22 oz. bottle served in a Southern Tier Tulip. 2012 vintage, bottle #100/312.

A: Pours a hazy lemon color with a pure white head forming on the pour. It recedes quickly to a thin ring. Some splotchy lace is left down the glass.

S: Slightly lemony with a sweet malt backing. Puckering with some grass. Slightly sour with some berry flesh fruitiness.

T: Sweet malt with some chalkiness. Pale malts, sweet fruit flesh with some light puckering lemon grass. A mild funkiness to the finish.

M: Light and dry with a chalky mouthfeel to it. Medium high carbonation.

O: Solid overall, a little to chalky for my liking and I'd like to have a little more complexity to it.

Big thanks to miketd for this bottle. Poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a nice crystal clear super light gold with a one finger white head that faded down to leave a thick dense quarter inch blanket. Just doesnt quit! Nice and thick side lacing too. Very, very nice.

S - Interesting aromas here. Definitely get that banana and super light mango. Some light brett funk, gentle lemon citrus along with some tropics. Very, very unique and interesting.

T - Wow, okay. Gone is the banana and is instead replaced by papaya and mango (both of which are light). Some nice light brett funk, lemons, gentle tartness. Some light tropical pineapple as well, faint orange. This is almost like a mimosa. I agree with what another reviewer posted; this is like a breakfast beer!

M - Mouthfeel is outstanding for the style. Super light with gentle prickly carbonation with the alcohol almost entirely hidden. One of the best examples of wild ale mouthfeels I have ever enjoyed.

O - Overall, this was an outstanding beer. Super unique, wish the aroma was better. All in all though this was a very tasty, incredibly drinkable beer from Jackie O's. Loved it.

Even though I live in Southern OH, I'm not familiar with the Paw Paw fruit so this was interesting.

Pours a very light gold, almost yellow with a tight, snow white head. Looks great in an oversized tulip. The aroma is unique, tropical, light brett funk, and tartness. Nothing special and fairly subdued. The flavor was not as expected. There is a definite tartness to the beer but it is integrated into a very fruit forward beer. The Paw Paw fruit lends a banana like note to the beer. Maybe some stone fruit and a little bit of dragon fruit. Certainly unique. The flavors are light and well integrated. This beer reminded me a little bit of Bambic from JP with a funkier, fruitier character.

Light on the palate with near perfect carbonation and a dry finish. A very well made beer that was certainly unique. I'd happily drink it again.

Pours a murky, but glowing if that's possible, yellow with thin skim that puddles and leaves some spattered lacing. When backlit I really like the looks of this.

Light tartness, mild yeast, lemon, some further nondescript fruitiness, and underlying funk and malt. Not quite the aroma I was expecting, as the fruits are lighter and the yeast and funk play a bigger role than I anticipated.

Understated lemon and whispy tartness up front lead to what I can only guess is the Paw Paw fruit. It's extremely green and woody in a very under ripe fruit way. It cuts a swath across the palate that overwhelms the underlying pale malts. A bit of banana and kiwi and a whole shit ton of raw woodsiness. Having never had the fruit, my only lasting impression is this seems to not have reached it's peak. My wife described it as eating a fruit that you shouldn't be. The finish is rather dry and leaves quickly with only a brief lingering whisper.

Mouthfeel is light, dry, and amply carbonated. The woody tannic presence makes itself felt here.

Overall, this is an interesting beer but I had hopes for a juicier and more vibrant fruit sour. Again, it just left the feeling that the fruits were not ripe. If you like your sours low on the pucker and fruits and heavier on the dryness and yeast than you might dig this. As is, it's a nice try and I'm thankful for the opportunity but it's not quite in my wheelhouse. My experience with Jackie O's has been either hit or big miss, and this falls somewhere towards compromise.

Growler to tulip. $30 for the fill at the pub.

Sampled 01AUG12, filled just four days before.

[A] Poured slow to preserve any effervescence that might have been lost from the growler fill and transport. The result is a thin one finger head, bright white in color, foamy in texture & retention just under medium. The body is a golden tint of yellow orange, slightly pale with around 50% opacity. Small strands of lace in irregular fashion.

[S] Tropical fruit flavors abound, namely banana, orange, guava & papaya. Oh my god, this is good! The sweet fruit aromas are grounded by a nice dose of Brett C, which is also contributing to the fruit forward complexity - as well as some dust and faint basement must.

[T] Think 'perfect breakfast cocktail'. Not that enjoying this beer should be limited to any time of day. The pawpaw fruit seems to be responsible for the banana and papaya, while the hops add a fresh orange and pineapple flavor. Again Brett ties it all together, balancing the sweet tropical fruits with a dry finish.

[M] Gentle tartness turns into a bright, refreshing crispness. Sweet upfront, dry on the end. Body is light to medium-light. Carbonation level compliments the body and flavor profile perfectly. Can't ask for much more.

[O] Brad god damn nailed this one. Straight up, Funky Southpaw is nothing short of fantastic. Local fans of wild ale must pay the brewpub a visit; a pour straight from the source WILL NOT disappoint.
