Poured straight from barrel at Defiant into a 10-oz glass. Served slightly cooler than room temp.
Even looking through a thin meniscus, light doesn't pass. Color through and through. Stains clothes, too! %^)
Nose is faintly reminiscent of root beer, with a bit of vanilla. Bits of coffee/cocoa, but refreshingly little (sometimes coffee flavors are too much like yesterday's coffee).
Hard to get here, but was worth the journey.

Poured from a growler poured at the brewery just a few hours later, and pulled from fridge about 30 minutes before serving.
Best way to describe this is as a no frills but still solid porter.
A: black with amber edges. Light brown Head was about an inch thick after pouring but disappeared rather quickly.
S: smell of cocoa and coffee was there but not strong and left a little to be desired
T: as with the smell, the taste could have used just a touch more of the coffee or cocoa one has come to desire in a porter. The level of hops and bitterness is what boosted the rating here. The level of bitterness in this particular beer is what I look for in a porter, noticeable and present but not overtaking the beer.
M: very smooth and the highlight of this beer.

This is not at all what I expected from a pretty decent rating.
While the color was right, there was absolutely no head what so ever. Granted, this could be due to glassware (or the fact it was obscenely hot and maybe that caused issues), but either way it was a let down.
Barely any aroma at all, but what was there was nearly reminecent of plastic.
If the aroma was any indication, the taste was exactly what I would image very fine granular plastic to taste like (chalky plastic). Mix in some dark roasted malt, a slight chocolate flavor, and hard water.
Overall, I don't think I would ever order this again. I hope their O'Defiant Stout is better, but I'm certainly wary.

Pours black with dark brown hues. Not much of a head, but lacing sticks.
The smell is of cocoa with slightly burnt coffee. Caramel/toffee and earthy notes are in the back.
The taste is of cocoa and caramel/toffee. It is sweet with bitterness from earthy notes and a charred character. It has a roasty, bittersweet finish.
It is medium-bodied with medium carbonation.
It is candy-like with a roasty/charred character mixing in. It's a pretty nice porter.
