Beer poured from tap into a Mug-shaped glass

A - Beer pours with a liquid, dark colored body; no head and if there was any, it obviously did not hold very well; body has a dark color to it,with a slightly reddish-hue around the edge; no lacing at all formed, not the usual for a porter

S - Light coffee and chocolate smell; deep roasted malt smell; dark brown sugar; dark fruit and washed out licorice smell

T - Coffee and light chocolate malt taste; dark fruit; touch of spice; finishes with a light licorice taste

M - Little body; effervescent; leaves behind a lingering dark chocolate taste that stays around for a while

D - Unique and interesting, especially since it came right out of the vat in which it was brewed from; smooth and easy to drink because it really didn't have much body to it; it's a bit watery for my porter-liking

On tap at brewery 9/30/11

The beer starts off with a strong roasted coffee and cocoa notes. It has a nice malty yet sweet middle. Theres hints of toffee bir very suttle. overall not a heavy beer that will weigh you down, yet will satisfy your porter needs.

Very nice porter from Defiant.

Pours a dark chocolate looking color with a little head.

Smell is toasted coffee with some dark chocolate scents. The malt and hops work well together and create a smooth finish.

Definitely worth a try, especially for porter fans. Won't be disappointed with this NY beer.

On draft at the brewery.

Poured a deep black hue with a one finger foamy off white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured light burnt malts and a soft subtle sweetness.

The taste consisted of a moderate roasted malt, dark chocolate and a touch of smoke. A nice noble hop spice filled in the spaces.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style.

Overall a tasty and easy drinking stout. Not as robust as others but tasty nonetheless.

A: The beer is very dark amber (near black) in color and was served with a thin, creamy beige head.
S: There's a mild aroma of dark malts in the nose
T: Like the smell, there are lots of flavors of dark roasted malts along with some notes of chocolate. There is some bitterness in the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied and smooth on the palate; the finish is somewhat dry.
D: The beer is very easy to drink and goes especially well with a meal.

On tap @ the Defiant Brewing Company on 7/25/09. 12 oz pour into a pint glass.

Pours a deep murky brown, topped with a thin layer of tan colored head. OK retention leaves some minimal spotty lacing back. The aroma is roasted coffee, with some toffee sweetness behind it, and spicy hop character pulling up the rear.

Roast and coffee are strong in the taste as well, but it is unfortunately matched with a overly bitter and astrigent feel, giving this a bit of an acrid coffee grounds character. Some silky toffee sweetness balances out some of this. Finishes bitter with roast and spicy hops that lingers on the tongue with a dry feel. The mouthfeel is medium bodied (maybe a touch lighter), with a pricklier carbonation that stays sharp. This is actually pretty easy drinking, bodywise.

I wanted to like this more, but the overly bitter and acrid middle section turned me off a bit. A decent effort but I probably wouldn't go back for another.

Pours pitch brown. Nice tan head. Nice creamy nose. Minor coffee tones are there. Flavor is smooth. The malty body doesn't bowl you over with crazy character, but it does deliver a smooth profile. Seems to be an appropriate bitter edge. The feel is smooth, as is the overall drinkability. An easy drinking porter with just enough oomph to keep it interesting.

Pours a nice dark black with flashes of red around the edges of the glass when it hits the light just right. First noticed a bubble gum aroma when the beer was placed in front of me. Rather strange for the style but it intrigued me. Also has a nice coffee/roasted aroma.

Maybe its just me, but I also taste the bubblegum flavor upon first sip. The roasted and chocolate flavors pull through after. The thought the sweetness played beautifully with the roasted background. Very drinkable, or poundable if you will. Mouthfeel was a little watery and thin.

Overall, a very refreshing porter. Sounds strange but very unique for the style. Neil continues to show his range of styles.

Neil Acer continues to exemplify his mastery of brewing. The appearnace of this beer is a darker ale with a good head. Smell's kind of bitter, but don't let that deter you. Taste's a little bitter at first, but the chocolate aftertaste is very pleasant to the palette. Not too thick of a feel. All fo these characteristics make it very drinkable. Another beauty by Neil Acer.

Growler filled at the brewery same day as review. Review taken from first glass poured from growler, stored at 50F, and served in a large snifter.

Color is mostly opaque ebony-brown with a fine one-finger tan head which lasts for about a minute before becoming a fine layer atop the beer.

Aroma is initially of gentle roasted malt and cocoa that in its own time gives way to caramel and some floral/grassy hops. A bit of a swirl rouses dried figs and pumpernickel to the surface. Throughout the glass the caramel remains dominant while the other elements trade off.

The mouthfeel is lucious and full with just the right amount of carbonation. Caramel and fruit come on strong on tha palate, but the cocoa and roasted malt win out on the long finish bringing everything full circle. Very nice job!

As black as any beer I've seen, I think the comment at the bar was "quite Nubian in nature." Crowned with a light tan head, thick n' creamy. Roasted malt nose with a hint of cherry. I starngely didn't get tons of coffee and chocolate here, as I usually get from Porters. I got the deeply roasted malt, but also heavy cream and banana. Totally mind blowing. Finished bitter, then it turned creamy and all was well with the world. Quite drinable for such a big beer.

9/29/2006 $7.50 Growler 5.80% Fresh on tap.

Appearance:

Pours an opaque pitch black with a thin film of tan head adrift on top that settles rapidly.

Aroma:

Smoked roasted malt with hints of caramel.

Taste/Mouthfeel:

Damn! Neil knows how to brew!!! Every beer of his I have tried (it's become an obsession of mine) has been spot on for style. This is uber-smooth with a creamy mouthfeel that carries with it a roasted malt characteristic. Notes of coffee with loads of cream and a touch of sugar dominate the flavors. Finish is slightly bitter but overall resoundingly asks you to drink sip after sip…
