Sprecher Grapefruit Radler ale
4.5% ABV.
Look: Off white large head with cloudy dark yellow body. I can not see anything through the glass. There is a ton of carbonation all over the glass. There are actually bubbles clumping on the lower sides of the glass. The head went down to an inch after a while.
Smell: Grapefruit, wine, sourness, alcohol.
Taste: It's like a grapefruit cider with sourness, intense sweetness and lots of grapefruit.
Mouth: Light, but similar to other wheat beers
Overall: It really tastes like a hard grapefruit cider. Eventhough these people say this is an ale I can't classify as one. There are no flavor characteristics of a wheat beer, or beer in general. If you are looking for a grapefruity wheat beer this is not the one you want. It is too bad that they really came so short on this revolting beverage.

From the can, it pours a hazy amber with a luscious large head. Surprise! Fruity notes in the nose. Mild grapefruit taste in the mouth - not overly sour. Enjoyable!

Poured from the can into a wheat ale glass.

Cloudy and hazy murky mix of brown and yellow body color. Head is a good solid white, not bright, but a simple two fingers and even pinhead bubbles in its makeup. Settles to a half finger with no lacing. Pretty blazeh ….

How to describe this aroma that is to fill the void between a mix of soda and beer. Here we have a grapefruit quality that comes a little artificial if a bit zesty. Hints of sweet baby aspirin also abound. In fact that baby sweet aspiring character dominates like crazy. Ah memories, I am getting nostalgic, but for quality of simple brew… this is not getting it right. This is pretty much neutral in my feeling down the middle.

First sip and boy is this ever sweet. Take a piece of grapefruit and pour six cups of white sugar on it. Then drink it. That is the flavor coming off of this. Kool-aid flavors with a little better mouthfeel. Baby aspirin taste comes through nicely , if that's your thing.

Look a radler is not a crazy hard beer, but this tastes like some real screwed up concoction with the most medicinal sweet flavor created. A simple German produced Radler has no problem making this kind of thing, but even here they barely make this drinkable. Seriously.. Pass.

Pours a cloudy muddled yellow-orange body with a half finger of head.
No doubt this one has grapefruit! Plenty of grapefruit on the nose along with some tart fruit aromas.
Taste is what I would expect: Tart grapefruit up front with a smooth light body finish. Picking up on some cloves on the finish.
Light mouth feel, of course! Super easy to drink and a good thirst quencher on a hot day.
Overall, this was a pretty good beer, not something I would seek out again, but for the price it wasn't bad at all.

A thanks to the captain of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a cloudy, dark golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of grapefruit, sweet. Taste is grapefruit, a good bit of sweetness, refreshing. Feels medium/light bodied in the mouth and overall is a crushable summer beer.

This pours a hazy, yellowish color with a frothy white head. The aroma is mild with sweet & tart grapefruit aroma. The taste is more tart than I would have guessed from the aroma. This one I would have to be in the mood for since the grapefruit taste is so much stronger than compared to other brews.

I was scouring new arrivals at The Fridge recently when I stumbled across this CAN! The CANQuest (tm) has been on a Shandy/Radler bent of late & this will mark the last one for the foreseeable future. Shandy CANs are great, especially given the approach of summer, but at the same time, a bunch will go a long way.

From the CAN: "Milwaukee's Original Craft Brewery". Also, my approved pic does not do it justice, but the graphics really pop on this CAN! Buy one & see for yourself.

I heard a loud Crack! upon opening the CAN & I decided to celebrate with an inverted Glug. I love fresh beers that are wheat-based so that clarity is not even a CANsideration. The three-plus (!) fingers of dense, rocky, bone-white head puffed up like some sort of otherworldly soufflé before falling back into the glass, leaving lacing in its wake. Color was a cloudy Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7). Nose was light, but tart and perhaps the most authentic smelling shandy/radler to this point. I have drank & reviewed a number of them the past few days & some were very artificial. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was muted, but clearly grapefruit. I do not know if this occurred naturally or by design, but it made for a pleasant, quaffable drink. It was like Baby Bear's Radler - some (many) were too sweet, some were too artificial, this one was just right in terms of sweetness & authenticity. It had a good, easily identified grapefruit flavor without being overwhelming or in-your-face. That said, I am unsure that I would want a steady diet of any of them, even this one. The problem for me was that there is an inherent sweetness to the style and as a self-described/self-avowed hophead, it was not sustaining. The finish was dry without being overwhelmingly tart, but I was developing a sugary headache all the same. It is clearly time to take a shandy break.

Today is F, 31 March 2017. The Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody is really beginning to fall. It has required a concerted effort on my part, but headway is definitely being made. This is my fourth & last in a small horizontal of Sprecher's beers.

From the bottle: "Wheat Ale with Natural Grapefruit Flavor Added".

First off, it was yet another twisted twist-off cap, which generally inflames me. Second, I looked at both "Styles" on this site & the BJCP, but no mention is made of Radlers. I decided that since it is, at base, a wheat ale, that I would gently agitate it in the bottle & give it an aggro pour as clarity does not seem to be a concern. I have also become more proficient at my pour, allowing the head to slowly rise, rather than watching it rush up and holding my breath, hoping for the best. It still resulted in three fingers of foamy, rocky, eggshell-white head with modest retention, but at least I was not in panic mode as it formed. Nose smelled more like Ocean Spray Pink Grapefruit Drink & less like grapefruit juice. That is to say, it had a sugary sweetness that marred my anticipation of the drink. Color was a murky Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9). Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, but the carbonation gave it a lively spritziness on the tongue. The taste was not as bitter as I would like from anything involving grapefruit. Instead, it was on the sweet side & I wonder just how refreshing it would actually be on a hot, humid summer's day. That was the intent behind the drink's creation. Finish was semi-sweet, not really dry or bitter & I was left feeling unfulfilled.

A: Yellow orange i color, very hazy with a soft white head.

S: Grapefruit, with tangerine and orange peel. There is something herbal in the finish.

T: Sweet, with grapefruit, orange peel, and coriander. Definitely a lot sweeter than I would have thought, but the spice note in the finish gives it a nice herbal balance to it.

M: Medium, but there is a touch of a syrup feel. The carbonation is fine, and the finish is soft.

O: Overall pretty tasty, but a little too much soda sweetness for me.
