Dark brown color, slightly lighter edges, light brown head, small lace.

Plentiful bourbon barrel notes, peat, wood, dark fruits, and a cherry liked note in the back.

Taste was a little lighter on the bourbon barrel, nice woody peat note, dark fruits, spiciness. Cherry notes weren't there in the taste and especially once it warmed.

Full bodied mostly, good carb, pleasant slickness.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Bottle #5 of 300.

Appearance - Deep brown. Small brown head. Nothing exciting. Nothing bad.

Smell - Fruity and a touch of acidity. Always acidity with Jackie O's. Slight aroma of smoke. Just a touch of Bourbon.

Taste - Much fruitier. Acidic from the fruits. I guess it's plums. More smoked malt than the nose. Bourbon also more prominent. Fruitiness lingers throughout.

Mouthfeel - I'm always afraid these will turn sour. It doesn't. Nice slick body with medium low carbonation

Overall - Had this after Alesmith BA Wee Heavy so it fell short, but the fruits added a nice, although distressing, dimension.

The beer was served chilled in a snifter.

A- The body of the beer is dark brown coloration with ruby highlights. The head was a thick nugget coloration and had serious staying power.

S- The aroma of the beer was bourbon, combined with smokey peat, vanilla, oak, cocoa and a bit of earthyness.

T- The beer is loaded with bourbon flavor. Vanilla and caramel sweetness meet slightly smokey peat light cocoa and leathery flavors.

M- The body of the beer is just shy of full. The carbonation is moderate and works well. This is a very smooth and easy to drink beer. No alcohol in the mouth but plenty of alcohol warmth.

O- Dam tasty beer! Drank several of these at the release and would have been thrilled to have some more.

Bottle number 16/72--bottled on 11.16.09, and sampled roughly two years later. Picked this bottle up at the brewery at my first bottle sale at Jackie-O's (maybe Jackie-O's first bottle sale ever?)

Pours with very little carbonation, a brown-reddish color.

Hints of plum, cherry, vanilla, wet wood, red grapes, and a hint of bitterness in the nose with this one.

After two years, this beer seems to have aged well. Notes of sour grapes, vanilla, oak, and tart cherry in this beer. It is very tart, and lingering on the sour edge.

Overall, the color and consistency of the brew works for the style. It is flavorful, and has that wonderful, creative hint of Jackie-O's innovation to it--slightly sour, full of flavor. Tasting this two years after the bottling date left the beer a bit flat, but not lacking in its original mission--tasting great.

Had at the One Funky Afternoon release.

It was the best-looking beer I was served that day. Long lasting, though short, head on it. Nice antique lace colored head.

The aroma is built upon sweet brown sugar. There's a light tartness and some char/burnt sugar and molasses as well. Smelled boozy.

Tasted of very fresh bourbon. Must've been wet barrels. Vanilla comes into play. Charcoal, raisin, and toffee. Also sweet ripened cherry.

Sweet with bitter oak and char on the finish.

An interesting take on the style. With some refinement this could really be something quite good.

Enjoyed during my long weekend in Tampa. I had the chance to meet some great people and try some new and some amazing new things. Had a lot of fun, but glad to be home. Enjoyed on 4/11/2011.



Pours a thick, black as night dark oil color with a huge tan head that caps the top very nicely. Lots of smooth, chocolaty lacing drips down the sides and coats the entire glass with a thick wall of chocolate colored lacing.

The aroma is warming, boozy and full of sweet, sugary notes. Smoked malts, brown sugar, molasses, tobacco, and leather all coming forward, the warmer it gets the sweeter it becomes. The first sip reveals a thick, creamy feel that lets the flavor coat the tongue and really provide a tremendous amount of depth to this. For being a base for some of their bigger stouts, this was amazing. Rich chocolate and coffee mix with brown sugar and molasses. Really very well done here. Rich tobacco and smooth licorice wrap up the finish and leave a long lasting flavor on the tongue.

Overall just a really, really good version of the style. No clue on the abv, but it was warm for sure, but so well pulled off and with soo much depth, really just a top notch offering from Jackie o.

One tap at the brewpub.

Pours a moderately-dark brown with a good off-white head followed by a thin collar. The nose brings the barrel character forward with some mild bourbon plus a bit of light roast. Overall, the components are fairly shy. Light chocolate there as it warms. The taste adds in small amounts of dark cherries and some dark fruits. Light sweetness and a bit of bourbon. Body is medium with light carbonation. Pretty good; I enjoyed it.

Appearance
This was one of the best looking beers in my line up of tasters from Jackie O's. It had a substantial, frothy head that held there the whole time. Plenty of lacing was the result. The beer is a grayed down black.

Aroma
This stuff smells weird and not at all what I expected. Its very peppery. Like black peppercorn as well as bell peppers. There's also a healthy dose of raw molasses which is a nice aroma on its own but I can't get past that strange pepperiness.

Taste
Equally as strange. There is an unavoidable flavor of wet paper towels. Some bourbon and oak help things move along. Plenty of peat and smoke. It gets much better as it warms.

Mouthfeel
Very dry. Too dry.

On tap at the experimental beer fest. 8 oz. pour

A. Pours brown with red edges leaving string of lacing.

S. Lots of smoke with bourbon and a slight tartness.

T. The oak comes through in this one with some vanilla notes alongside the bourbon. The smoke and the cherry-like tartness also come through.

M. Medium body with medium level of carbonation.

D. Drinks well for a 10%. A good beer; I really like its contribution to the Cellar Cuvee 4.

On tap at Jackie O's. It was dark murky orange or light brown color with a substantial tan foam. The aroma was, well, perfect. It definitely brought peat bog to mind, just about what I'd like to get from a Scotch ale. Sweet malts and smoky peat, caramel, this hits the aromatic targets.

It has the flavors of all of the above, plus maybe some oakiness (a little vanilla that I didn't smell). Peat smoke makes the beer in my opinion. Well carbonated but not over-carbonated, absolutely a top shelf beer. 10% ABV is the only thing slowing the consumption rate.

22oz bomber #47/72 courtesy of alexsdad06.

Pours a murky chocolate brown with a small wispy beige head that leaves a minimal collar around the sides.

Aroma is heavy on bourbon and sweet vanilla. Plenty of smoky peat and sweet caramel malts.

The taste isn't quite what I was expecting. It's fruity with lots of esters and tons of bourbon. There is not much caramel malt or peat in the taste that I can tell.

The mouthfeel is pretty thin for a scotch ale, seriously boozy with low carbonation.

This is my first Jackie O beer and it's decent, but nothing ground-breaking. It's definitely on the watery side with a hefty booze character. OK.

A: Pours a dark brownish amber hue with a small tan head. No real retention or lace noted.

S: Very earthy aromas. Mushrooms and black tea. Hints of peat and smoked malts.

T: Nice candy sweet flavors with subtle smokey notes. Hints of dark fruit, bourbon, and hints of oak.

M: Medium in body, pretty smooth and easy drinking.

D: Not bad overall. Lots of good flavors they just don't mesh together real good.

I've had a few beers from this brewery and I think I may be done with them in general. Beer is dark brown and hazy. Has no head, no lacing, and carbonation is low....

The aroma is pretty good. Kind of a liquor quality to the whole thing, very woody, slight sour.

Beer is offensively thin. Like water. Mostly wood in the palate. None of the scotch character I expect from beers like this. It was light on flavor and completely bland. There was some mild sweetness at the front of the palate but by the time I finished a sip I immediate forgot what I was drinking. Not memorable, not good, not interesting.

Thanks to Brad for sharing this at his tasting on Saturday!

This beer pours a thin looking brown, with virtually no head or lace whatsoever. Pleasant aromas of sweet malt, with oak, wine, and bourbon. The taste is completely dominated by wood. The barrel taste really overpowers the tannin, bourbon, and any other flavors trying to emerge. There is an unexpected slight sourness, though not necessarily in a bad way. The mouthfeel is just too thin. Unfortunately, this aspect of the beer really affects the overall score in almost every category. This was a really cool beer, but just not quite what it could be. Perhaps subsequent batches will build on this and improve.

rhinos00 hooked me and the brother up with some super rare Jackie O brews... Steven cracked this at the most recent bigger tasting to, "punish everyone who left early." Anyway, Alex hooked us up and is a trader who truly understands what this community is all about.

Bottle #66/72

Clear dark brown.... thin lite tan head... no lacing.. little retention.

Nose shows bunches of caramel and some minor vanilla.... a weird fruity ester quality sorta permeates the entire beer in the aroma and the glass... makes me think of cherries... the bourbon is a touch too much.

Flavor is more fruity than the nose.. the bourbon is pretty heavy showing cherries and vanilla .. the "Scotch Ale" characteristics are sorta drowned out... caramel maltiness seems a tad thin... a bit earthy on the finish...

Body is medium/lite with a little too much prickly carbonation... I really do appreciate the overall take and the bottle, but "one bourbon, one scotch, and one beer" leaned too heavily on the bourbon for me to like a bunch.

Again.. interesting... yet too much of too much stuff crammed into one 22.... That said, damn glad I got to try it... Cool trade Alex... Truly appreciated.

Pours a dark woody brown with a thin tan head.

Nose is for sure the best aspect of this beer. Notes of bourbon, oak, vanilla, peat, smoked malts, caramel, toffee, chocolate and some ripe pitted fruits.

Taste was a bit weak. Some light nutty malts up front followed by subtle flavors of wood, whiskey, smoked candy malts, bitter molasses and an interesting tart cherry presence.

Body is on the light side for the style, but well carbonated. Quite thin through the finish.

Nothing too impressive here. Unique, but lacks depth and complexity.

Bomber shared at Woodshop 5.0. Dark but clear brown color with a thin ecru head. Sweet bourbon notes without the booziness, coconut, light smoke. Chocolate, roast, smoke, and peat in the flavor, along with an inexplicable winey note that's pretty mild but there. Dark fruits and caramel make minor appearances. Thick, slightly acidic, very good.

Drove down a few days after the release to check this one out. Poured into a snifter. Let it sit for a while to raise the temperature.

A- Pours a dark chocolate, maroon color. Produced a fingers width of off-white head. Reduced to a slight ring shortly after consumption.

S- Wow, this was phenomenal! Heavy notes of vanilla and caramel, almost gave it a butterscotch type aroma. This was complimented perfectly by the presence of oak and bourbon. Traces of alcohol in the back end of the beer. Just a great mix of fantastic aromas.

T- Not as overwhelming as the nose, but still great. Vanilla and bourbon are definitely present upfront. The thing I like about aging scotch ales in bourbon barrels is the smooth, oak flavored, dark fruit finish. Oak barrel was pretty distinct and really stood out in this beer.

M- Medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Could have had a slightly bigger body.

D- Pretty drinkable for a bourbon barrel aged beer. Had a couple of snifters and could have had more.

Overall, another very solid beer by Jackie O's. This place definitely needs to get more recognition.
