Notes:
A Flanders style brown ale. We took Chomo-lung-ma (our organic honey nut brown) and aged it in a second generation Woodford Reserve barrel (subtle bourbon flavor, notes of American oak) for four months with 30lbs of tart cherries and a specially blended culture of wild yeast and beer souring bacteria. Chunga's Old Bruin exhibits and aroma of sweet cherries and faint chocolate/ roasted malt complemented by a faint oak bouquet. The flavor has a pronounced sour character with the caramel, chocolate, and roasted malt finish.

Pours a hazy dark orange. Touch of off-white head. Looks decent.
Smells tart and cherry heavy. A bit muddled. Pretty nice flavour profile. Lots of cherry, oak, tart but not acidic. Again a bit muddled but pretty tasty. Overall well carbonated and quite enjoyable

I could have sworn I reviewed this beer, but I guess not. This was the most recent batch, shared by Chris (spycow). Served in a Cigar City snifter.
A - Thin tan foam settles quickly to wisps and a thin collar of bubbles, as well as a few specks of lace. Solid and opaque dark brown body.
S - Cherries, sweet musky funk, vanilla, oak. No trace of the listed 8.5%, and as it warms a growing Sweet Tart candy flavor.
T - The taste isn't quite on par with the aroma. Heavy lactic tartness, with a hefty dose of oak and light tart cherry flesh. There's perhaps a hint of chocolate from the brown ale malt base. Again, the alcohol is well hidden.
M - Medium body, very dry and tannic from both fruit and oak. Lower carbonation. No alcohol warmth. Could use a bit more spritz, but otherwise pretty nice.
D - A solid beer that's easy to drink. Not too acidic, nor too boozy, with sufficient complexity and depth, and good balance between the various flavors. I'd happily drink this again and hope Brad keeps making it.

Tried this at a CCB weekly tasting, thanks Jason!
It's a nice Old Bruin, nothing that special but nice to have tried it. It's kind of a murky brown with a acidic smell. Tastes like Dissident but not as good.
Nice to have tried it but won't be searching it out again.

22oz bottle into a snifter
A: Pours a very dark clear brown color with a finger and a half of off white foam. Retention is average.
S: Balanced lactic and acetic sourness, some sour cherry, and a bit of caramel sweetness. Sour cherry is definitely the dominant aroma here - acidity is not overly strong. Caramel, brown sugar, and a bit of roast balances it out.
T: Puckering tartness is followed by sour cherry, mild lactic acidity, and a nice toffee sweetness to balance. A nice musty funk is also present to add complexity. The sweetness, sour cherry, and tartness work very well together with a nice, non-overbearing sourness. Rarely do I taste a beer that mixes sweetness and sourness so well, particularly with a nice fruit flavor.
M: Medium mouthfeel with low carbonation. Works well with the beer.
O: I love this beer. Sour cherry, tartness, and sweet toffee mix extremely well together. It's quite balanced and flavorful. I often find the acidity overtakes this style, but the sourness is mild and balanced by fruitiness and caramel sweetness in this beer. Probably the best beer I've had of this style.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter.
Appearance: Pours a cloudy reddish brown with a small layer of off white head. The head fades to a very small ring around the pour.
Smell: Rather sour, lots of dark fruit and vinegar. I'm getting some tart red berries along with cherries. A bit oaky as well.
Taste: Definitely an oude bruin. Lots of red berry tartness along with some vinegar. Just a touch of sweetness balances out the tart, but doesn't take over. The finish is full of red berry sour notes. Some cherries and oak throughout the sip.
Mouthfeel: Medium body with aggressive carbonation and a dry finish.

Pours light brown with some red hue along the edges. Small white head leaving solid lacing down the glass.
A bit sweeter on the nose than expected although a good tartness from the cherries and some oak presence cut through it. Just a touch of booze.
Tastes has similar components although the oak shines through more. A little underlying sweetness while still being moderately sour. The oak creates a drying presence on the back end bringing the flavors together.
Medium in body and carbonation.
Another very good bottle from Jackie O's. Good complexity with a good mix of sweet and sour.

Reviewed from notes taken 4-4-12
P: 24 fl oz bottle, 6 oz pour into a snifter.
A: SRM is light brown with dark cherry tinge. Semi-trasparent. Head is clear/light off white, 1/2 in, soapy bubbles, and dissipates to line the edge of the glass. Medium carbonation. Medium/light lacing.
S: Moderate tartness with natural cherry tones. Medium oak notes and a light sweetness, subtle chocolate nuances, gentle bourbon presence.
T: Follows the nose very closely. Tartness/sourness is a little sharper than the nose indicates, but is very nicely rounded by the 24 months of oak aging. Cherries are very delicately and thoughtfully incorporated, still making their presence known while harmoniously blending with bourbon and soft chocolate flavors. Aftertaste is predominantly tart, with cherry, oak, bourbon, and chocolate notes manifesting at different points.
M: Medium body. Feel is a juxtaposition between tart notes and the natural fruit and also oak characteristics. Bourbon makes a very gentle impression on the feel. Wet finish.
O: One of the best beers in the "sour" family of beer I have ever had. This is one you just have to try to really get the gist of all the things that are going on with this beer. I don't give out "5" ratings lightly, and imo this beer has earned that distinction.
