Poured into a stemmed Yuengling glass on 1/27/13

Best before: 06/21/13

In the glass this medium-dark brown beer is nearly black aside from tobacco highlights at the stem. A one finger head thins slowly. Retention is thin at the center but bunches up more around the inside of the glass. Solid swaths of lace.

Smooth aromas of roasted chocolate and dark malt with just a hint on tangy roast. Mild pine hop overtones. Solid in its simplicity. The flavor is dry roast throughout with a swell of roasty chocolate in the middle. Subtle hop profile adds a touch of earthiness. The only thing I don't care for is a papery taste that picks up in the finish after the roast flavors have subsided. Light, fairly crisp body with average carbonation. Nothing too fancy there.

Overall, I like Baba Black Lager and wouldn't mind having it again. It's the sort of beer that lends itself to drinking and not so much reviewing.

Let me just start by saying its the best Black Lager I have ever drank. Super smooth and super tasty. Low in alcohol but High in taste. Have bought multiple six packs of CANS and its one of my favorites. I used to be a bottle only guy until I tried this beer. You can't beat a good beer in a can. Definitely would recommend this to anyone who likes dark beers, whether you like stouts or porters this one is one to try.

My friend sent me a message about this beer so I grabbed two. It is a dark beer for sure but it isn't super heavy. I learned that it is a session beer which means you can drink a bunch of them. I could drink a few of these and not feel like I drank a loaf of rye bread.

Definitely a tasty beer and one I would like to have again.

Got this in Uinta mix pack. I figured this was the throw away in the case. Turns out to be my favorite.

The color is awesomely dark. Black as night. The head was thick and impressive staying put the entire time just floating on the jet black liquid Picture perfect.

The taste was much like a porter but the texture was lighter. Really a sessionable beer which is perhaps the biggest surprise of this beer.

Really nice beer.

Pours with a beautiful frothy head--as classic continental lagers should. The head itself is tan...with the beer being a solid black--you cannot see light through it.

Very little aroma other than some roast malt.

Taste is smooth, with a basic dark (but not at all bitter) malt flavor (Caraffa III?) --not sweet like a brown ale or some stouts. Hops are only enough to balance the malt, giving a crisp refreshing after taste.

Light mouthfeel, appropriate for a lager.

Overall, a VERY nice schwarzbier, not quite as good as as Heavy Seas/Devil's Backbone "Land Ho!" schwarz, or Köstritzer, but its getting there...

Certainly much better than Guinness' attempt at this style--and it warms my heart that Guinness, Sam Adams, Saranac, Full Sail, Heavy Seas, Duck Rabbit, Gordon Beirsch, Weeping Raddish--and a number of other craft-brewers are doing this classic German/Czech style.

~~~`
Just trying this now from a can. I do think, as brewers now will tell you, a can is the ideal packaging for beer. Aluminum is easily recycled--it keeps the beer totally safe from being light-struck....and the coatings now used protect the beer from metalic tastes...plus it cools faster, and cannot break, it's lighter weight and smaller size--ALL ways, except perhaps appearance, cans are better. Anyway, still a delightful beer, which I swear MUST have some rauch malt in it (SMOKEY!). I'm going to the Uinta website to check....
NATURALLY, it doesn't say, which is smart marketing, as mysterious sells....
Type: 12-oz. can
Glass: Karl Strauss pint glass
From: Bine & Vine Bottle Shop in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $1.99
Purchased: June 4, 2013
Consumed: June 5, 2013
Misc.: Best before Oct. 17, 2013
Poured a very dark reddish brown, practically black color with two fingers of tan head. Very good thick and foamy lacing along the sides of the glass. Great retention all the way down.
Smelled chocolate, bitter coffee beans, caramel, toffee, roasty nuts and chocolate milk with a touch of skunkiness.
Tasted not quite as good as the smell, but good nonetheless. Tasted smoky woodfire, bitter coffee, chocolate, caramel, toffee and roasty nuts. Was hoping for a bit more here, but was left disappointed.
Medium-to-full body. Creamy slick texture. Average carbonation. Bitter abrupt finish. Feels a bit stronger than 4.00 percent.
Another good beer from Uinta. I’m pretty sure everything they make is above average. I’d try this again.
A: Frothy 2 finger high dark peanut shell tinted head sits atop a flat black colored body Tiny golden-brass micro-beads of carbonation creep up along the glass walls. Thick spongy band lacing encircles the glass, lengthy time rate for retention with a covering that was mostly lasting.
S: Black tea, fresh roastiness, burnt flowery bitterness. Green melon flesh fruitiness lurks beneath.
T: Roasty fresh flavor with a freshly burnt bitterness of flowers and burnt caramel sweetness to balance things out .Earthy tea, dark and sweet fruit mingle about.
M: The mouthful was dry and roasty, creamy and frothy feel upon the build up and hold with a soft factor of carbonation and roasty leave off the tongue.
O: Overall dark and roasty fresh, but softly delicate in delivery. A schwarz with some roasty depth, texture and character.
