The wife and I stopped in here on our recent European trip. After trying all the big Kolsch breweries in the city center, this was our favorite for the beer. It also ranked pretty high on atmosphere. We sat inside near a window, which had stained glass decorations, that was in view of one of the Dom's bell tower spires. The service was decent and the food was okay. But the beer by far is the reason to come here. I honestly believe it's the best in Koln.

(The selection for obvious reasons is poor here - but honestly, why would you come here to drink anything but Kolsch?!)

Stop in here if you're in the city and thirsty - also it's not far at all from the train station so you could hop in if you have a few hours while just passing through.

Made it here on the Saturday evening of Karneval in November 2023, one of the few places that while crowded, was actually accessible. The bartender was nice enough to let me have several glasses by the bar since everywhere else was full. There was live music outside in the plaza with an outdoor bar. Inside was rocking, as well, and I was one of the few people not wearing a costume. Kölsch is pretty standard, although a bit sharper and drier than other versions in the city. €9.20 for four 0.2l pours, not bad in late 2023 during a big festival. Certainly not the best in Köln but does the trick.

Brauerei Früh am Dom is just south of the cathedral to the east of the fancier part of Hohe Straße, which is the main shopping street in Köln. There are many others spreading far to the west, but this one is in the heart of the innenstadt and leads directly to the cathedral, and the closer you are the more expensive the shops seem to get. But forget that, my only point in saying this is that it can be a very busy place (well, actually, maybe I'm saying that Fr¨h am Dom is a little bit pricey as well.) That's not to say that Gaffel am Dom, which is even closer to the cathedral isn't busy, because it is, it's even attached to the bahnhof station, but Früh gets very busy due to their outdoor seating.

Inside it's quite nice, and has the charming old-wood and Disneyesque feel of 'past centuries Deutschland'. (You have to pay to use the toilet though, even as a customer, which pisses me off!). Even if the weather is great, I'd suggest you sit inside unless you're a smoker so you can soak up the atmosphere and enjoy your beer and food completely. There are several sections that look completely different, and if that's important to you I'd suggest you look at their website and decide what interests you. Keep in mind, however, that you'll need reservations apart from slow times and you'll have to take what you're given. They're open from 11 am to midnight Monday-Friday, and Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to midnight. In nice weather the outdoor areas, or "biergarten" as they call it, will be packed.

There's only one beer so there's no need to talk about that. The food is of the same quality and preparation that you'll find elsewhere, and just slightly expensive given that you're in a northern city of some size. I feel there are some Kölsch houses that offer better food (and beer) at slightly lower prices but I'll withhold any suggestions and instead recommend that you try them all. If that's not possible, however, I'll also note that given just one night in Köln I would personally not dine at Früh.

Here's a short list of some of the offering available during my last visit:
Hearty goulash soup with bell pepper, potato and rye bread roll - €5,90
Pickled herring in cream sauce with boiled potatoes - €9,90
Large mixed salad w/ baked Dutch cheese, tomato, hard boiled egg, rye roll - €10,90
Beef tartare with egg-yolk, rye bread roll, brown bread and butter - €12,90
Boiled knuckle of pork with sauerkraut and homemade mashed potatoes - €14,80
Viennese schnitzel served with French fries and mixed salad - €22,90
••••••• as a side note, one way to determine the height of the prices is to chose one item such as the Wiener Schnitzel and keep that in mind as a comparison with each place that you visit. In example, the same Wiener Schnitzel at Gaffel am Dom is just €15,60 which is €7 higher.

As for service, that very much depends on the server that you get, and I'll say that applies everywhere in Köln. I've certainly experienced the disregard that foreigners can experience, but this is a big city and the servers (many who are not German) know that as Americans you're not going to sit and tie up a table all night so they'll try to move you along. Some are even very caring, friendly, and funny although I will note that I haven't experienced quite that at Früh, just the attentive part.

I think this place gets a bit of a bad rap for being touristy, I'm sure it is a nightmare at certain times, but we were there on a relatively slow Tuesday evening and it was great. The building itself is very cool, multiple underground levels in old cellars, you can sit at the bar and watch them hoist a new barrel into place and tap it every 20 min or so. Service was good and the kolsch was our favorite or the three breweries we made it to in the city.

Fruh is a tourist trap mixed with a sports bar.

The Kölsch isn't great but there is a decent vibe in there if you like being around other tourists. The food is "meh" and your better off walking another couple blocks to get an overall significantly better experience.

Go to say you did, but don't have high expectations.

The beer was average with not a very good selection and the place was packed with a very young and pushy crowd. They had a Kolsch that was actually pretty good and the place is located near some decent shops and a quaint area, so it was a mixed bag.

Whilst in a very touristy location this is still quite a nice Kölsch bar. Service was extremely attentive and after giving the impression that we may not have actually been tourists but locals it became even better and from our calculations we paid the locals’ Kölsch price and not the inflated tourists’ price. The Kölsch is nice and the decor is too however if you want to escape tourists I would look elsewhere.

Better to have a late lunch than none at all. Fruh am Dom has a very large biergarten in the front, but on a sunny and warm Saturday, all the seats were taken. No problem, we'll just head inside and sit at one of the wooden tables. It's roomy inside, and high ceiling also give that inpression.

Right off the bat, we were given a 200 ml of Fruh Kolsch. Don't expect to find any other beer, as it's the only beer served. Like in Dusseldorf, at Cologne's kolsch houses you are given small glasses of the house beer and are automatically served another one as your glass runs dry until you tell them to stop. Later on we decided on our lunch. I helped myself to a very large serving of boiled pork kunckle, which was so big it could have fed two people. Eike was really enjoying his asparagus soup and nibbling off of Daniella's entree.

One of many good spot in Cologne to hit for a beer in a good atmosphere. Oh yeah, the house beer is pretty good too.

Service is not bad, it's just always busy. Try to get a table on the ground floor if you can as the atmosphere is better. I find lunch to be more fun than dinner. The Fruh is always fresh and flowing - be sure to "abuse" your Cubis as local tradition dictates. Basically, be rude to the waiter in jest as that is the expectation - sometimes they dish out better than they get :-)

The steak tartar is nice and the cheese selections are very nice. There's a lot of traditional German food on the menu. I also reccommend getting a cask for the table if you group is a little bigger - or just thirstier as this is fun to tap the keg, a lot faster for refills, and just fresh as the day is long.

I think this must be most BA's first stop on a Kolsch tour, as this so close to the Hauptbahnhof.

We visited in Summer, so most of the drinkers were outside on the terrace soaking up the sun.

It was the day of the 3rd place play off in the World Cup - Germany vs Uruguay, so atmosphere was light hearted and football focussed!

Service was excellent, very Kobe-like, not much chat, just taking the order and bringing it out.

The kolsch is certainly fresh and of good quality from the wood.

I had the Halven Hahn - A slab of gouda cheese, butter, and a rye roll, with mustard - the classic Koln snack! My drinking buddy had the 3 spiegeleir mit speck, bratkartoffeln und salad. It didnt stand a chance.

Selection is of course Fruh Kolsch, but thats expected, its their pub!

Value is more pricey since close to the Hbf.

Overall, a very enjoyable visit!

I stopped here while traveling throughout Europe. I love Kolsch beer and was reccomended this place by many Germans. This place had great location, beer, and good service.

As stated before the proximity to the cathedral is nice and it is a must visit for anyone going by or to Cologne. The inside has a nice feeling as it was crowded with both the townspeople and tourists. The service was a tad slow but I realize it was because it was so busy. The only thing I remember about their food was it was larger portions. I do remember the Kolsch was excellent. This place was big with a nice authentic feel. It was somewhat pricey, but well worth it.

A classic just around the corner from the Catherdral and a five minute walk from the train station. Back in the fall of '97 I ate a nice wild game meal (boar?) and in 2007 stopped by quickly while on business.

One of several world classic pubs in Cologne and Dusseldorf, very different than Munich and the south. Kolsch beer is easy to drink for any beer drinker. Unique beer, glasses (.2 L) and waiters (called Kobes).

Huge place, packed with people, not too touristy but a little more expensive b/c of proximity to station and cathedral.

This is a must visit place when in Kolin.

There was indoor an outdoor seating, we chose outdoor. The place was packed but we managed to immediately find a seat. We ended up sharing the large table with some nice business men.

The service was brisk, which I did not expect. The customary .2 Liter glasses were used. With the quick execution of marking my coaster and constant replenishment of beer this seems to be the way to go. The Kolsch was wonderful. I have never had such a fresh Kolsh that was so well done. Of course, you only had that (and I believe and Paulaner wheat bier) to choose from...soo you better like it.

The food was simply prepared and wonderful. We had some light apps consisting of freash vegtables and cheese. Well done to say the least.

Overall, this was a great place to spend any length of time. You can not go wrong here.

I arrived late one Sunday morning and didn't leave until that evening...

Fantastic atmosphere; very traditional brauhaus that seems like it hasn't changed since its opening. Despite its location just next to the Dom, the place was packed with locals; only a few tourists to be seen.

The service was excellent; the köbes were always there with fresh glasses and were quite friendly. I was drinking with a few regulars though, so this could have been exceptional.

As with any brauhaus in Köln, the selection was limited; hard to fault them on this.

Definitely my favorite place to have a kölsch in Köln.

We had a wonderful time here on our last night in Cologne after a month. It was hunting-game season so they had all of the seasonal meats available, as well (Nov-Jan if I recall?).

The ambience is very much authentic. They have a good number of dining-rooms, and the restrooms are downstairs but worth the trip down the lovely staircase whether you need to use them, or not!

Waiting for a table during pre-Christmastook some time. Service was impeccable overall, however.

Beers are of course outstanding-- one of the top Kolsch's of Cologne. There's also a gift-shop next door, which sells various gift-packs of their Fruh beer and many other items.

If you can't find the place readily, go to Starbucks and look across the walkway ;-)

My favorite incident here was when I was puzzled by one of the seasonal-game items on the menu. I thought I'd tried all of them during the month, but I'd never seen this one, so I ordered it. When I was served, I asked the server (who spoke very little English) what it was. He thought, he paused, then he laughed and said, "BAMBI!" Yes it turned out to be baby-deer!

It was a foregone conclusion that we were going to visit this place!

Its a massive establishment, that seems to be very well run. As soon as you walk in the door, there is a area where the Kolsch is poured from the barrels. This is good fun to watch (tapping, and special lift for the barrels) and you can buy your beer there and then standing up. It's a bit of a tourist attraction, but an understandable one that is done well by Fruh.

The beer is very solid (fruity style of Kolsch), and the building is quite nice, and a bit windy/confusing with all the different rooms / restaurant areas.

The beer was a little expensive compared to other Koln pubs/breweries at Euro 1.55 for 0.2cl. Next door there is a shop that has some nice Fruh souvenirs amongst other things - I picked up a pair of cufflinks shaped like Fruh bottle caps.

After a pretty intense session in Antwerp, I was ready for something a bit lighter, so off we went to Köln. It was a Sunday, so pretty much everything outside of the touristy center around the Dom was closed. No matter, I wanted to to check this place out.

As you enter, the Kolsch barrel awaits you sitting on it's stand, a Köbes standing by for another to show up with his empty crown to fill. 3 Floors with different ambiances, we went for the non-smoking section on the ground floor, which had nice naval inspired paintings, hop vines on the walls and an open view to the fountain and street outside that was filled with people enjoying a cold one in the fair weather. Going downstairs you get to see the Bierkeller, the souvenir stand that sells everything from T-shirts to keg stands and even the actual faucets they use for the kegs. Keep going down and you'll find the refrigereated room where they keep the kegs extra-fricken cold.

Our waiter was exactly what we expected from a Köbes, not a very chatty guy - he didn't speak english anyway - but efficient and to the point, so in no time I had a stange filled with the local brew. I certainly did enjoy it, in fact my first one I downed almost immediately, but it wasn't my favorite in town. Obviously, selection is pretty limited, however my girlfriend did get a glass of wine, although a pretty generic one.

We were there for a quick snack only, our food was good, fairly large portions and well presented.

You could tell that this is the Kolsch house most frequented by the tourists, it's litterally a stone's throw from the Dom so prices are higher than everywhere else. But it's still well worth checking out, and the Beer is good.

I stopped here while in Cologne on business in early 2006. I heard this was a definitive Kolsch experience. Prior to this, the only Kolsch I'd had was from Goose Island in Chicago...

Kolsch beer is kind of like a pilsner to me. A light easy-drinking session beer. That said, this place served it charmingly, in 0.2L glasses which streamed endlessly to the table. The atmosphere was really cool, old-world looking and close to the "dom" (a huge Gothic church in downtown Cologne). Another patron puked at the table next to us, which was gross. But I guess I can't knock the establishment's atmosphere for that.

The food was awesome, I had what appeared to be at least 1/3 of a pig's leg roasted to perfection. I love beer and meat, they go well together. Very nice meal.

If you're in Cologne, I hear this is the place to be.

Well, it's tough to say that this place has a good selection, but WOW, what a beer it has. I remember whiling away many fine afternoons at the Brauerei Frueh Am Dom. Mmmmm, Koelsch tastes so freakin' good fresh and it goes so well with a Halve Hahn or, if you are more adventurous, Met. Mmmmm, Met.

The atmosphere is spot-on Koelsch. Your spine of Koelsch will be delivered by a pumpkin, and you are in view of both the Cathedral as well as the fountain that tells the story of the Gnomes that used to do all the chores for Koelner. However, one day a woman wanted to see what was going on, and saw the Gnomes at work, so they disappeared forever.

So much atmosphere, and there really and truly is nothing better than a freshly tapped Frueh from the brewery.

This place can be a bit difficult to find, though is only a couple of minutes from the Cathedral, on Am Hof...but as many streets are not named, tricky to find because of being in a narrow corner.

Huge place with 3 floors of eating and drinking rooms, including the hotel building to the left. Being almost in the Cathedral square it is very touristy, but still very well worth visiting. The many rooms are the usual dark wooden panels, sanded tables, chairs and benches, and beer garden at the front.

Best place to eat and drink however is the below ground Beer Keller, down stairs from the ground floor, though it does not open until 12 mid-day. Huge cellar area with mezzanine floors and hidden rooms like a labyrinth! Bar area where the beer is served, and the outer walls all brick. Fascinating to explore and great atmosphere.

Mid-day easy to get a table and seat as there seem to be hundreds of tables, but in the evening it fills very quickly and it can be hard to find a seat, which we could not believe after seeing it almost empty at mid-day.

Service was good...even when very busy in the evening. Food menu is comprehensive, and you can ask for an English Menu. The food we had was very good and we did not have to wait long, and reasonable price considering its position in the centre of Cologne.

The Fruh Kolsch is a little drier and more 'hoppy' than some and very good, refreshing, clean and easy to drink.

Highly recommended, even if it seems a tourist trap, and if the outside beer garden is packed, then go inside and explore until you find somethere to sit ! There is a second floor and also in the Hotel area, but those are more for eating than just drinking alone.

Again...be prepared to pay to use the rest rooms as is common in German bars and cafes! There are no 'non smoking' areas that we could see.

A huge bar with plenty of rooms, each of them having a specific name. Waiters wearing a traditional blue uniform don’t seem to care about customers entering the bar, and you just have to grab a seat wherever you want. The rooms are pretty much all identical, so I ended up chosing the one that was the least crowded. The atmosphere isn’t too touristy with many locals frequenting the place. It’s quite loud, and a bit cold, due to the size of the whole thing. Service was quite cold too, as it seems to be the rule here. I went there twice and got the same service both times: fast but very impersonal, almost aggressive. I went back because of the beer, which I appreciated very much. The small size of the glasses makes you more dependent on the waiter though, but it guarantees a great beer during the whole session. Prices are decent, maybe a bit more expensive than in some other places in the city, but not outrageous. Of course, you can lament the fact that they’re only offering their one beer, but that’s how it goes in Köln. The food I got was standard German bar grub and cafeteria-like.
A place that deserves at least one visit. And the patio is probably great in the summer.

What an amazing place. As I stepped into this brewery I actually thought the place was closed because of its sheer size. There are rooms upon rooms, floors upon floors and all for the enjoyment of some great Kolsch. The walls were all done in brick, but I took me two flights downstairs to finally hit up one of the many bars they had. The beer was outstanding, a great example of a refreshing Kolsch, while the service was easily above par. The bartender answered all my questions and even showed me multiple areas of the brewery. The food was par, but the beer was why I was there. A must stop for anyone who is in Cologne.

Well its a nice north german environment to have a kolsch and have some schwein. The Fruh beer haus is located just off the Dom- Köln's world famous cathedral, and within its old germanic house exterior holds a bierhall like environment of abundance, feast, and, of course, beer.

Though the only beers going around are 20Cl glasses of Früh Kölsch and 33Cl bottles of Früh Alkoholfrei. Poor selection but, then again, it is the Früh place, why should they offer anything else?

Service is festive and proper, although not speaking good german gets you into a bit of trouble.

The food is particularly excellent. Typical german dishes, both rhine and bavarian, are excellent quality and tasty, plus a beer companion makes them ever better. Worth coming, sure. for dinner, very festive.

The bar is located literarly in the shadow of the Dom and therefore very frequented by tourists. One may not have the most authentic Köln brewpub experience (its too new, touristy, and they no longer brew there) but its a good time all the same.

Früh am Dom has an awesome atmosphere. This place especially shines in the summer when the establishment operates roughly 200 seats outside in the night lights and hustle-bustle of the Dom. Perfect for people watching and relaxing conversation. In the winter the operation moves entirely indoors where the restaurant is decorated in 'traditional' Kölner motifs. Lots of wood, lots of beer barrels, and the like fill the room. The restaurant is extremely clean.

Service was less than stellar the two times I was there. The first time it took roughly 25 minutes before a waiter approached us while we were sitting (to boot they were by no means busy). The second was better but service was very uncordial, more than simply professional. I did not feel particularly welcome, but I am comparing this place's hospitality compared to other brewpubs more frequented by locals.

Früh serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They actually serve fried eggs for breakfast!!! Breakfast begins at 830 (i think) but beer isnt served til 10. My breakfast was delicious, large, and suprisingly cheap. My lunch was less than spectacular but lunch was just starting to end. Nothing to complain about, but nothing to rant on about either.

Früh is a good choice if your only passing through the city. There are better places out there but no so easy to find. One can grab an enjoyable lunch, few beers, and see the Dom in an afternoon. Due to this convenience and quality of their beer I reccommend Früh for a passing-by tourist.
