The moment I popped the cork on this one, I realized I couldn't go back. Go back to a time that this was sitting in my fridge, staring at me with its awesome, hilarious label. Taunting me.

A: The cork popped with a whimper rather than a bang. The beer is undeniably gorgeous. It's a dark brown with hints of gold, a no-nonsense barleywine look with head that just wants to be part of the fun, to varying degrees of success. Just too wonderful to look at.

S: Vanilla, oak, and raisins dominate the aroma, with an absolutely captivating finish of how-do-they-still-smell-so-good fresh hops. I would buy an air freshener for my car that smells like this.

T: My first sip sort of frightened me. I'm alone to enjoy this brew, and I know that my fiance wouldn't like this flavor bomb, but that doesn't curb my regret. I feel like Caligula drinking this without sharing. It does not allow for big sips: once it coats your tongue, the sweet and sour malty oaky business and citric hop quality doesn't allow you to take too much at once. One of the most full-bodied beers I have ever tasted. The alcohol is completely masked. I implore everyone to have at least a sip of this. And to think: I was saving my bottle of Labyrinth because I assumed it would be the better beer. I can't imagine this brewery making something that tastes better than this.

M: A bit syrupy, but in a pleasing way that counteracts the hop bite (This was barrel aged! How do they have such a fresh bite?!) and lends a lot of smoothness to the more astringently liquorish qualities of the bourbon flavor. What could have this alcohol-on-the-tongue dissolving feeling instead coats and pleases the mouth. Great stuff here.

D: It's a sipper. But at a price of $12-$18 per bottle depending on where you buy it, this still feels like an incredible bargain compared to some of the pretenders out there.

I would buy a case of this to pop open on every special occasion that I observe over the next ten years. It's that level of special.

Straight from the cellar as I took this Covid lockdown as a time to drink down the cellar. Bottled 4/01/2010

Very little fizzy head mostly from the pour, no retention, I think I see oil on the top, decent legs, dark murky brown color with basically no light coming through

Nose brings some nice sweet malts, aged sweet malts with some winey oxidation, some port and brandy like oxidation and dark fruits, lots of caramel, molasses, toffee, etc, light bourbon and some vanilla oak as well, touch of chocolate covered raisin as well

Taste brings big sweet malts, not super sweet but perceived sweetness, big caramel, toffee, and molasses as well, with more of the aged soft malt and oxidation notes, hint of papery oxidation but more like brandy and winey notes, with more dark fruits, prune, fig, a little plum, and a bit more chocolate covered raisin as there's a touch of chocolate in there, light baking spices and a little vanilla barrel, as well as light bourbon, pretty much no alcohol, a little spicy hop bitterness, drier finish but a bit sticky, touch of perfumey alcohol, bit more bitterness, and some cranberry craisin like

Mouth is fuller bod, almost chewy like, thicker and a little smooth caramel, very low carb, touch of alcohol warmth

Overall a nice barleywine with some good aged characters, love the fruit and winey brandy oxidation, and lack of alcohol was nice, but wish the bourbon was a bit more present but faded with age as expected. lack of carb affected it a bit as well but the caramel velvety notes are nice

First of all, the dude who named this a “shelf turd” doesn’t have any business doing reviews, sounds like your goal from the go was to bash this, so why buy it?

Anyways, same batch as said dude, bottled 01/11/12 so definitely some time to settle down

Served at 55°, normal pour from 750ml bottle into a Bruery Terreux stemless snifter, body is muddy copper, tan head with decent retention, no lacing left behind

Aroma is mostly boozy bourbon but a tad bit of cardboard, definitely some sweet vanilla oak notes, but upon head agitation, some rich plum and grape flavors, this seems very reminiscent of a fine red wine

Taste is sweet vanilla oak, definitely a lot of dark stone fruit, boozy plums and pomegranates, even some caramel biscuit-like flavors on the finish

Mouthfeel is smooth with no alcohol burn from the abv, not the thickest BW you’ll ever have but definitely some gravity there with a sticky mouthfeel

Overall for picking this up at $4.99, I’m pleased, honestly just bought it for kicks since saw that dudes horrible review, apparently he’s never had a barrel aged barley wine..

Shelf turd, picked up August 10th 2018, bottled 05/06/14. Yes, this beer has been sitting on the shelf for 4 years. I passed by it for 4 years due to unitas other sub par offerings ive had in the past. Since it was marked down from $12.99 to $4.99 id figured id have mercy and try it. However, it had no mercy on my pallate. There is 0 bourbon barrel on this beer. In fact, i doubt this beer even touched a bourbon barrel. instead, there is a weird , floral, hoppy thing going on which doesnt match the beer's appearance. think a basic lagunitas hopped beer, and just not on par for the style at all. it is very off putting and is nothing like burbon county, firestone, or any other real barrel aged barleywine. id pass, even at 67% off.

Note: This is part of my Shelf Turd series reviews, dedicated to Lee's Liquor on East Sunset Road in Las Vegas. A legendary shelf turd beer shop which has absolutely no regard for craft beer. I got this beer for $4.99 marked down from $12.99. A shelf turd of 4 years.

Also, YungAnejo is a skinny beaner faggot who should stick to his own reviews. If you want to meet me for a fistfight in any Las Vegas back alley just name the time and place. You like dog shit beer and your pallate would be happy licking a dogs asshole 5 stars. Skinny fucking dick lick

Tastes like a watery butterscotch drink. Not much bourbon to speak of, fair bit of toffee and butterscotch, thin body, undercarbonated, without much to show for all of it.
