Pours black with red highlights around the edges. Mocha colored head of creamy foam that fell off to a rocky cap and clinging lace. Nose is understated and a graceful blending of chocolate and piney hops. The fruit was there but not as prominent as it could have been. Chocolate was strong but not bitter on the nose, looks and smells like candy. Spice character is very faint and the malt opens up with the chocolate as it warms and some caramel and sugar. Taste is round and roasted. Hops are bitter but not aggressive. Drinks dry and doesn’t have a lot of aftertaste. Pine needles and a touch of cocoa on the back palate. Finishes with a bitterness that stops just short of harsh. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy but a little unbalanced as the roasted malt left a little sour like coffee that had sat in the pot too long. The alcohol really came through as this warmed and left a little burn going down. It was more carbonated than it looked. This was a vigorous imperial black ipa that really gets your attention.

A - Nearly black body, ruby highlights at the edges. Off-white head has great retention and lacing. Not sure how the style could look much better.
S/T - Roasty and dry like a stout. Hops add little to the taste, maybe some pine needles in there. Taste dominated by the roasted, burnt black malts. Finishes with assertive bitterness, but the burnt/roasted flavors linger with hop taste nearly non existent.
M - Voluminous full body, smooth, yet prickly. Abv well hidden.
O - Maybe I just don't get the style, I don't know. I figure it should have much more in the way of hop flavor if it has the IPA badge on it, and not just flavorless bitterness. Way too roasty, little hop character (other than bitterness). Even if the hops were more present, the flavor combination of roasted malt and pine/citrus hops just isn't going to work for me. Not gettin' this one again.

12oz bottle poured into DFH off centered ale glass.
A-Black body with a nice foamy two fingered width pale brown head. Nice lacing on the glass ware as I drink it.
S-Roasted chocolate notes with hints of vanilla give way to a piney and citrus nose. This smell is great. Nothing is over powering and the hops blend beautifully with the chocolate roast notes.
T-The taste is more on the maltier side than the nose would perceive it to be. Velvety chocolate upfront with the resinous hop citrus flavors filling in between the finish which is a roasted slightly astringent taste.
M-A smooth medium/high body. On the dry side to the finish.
O-I have been looking for a great Black IPA and this one is it. The aroma and flavor are what you are looking for with this style. The hop and malt bill balance each other out very well and works perfectly in the smell/taste of the beer.
