A- Poured a dark semi-hazy orange color with off-white ring of head and no lace

S- Some big citrusy hops, big caramel sweetness, some piney notes

T- Lots of juicy citrus notes, piney hops, lots of caramel sweetness. Lots of bitterness on the finish, balancing out a big sweetness from the malt and hop juiciness

M- Very dry, prickly carbonation, medium body, really smooth

O- Really solid DIPA with lots of malt sweetness and hop bitterness. Nice pungent hop character.

On tap at Ninkasi, poured into a pint glass.

A-Pours a burnt orange somewhat hazy, a finger of foamy white head.

S-Smells strongly of hops and sweet resin, some floral and citrus notes.

T-Strong hoppy bitterness, resin sweetness. Taste follows nose as there is also some light citrus and floral notes.

M-Medium to full body, lightly carbonated.

O-Very delicious DIPA, it strikes a good balance of hoppy bitter, sweetness and zest.

This poured a dark orange color with a fluffy white head. Floral, perfumed hops swirl from the glass. This is definitely more on the citrus/crisp side of IPA. It lacks some of the depth I would look for in a double, but is pure & quite representative of the west coast style. Medium mouthfeel & quite clean & fresh on the palate.

big thanks to blackcloud for this awesome extra. consumed from a SN ipa glass.

a - brew poured the classic ipa transparent orange with a big foamy white/off-white head that hung out and left massive chunky lacing. the nucleation on the bottom of the glass really made the carbonation jump from the bottom of the glass. looks great.

s - crisp and clean, almost soapy pine. floral, citric and in general appeasing and nice. not too intense, fairly balanced by the malt, but the hop is the superstar.

t - yum. very tasty. much like the nose, a nice floral fruity hop, but rather balanced with the malt. bouquet of flowers, citric, oranges...with a tad of bitterness of the finish, but hardly so. soft caramel notes in the background.

m - soft and easy drinking finish has subtle bitterness, but mostly fruity and floral.

o - overall, this is a really nice ipa. it was surprising to be a west coast ipa with so much malt presence to balance out the hop. not sure if this is old, but the balance is really nice for west coast. paint me impressed.

Appearance - Pours a hazy sunset orange with an off-white, finger width head. Fair retention. Lacing runs from streaky to spotty, with good stick.

Smell - A fair balance in the aroma, bringing a moderate amount of orange citrus and lesser tropical and floral hop notes, with a touch of resin and spice. Malts come through well with bread and a touch of caramel sweetness.

Taste - Hops are more prevalent on the tongue than on the nose, though still relatively balanced by the solid malt backbone. Strong orange character upfront and throughout, more juicy to begin, then fades to a strong pith bitterness. Bready malts provide strong support to the hop assault, coming through with an ever-present quality. Touches on pine and a slight black pepper bite. Finishes with citrus pith/skin bitterness that ranges from orange to grapefruit with long, lingering effects.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full body with moderate, soft carbonation. Smooth, somewhat creamy before a dry finish.

Overall - Strong offering from Ninkasi. I'm a bit perplexed by the name though: a double (not triple) IPA, with 4 hops used in the brewing process... where does 'Tri'cerahops come from? Oh well. Solid brew. Classic West Coast IPA character. Nice balance for a 100 IBU brew.

This brewery's been getting a lot of hype in BC. Everywhere I turn, I see NINKASI. I go to Facebook, I see NINKASI being hyped by the distributor. I go to Brewery Creek, I see NINKASI beer in the staff recommendations list. They have NINKASI tap takeovers. Obviously, this brewery has something to prove. I avoided them in the past on account of a friend (hello largoderr) saying he wasn't too impressed with their stuff. He's generally someone whose taste I trust, but at the same time, I couldn't take all the hype anymore. I had to try one of their beers. I was in the mood for some goddamn IPA this evening, so I got a bottle of this, a bottle of Tofino Brewing Hoppin' Cretin and a sixpack of Lagunitas Sucks from Brewery Creek. When I asked the cashier about this beer, he told me that if I liked being punched in the mouth with hops, I would definitely enjoy this. Welp, seeing as my favorite pastime is being abused, assaulted and being held hostage by hops, I assumed this beer would deliver. Sigh. One of these days I'm going to have to stop being so trusting of people.

Where to start with this beer? I guess I'll start by saying that I had a couple of the Lagunitas Sucks bottles first, because I knew they were pretty goddamn amazing (and they were), and then I had the Tofino Brewing Hoppin' Cretin because it was a single IPA so I figured I should have that before having the TRICERAHOPS, because the TRICERAHOPS was a double IPA, you see. Thus, it contained, like, DOUBLE the amount of palate-wrecking hops contained in a meager bomber of Hoppin' Cretin.

Sadly, this beer is completely underwhelming. It pours ok. I guess I'm really bad at gauging a beer's quality by its color (and really, I hardly understand the point of a rating based upon it), but it poured a pretty nice cloudy amber. It smelled... not like a double IPA would smell. The hops were fairly anemic and kinda generic, in the way "wet grass" would smell. The malts were very noticeable in the smell, as well, which is never a great sign in a supposed "hop bomb" double IPA.

The taste was just... bland. Generally, when I have a double IPA, I expect to be smacked down by the hops. It's not masochism on my part, I've just come to expect it from the style. This beer's hop profile could barely compare to the Hoppin' Cretin single IPA I had prior to it. You could definitely tell you were drinking an IPA, but you'd be hard-pressed to pinpoint any exact flavors or aromas. When your double IPA fails to overpower or, hell, even stack up to a single IPA, you have some issues on your hands.

Initial mouthfeel isn't bad. Good carbonation, decent crispness from the hops, but then the malt just overpowers everything else. This sort of malt backing would be ideal to an overpowered, 11% IPA with an obscene amount of hops (like Hop Henge, maybe). In this beer, though, it just overpowers everything and just makes it kinda sweet and slightly cloying.

Maybe I didn't have the freshest bottle. I wouldn't know, since NINKASI (HYPE HYPE HYPE) doesn't date their bottles. I've been running into this problem quite often recently. Breweries, seriously, how about you start dating your goddamn IPAs? Regardless, I'm pretty sure I'd have many of the same qualms with it even fresh. At 8.8% ABV, I can't see the hop profile balancing out the huge malt body this beer has.

Overall, I think this is proof that hyping a beer to hell and back works. 91 rating on BA? Seriously? There are way better examples of double IPAs in Oregon, Washington, and, hell, even in BC, Canada. They don't have an awesome hype campaign like this brewery, though, so they're nowhere near as well known.

HYPE IS AWESOME NINKASI HYPE HYPE BEST BEER (if you like things that suck)

Had no idea what Ninkasi was a few months ago. Now it's in every single beer shop in this town. Let's see what the buzz is.

A: Pours a fairly hazy beaten copper, with only about a finger off white head. Retention is subdued, lacing is minimal. Ah, the nature of the high octane D/TIPA. Carbonation is fairly vigorous, with tiny bubbles fighting through the ethanol to form the head.

S: Big hop scent. Lot of leafiness, pine and orange pulp. Pineapple notes in there as well, but more subdued. Bit of alcohol heat accentuates the malt sweetness, giving it characteristics of caramel and vanilla. Lot of mulled grain and bread in the nose. The malt bill must be massive.

T: Begins with a huge malt sweetness that borders cloying. Hops comes in with notes of pine, leafiness/woodiness, and a splash of tropical fruit. Finish is oily and resinous bitterness with a bit of the alcohol heat coming through as sweetness.

M: Pretty massive considering the relatively moderate (for a DIPA) abv. Perhaps a bit over the top, with some flabbiness.

O: A good, very bitter DIPA. However, the underlying sweetness of the malt/alcohol is poorly hidden and the mouthfeel is a bit unctuous.

M:crisp and wet leaves my mouth watering

O:a nice beer verry smooth for a dipa not as hoppy as I wanted but preaty good

Mine didn't actually much of a head to speak of, and didn't leave any lacing either. Possibly my sinuses here, but not a lot in the way of an aroma either. Smelled tangy hops and a light biscuit aroma. I really enjoyed the taste of this beer though. I've been drinking a lot of the more fruity/citrusy IPA's lately, and it was nice to drink something with a more buscuity/bready malt profile. The hops were still tangy, and I enjoyed the bitterness of it all. Overall, considering it's availability in my area and relatively low price, I would definitely drink it again... and again.

A: Golden-bronze with an off-white head, light retention & initial lace.

S: Not a huge aroma for a DIPA, but it's nice: pine, mango, citrus, sponge toffee...

T: Nice piny resin, assertive bitterness, but not all harsh. Mango, nectarine, apricot, sponge toffee, hint of biscuit. Alcohol is subtle.

M: Well-attenuated, moderate body has a light hop acidity with a crisp finish.

O: Certainly hop-accented, but not at all unbalanced. Incredibly drinkable for a brew of this strength.

Pretty average ipa across the board. Pourz a nice clean amber. Smells super hoppy, pine and citrus. Flavor is a little unbalanced and slightly bitter. Resiny hops coat your mouth. Nothing spectacular but a solid ipa. However, out of all the "hop" pun beer names, Tricerahops is probably my favorite.

A: Pours a clear amber color with one finger off-white head, very nice head retention with sheets of lacing down the glass.

S: Nice piney aroma upfront with some lighter citrus underneath, a bit of grapefruit and orange. A bit of caramel.

T: Nice combination of citrus/pine and caramel malt.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: Enjoyable, not amazing, but easy drinking with a nice flavor profile.

Pours hazy gold orange color with a 2 finger foamy/creamy beige head that faded slowly and left foamy good lacing as it went down, leaving a ring around the top.

Smells of oranges, grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, citrus hops, caramel, biscuit, sweet malt, and floral hops; pretty much all citrus in the nose, with some herbs, grains and piney notes adding balance, but boy was this nice to inhale and what I had hoped for with those Pacific Northwest hops in play.

Tastes like it smells, only better, with juicy oranges, grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, citrus hops, guava, caramel, malt, brown sugar, piney hops, lightly roasted grains, tea leaf, herbs, floral hops, flowers like a rose petal, wet wheat bread and some boozy sweetness that seems like a wet hop was dropped in the glass for good measure. Considering how hoppy this is, the bitterness is mild and the malts/grains add nice balance and make this very easy to drink, hiding the ABV with juicy fruit and herbals notes. The spices don’t play any role in the flavor palate, which surprised me, but I still really dig this flavor.

Mouthfeel is creamy, slick and very smooth, with mild carbonation, a medium body that’s almost chewy and slightly bitter finish that’s full of sweet citrus fruit and goes down easy. This was freakin’ easy to drink, and I downed the bomber faster than I should have because it was so tasty.

After being disappointed by the Sleigh'r Dark Doüble Alt Ale, Ninkasi exceeded my expectations with this DIPA, which was easy to drink and extremely flavorful. I suggest East Coast hopheads go to ‘Let’s Pour’ and order some as this was a very tasty brew.

Presentation: Very cool label and color scheme with the Ninkasi seal as the centerpiece. Give a small description and small background about the beer on the side of the label.

Appearance: Poured out of a 22oz bomber into a 13oz tulip glass. Pours out a slightly hazy copper orange hue with an airy 2 finger white foam head of light density. Head initially fades quickly but slow considerably with head retention at 3min 30sec before finally settling to a thin foam coating and ring.

Smell/Aroma: Smells of very sweet citrus hops with grapefruit and orange being the prominent aromas. Hints of pineapple sweetness and a slightly floral hop scent can be detected as well. Smell is delicious and intoxicating!!!

Flavor/Taste: Tastes of citrus sweetness mixed with pine and floral hop bitterness all atop a bready malt backbone!!!! Extremely bitter on the back-end and aftertaste. Excellent!!

MouthFeel/Drinkability: Medium bodied with a medium carbonation but not overly filling. Very drinkable.

Overall/Comments: A very very good double IPA with a great smell and flavor profile. Above average to excellent across the board. Classified as a Double/Imperial IPA at 8.8% ABV. Consumed 12-4-12.

A bit dark for an IPA, but it's a double, so I'll cut it some slack. A dark peach color, maybe a dirty orange. Dark enough to be mostly opaque. Head is only around for a short bit, but it provides a decent lace.

A lot of stuff going on in the nose. A big fight between citrus and pine, and malt and bready yeast. Not a bad problem to have. Nothing dominates, though the citrus is the winner, as all scents are present.

If you're going to make a DIPA, it might as well taste like this...like someone soaked a grapefruit and a Christmas tree in a barrel of ale. Pacific Northwest flavors at their best.

Lots of grapefruit and pine, on a bed of bready goodness. Citrus and earthy. Acidic. Cleansing in that the IBUs shred your palate, but in a nice way. Almost sweet in the beginning, giving way to citric, before Dr. Jekyll takes over for a bitter finish. Crisp. Medium bodied.

I'm partial to Pacific Northwest IPAs and this is an example of why. It's a stellar beer. Overall, it's got a great taste and it's easy to drink despite wicked high hops and just as high ABV. But it's smooth and goes does a little too easy.

22 oz. bomber arrived in the mail. No date on the bottle. Get with the program, Ninkasi.

A: Clear, bright copper body. Not a ton of head, even with a fast pour. Retention and lacing are pretty decent.

S: That huge hop aroma that's normally present with IIPAs is hardly there. This suggests that the beer is at least a few months old. Smells of grapefruit juice and bread crust.

T: Decent hop bite for not being fresh. Well-balanced. Malt is taking over though at this point.

M: Mouthfeel is great for an 8.8% beer. Not very boozy. Good levels of carbonation.

O: Need to try this fresh, I can tell it's a great IIPA.

22oz bottle from LetsPour.com. No apparent bottling info. Served in a Red Brick snifter.

Pours pale hazy orange with three quarters of a finger pale head. Not much, but there is a bit of lace here and there.

Smells of citrusy grapefruit and orange hops with some sweet malts

Taste follows the nose. Pine, orange/ grapefruit peel, fresh cut grass, pepper, sweet bread, soft biscuit and a slight kick of booze. Flavors seem a little muted but nice overall.

Slick medium feel with fairly light carbonation. Long dry bitter finish with more citrus peel, pine and biscuit.

I'd remembered liking this a little more when a friend brought one back from Colorado last year but this is still pretty darn good. A nice (but a bit faint) blend of citrus and pine hops with a good sweet malt body. Perhaps not the brightest or boldest double IPAs but I'd not turn it down and it's certainly worth a shot if you come upon it.

The obvious complaint is that if it's a double IPA it should be called Biceratops, not Triceratops. Unless they're indicating that Tricerhops has three times as much hops as Ninkasi's standard pale ale which I would be ok with.

Hazy gold with a thin head. A thin veil of retention held on until about mid-glass and left a few speckles. Apathetic bottle art.

Pineapple and citrus with a little floral tilt. Sweet Twinkie malt immersed in it all. Smells spot on but doesn't exactly jump out of the bottle like a good DIPA should. Lazy dino.

The gusto picks up where the olfactories left off: floral citrus amid sweet, sugar cookie malt. Tastes really good but lacks the punch and bravado required of the style. Reserved bitter and not a whole lot of resin. Big creamy body is nice though.

I feel like I'm downgrading this beer because of the label - the style not the dinosaur reference. If this was labeled an IPA I'd be all about it but it lacks the strength of a DIPA. That said, I really like this beer. One of those that I like better than it reviews I guess. Hate the game, not the player.

I don't even know what to say, this is so good. I can't get this anywhere close to where I am, but my friend Mike brought a bomber back just recently. If I had to design an IPA, this would be exactly as it would be. Pours like they all do, but who cares, it's dark orange inviting, and more yellow that rust and tannic. Head, who cares! Smells yummy piney, floral and citrus hops, really makes me want to shove my head in the glass, good. If I could only 'jam on' my olfactory centers to continually perceive the hops: That good! Taste is clean malt, then citrus rind and more pine, and a hop echo that really can't be beat. This stuff has terrific after effects and outstanding balance. Mouthfeel is really good for a DIPA, and the alcohol lower, which I like, and the carbonation is moderate-low and fine and not overly syrupy in the delivery. If I were stinking wealthy, I'd hire a courier to bring this to my door. I'd have one every day. Astonishing.

Purchased in the Portland airport, post-security. Ninkasi bottles are not dated, but they seemed to be selling a lot of beer, so I took a chance on freshness.

The beer pours into my goblet, and briefly forms a light head of pure white. There is no haze or sediment, and the color is on the coppery side of straw.

What is it with the tropical fruit these days? It seems like my last several beers were devoid of citrus and pine. This is more of the trend. Very fruity, but no citrus.

Once in the mouth, this beer can't pretend to be anything but an IIPA. Heavy in body and slightly sweet, it still delivers a bitter kick in the end, and the alcohol is clearly present.

It's a pleasant beer, but I'm not sure I want to drink a whole bomber. I will, of course, but I'll probably regret it in the morning.

A- Pours a medium amber color with a 1/2 inch white head that doesn't retain long before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and random tufts of surface foam. Splotchy lacing.

S- Effervescent hop aroma that's citrusy and grassy. Notes of grapefruit, pine and some astringency from the alcohol

T- The hops sink their teeth in and then let go like they were almost never there. The bitterness is so abrupt but subtle. There's a splash of tropical fruit flavor like grapefruit, orange zest and lemon but it all quickly recedes leaving a dry finish with a modest lingering bite. Alcohol is nicely subdued.

M- Oily and crisp with medium carbonation and an average body.

O- I rarely find an IPA that can be this hoppy yet still be so balanced and restrained. Definitely the best I've had from Ninkasi thus far.

A:Golden Amber with Orange hue, nice 3 inch fluffy head with lacing.

S: Citrus notes with some passion fruit ripeness, grapefruit rind and a nice resinous hop character.

T: Nicely balanced between the ripe passion fruit and bittering hops on the back end. Finishes well, leaves a bit of a lingering bitterness. A bit of alcohol can be felt on the back end as well. The citrus and ripe malts come through well, but are balanced well by the very present hop character.

M: Medium body, light carbonation, a bit of sugar present but leaves a slight bitter linger.

D: Very nice, very smooth, well balanced, very much enjoyed.

A - Pours a hazy amber-orange color with a finger of frothy white head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of grapefruit, pine, floral, and grassy hops with some sweet caramel and biscuit malts.

T - Starts off with a mix of grapefruit and citrus hops with some bitterness and some sweet caramel malts. Through the middle, some pine, grassy, and floral hops come through with some more bitterness and some biscuit malts. The finish is a mix of pine, grapefruit, and grassy hops with some resiny bitterness and some sweet bready malts.

M - Medium-plus bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a dry, bitter, and lightly sweet finish.

D - Very drinkable. Nice hop profile and bitterness throughout with good overall balance.
