.13 / ea.

S: Pretty solid scent. Definitely has the banana and clove flavor that the description boasts. Wheat also abundant.

A: No head, no lacing, no cover. Cloudy stray body. Looks a bit like unfiltered ice tea. Not impressive.

T: Typical wheat beer. It was described to me as being like Blue Moon, but other than being a wheat beer I really didn't see the resemblance. Banana and clove dominate over a weak wheat flavor.

M: Very light body, and high carbonation. The bubbles really bite at the tip of the tongue. Very dry finish. Crisp. I prefer lower carbonation.

D: The taste is decent, if not great, but the carbonation really wears on me. I don't think I could enjoy more than two.

O: Not bad, but definitely tastes like a chain beer. Nothing special about it.

The Ram's hefeweizen had nice coloring, a golden, wheat-like appearance, with good swirls going through. It also had a nice crisp aroma, with a slightly citrus-like scent. The taste itself was good, but nothing wonderful. It goes down smooth, a nice sweet, thirst quenching wheat beer, but very little extra in overtones. Worth a try, but probably not two.

Update: wonderful beer! Great banana and clove aromas and tastes; goes down wonderfully smooth; much improved and awesome!

Not your typical hefe, but tasty and drinkable. Overall, I found more hops flavor and sweetness. The traditional German malt flavors were absent, replaced by more sweet fruit flavors, herbal and citrus hops finished out the flavor in what makes for a good session beer. I'd call this a nice twist on the traditional hefe, worth trying.

Cloudy and decidedly golden yellow in color. Almost no head on this one, though that may have been the fault of whomever drew it. The nose lacks all but a bit of the banana that one expects in a hefeweizen, but that's not inappropriate for BA's categorization of this as American pale wheat ale. The nose is thick and malty with some honey sweetness. The taste of this in no way invokes a hefeweizen beyond its being malt-forward, but again its not wholly out of line as an American pale wheat ale. Sweet from start to finish with but a smidge of spice and citrus. The taste and the mouthfeel both invoked something heavier than this is meant to be--something more like an amber. I guzzled this one down quickly (i.e., it's quite drinkable), but it pains me to see the hefeweizen label attached to it.

Poured with a decent head after letting warm up a bit from being in a cold fridge. First couple of pours showed a slight head and all managed to vanish rather quickly. A nice Brussels Lace was left when the beer is served at a respectable temperature. Cloudy as expected with a pale, golden tinge.

Slightly off a little on the banana-clove anticipation but received a faint whiff every now and then.

Taste was satisfying with a bit more clove than banana. Not served with any fruit. I enjoy the beer for what it is and do not totally understand drinking a "Reinheitsgebot" beverage with orange slice. Of course this is not exactly the middle of summer either.

Did not notice a lot here but am going with slightly above average. Again nothing off and worked well throughout the palate. Maybe I should reconsider that orange.

Would definitely drink this at the Ram in the Spring or Summer. Need to stay downtown or find a designated driver as drinking more than one would probably be a certainty.

Just read another review and will add lemon to orange references.

I stopped by the Ram while in Indianapolis for a convention. I’m glad I did.

The RAM claims proudly that they don’t need no stinkin’ lemon for this wheat, and I agree. The Big Horn Hefeweizen, which leans more towards the banana than the clove, is a great interpretation of the style, though not necessarily traditional.

Honey golden and near opaque, this beer pours with a thick (~ ¾ inch) but unfortunately quickly fading head. The smell coming off of this beer were quite stunning – very strong banana esters with plenty of honey sweetness.

The sweet honey banana taste promised by the smell was delivered in spades, especially in the aftertaste – but somehow managed to not become overpowering. Light clove and vanilla flavors brought up the front. A slight vodka flavor was consistent over the entire experience. The effervescence was spot on, making this beer totally refreshing and an absolute pleasure to drink.

A good beer, if you don’t mind a sweet brew every now and again. Just don’t ask for lemon.
