750 ml bottle, corked and caged. Bottled 3/23/11. Chestnut color with a goog tan head. Good retention for the size of this beer, and a nice amount of lace.

Ripe fruit, fig, toffee and caramel in the nose. A bit of bourbon in the background.

Good fruity notes up front. Nice toffee flavor. Some sweetness, but nothing overwhelming. A touch of bourbon, but not a great deal. Some drying oak at the back. Maybe a bit too dry.

Medium body, good carbonation. Easy drinking for such a big beer. Not bad, but seems a bit too dry. Still a good beer.

Bottled in May of 2011

A: pours a murky brown with two fingers of tan head that recedes into a thin layer with a little lacing.

S: caramel, vanilla, raisins, and oak dominate the nose with some slight oxidation notes.

T: similar to the aroma, caramel, vanilla, raisins and dates, and oak flavors dominate. There are some oxidized flavors here as well along with some hearty bread notes before a finish that has only a little alcohol presence.

M: medium-thick body with lowish carbonation, this beer isn't as sticky sweet as many barleywines, which is nice.

O: a solid beer overall. I'd like a bit more depth and bourbon character, but there's nothing particularly offensive about it.

A: into a tulip, brown ale with a few fingers of tan head that left clingy lace down the glass - head persisted throughout the drink

S: earthy grains, bourbon and oak, candied fruits

T: sweet figs and molasses up front, with dry, whiskey woods and hearty grains to finish - nice complexity hinting at dark musky fruits, oak alcohol vapors, and chewy barley - some suggestions of savory spices

M: medium-full bodied, smooth but with a semisweet bitterness to close, some fizz of carbonation, slight coating on the tongue

O: hearty, not too sweet, complex and well-balanced hop and malt mixture. Much better than I expected.

750ml caged and corked
Bottled 9/7/10

Pours a rusty brown color throughout, no head, in fact there's hardly any bubbles at all, no lacing on the glass.

Smell has a nice caramel malt backbone, touches of fruit, slight hint of bourbon but nothing overwhelming.

Taste starts with the caramel malt but is soon overtaken by an odd bitterness, tastes of stale piney hops and leaves a bad aftertaste, it is not helped by the fact that the beer is dead flat, not a hint of carbonation, that really leaves this beer behind in body and flavor and only accentuates the staleness.

For a barleywine, this has not aged well, although I do not know if there was carbonation to begin with. Aged in a cool and dark cellar since receiving it.
