The John A Lau Saloon is about the only place left in struggling Alpena to get a micro-brew now that Fletcher Street Brewing has closed.

Located right downtown on 2nd st in a great ( supposedly haunted ) old building.Nice dark, woody atmosphere.

6 taps of micros, 2 Bells, 2 Arcadia, Motor City Pale, and a tap of Founders. Not a great selection by any means, but the best in town.

Food is very solid, service is fine.

If you are in Alpena this is your best bet for a good meal with at least a decent brew.

Stumbled across this place waiting for fletcher street to open at 4 PM. Loved the interior, old and classy, first bar is on left as you enter and has small barrels supporting the draft beer faucets, nice. The feel is of an old hotel, 2 bars, an upstairs, and a really neat side room for banquets and such. The walls are covered with beer signs, animal heads and other vintage items. Draft selections included Bells and Motor City selections and some imports. Some of the brands were renamed for this establishment. 22 bottles and that included some of the Fletcher Street Selections. Food was good, pricey, I had a wrap. A nice place to tilt a few quality beers when you are waiting for Fletcher Street to open.
