650 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Bottle #82/300.

Appearance - Inky like the base beer, but lacking the surface presence. A few stray bubbles and it still stains the glass.

Smell - Nutty! Coffee and walnuts. Some hints of barrel in the shape of Bourbon and oak. Nothing very mellowing about the barrel flavors. Still has an acidic aroma. Even more than the soured version of the base.

Taste - Very acidic, but not like an infection. Coffee flavor, maybe because of the acidity. Nuttiness is less intense, or maybe just harder to isolate. Chocolate and bitter malts. Acidic finish.

Mouthfeel - Nice viscosity, as with the base. Still too acidic for me. I don't know what causes it in this one though. Well carbonated.

Overall - Still acidic, not sour. Never a traditional stout from Jackie O's. I like the walnuts, but the stout flavors never really come out.

Thanks to rudzud for sharing at my 30th birthday whale tasting.

Pours very dark light head that fades fairly quickly, super dark pitch black beer with thick legs.

Nose brings big malts, peanut butter and nuts, walnuts, light cocoa, hint of booze, not a soy aroma but a crazy dark pure darkness thing, barrel with vanilla, cocoa, and toasted.

Taste is very creamy, lush cocoa, chocolate galore, acidic, melted rich choc, velvety, little metallic, light warming booze, vanilla oak barrel, hint of bourbon and nice powdered cocoa.

Mouth is big and creamy, lush, lighter but decent carb, little tingly booze.

Overall pretty nice, fairly well done beer, a bit too much on the ridiculously dark malt characters, but nice flavors and nice barrel.

Shared with JLindros at his Birthday Whale Tasting. Reviewed from notes. HUGE thank to miketd for this bad boy.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip an oily black hue with not much of a head, but a nice mocha halo. Pretty straight forward.

S - Sweet zombie Jesus! Walnuts galore! Chocolate (bakers), caramel, light vanilla..everything is soft and and inviting with a nice bourbon backing.

T - Taste is just like the nose. More of those outstanding walnuts , chocolate, caramel, roasted malts, oak, vanilla, smooth bourbon. Just delicious.

M - Mouthfeel is nicely carbonated, lightly creamy, with the ABV hidden nicely.

O - Not really sure how this is under a 4...this beer was unbelievably delicious and was the favourite Jackie O's cracked, until I opened Skipping Pappy. Awesome brew.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass at Smoke & Barrel DC for the bottle share. Thanks to jacewg for the bottle.

A very light tan collar is presented on the pour, and a simple classic dark walnut brown body. Not as dark as I expected, but pretty much textbook.

Nose is tannic dry nuts, but also really mushy smelling. Very odd and weird nose, almost like a paper-mache wet paste sensation. Some good mix of roast malts and barrel aging character hide behind. I wouldn't say it's awful.

Palate is just weird. A light sour sensation mixing in with the roast character gives a sense of almost acrid grain. Dominates on the palate with a very thin body, without much of barrel feel and flavors coming through.

Overall this is a bit of a disappointment for my first Jackie O brew.

Black color. Smallish dark tan colored head. Decent retention. Very little lacing. Aroma is okay. There is heavily roasted malts, coffee, and a slight bit of char, but then there is a slightly sour green apple quality as well. Taste is on the way out. Tart. Sour coffee. Roasted malts and molasses, but not at all sweet. Mouthfeel is full bodied, but the tartness dominates. This may have been a great beer at one point, but its not anymore.

A- Pours super dark with a dark tan head that dissipates rather quickly.

S- Lots of caramel in the nose. Touch of bourbon and some roasted malts. Very nice smell.

T- Same caramel. Little bit of bourbon on the back end and something sour? That might just be in my head. Taste is behind the smell though

M- Very silky with just enough carbonation to clean everything up

O- Lots of good thing going on here but that sourness is really messing with my head

A: Pours very dark with about an inch and a half of dark brown head.

S: Smells different than most bourbon barrel aged stouts. Very little bourbon with a lot of caramel like sweetness.

T: Not a lot of bourbon. More in the aftertaste. Tastes more like a milk stout with a lot of sugary, caramel like tastes and even a little licorice.

M: Very smooth with a good amount of creamy thickness and little carbonation.

O: A good beer that doesn't really fit its style.

This is very similar to the rum barrel oil. Delicious, nutty and fairly sweet base beer, even more sweetness from the barrel aging; lots of vanilla and caramel and in this case a lot of butterscotch too. A tanginess from the barrel that isn't in the base beer--rum oil is like that too and I thought it was a product of the rum barrels, but apparently it's just how this beer interacts with barrels. Great beer, as good as if not better than bourbon dark apparition, not quite as magical as rum oil.

8.8/10
