A: Pours a copper color with a towering 3 fingers of head that eventually settles down to a thin cap. Leaves some nice, thick lacing

S: Plenty of resiny and piney hops, with an almost tea-like note as well. Also get some lightly spicy malts. Alcohol comes through slightly

T: More balanced than the nose would suggest, with some sweet malts coming thorough right along with the hops. Neither really takes front stage, and mellow each other out. Malts are sweet and lightly spicy and the hops are earthy, piney, and grassy. Finishes bitter with a light alcohol kick

M: Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation

O: Definitely one of the more balanced DIPAs out there, with a big malt presence to go along with the hops. The bitterness eventually wins out over the sweetness, and the alcohol has a looming presence throughout. Definitely for those who like a well-balanced IPA

I picked this up at Giant in Linglestown, poured chilled from a 750 into a tulip.

The color is deep copper with an almost ruby hue with thick cream of 2 fingers or more with fine bead and lace sticks well. The smell is very fruity up front with lots of piney woody hop aromas when swirled with a hint of alcohol ester and light sweet malt aroma. The feel is very bitter and gassy with sharp bitterness and slightly astringent feel with light sweetness and subtle acidic and warming texture of alcohol with spicy almost abrasive finish.

The taste is full of resinous piney hop flavor with sharp bitter hop tastes covering some of the malt sweetness yet you know it is there based on the fullness on the palate it is also obscured slightly by the alcohol which makes the bitterness of the hops seem harsher than it needs to be, but a relatively dry finish leaves the mouth ready for the next pummeling on the palate with hops which don't seem to let up. Overall this is a drinkable beer, but I would probably have shared this rather than enjoyed this bruiser by myself if I had known what I was getting into. I recommend chilling this well, perhaps some of the issue was I only gave it 1/2 hour in the icebox rather than a full hour the heavy bottle could have used. I would pair this with a nice pepper steak or some chili to augment the hops with some complimentary spice perhaps.

Poured a nice deep golden orange, almost amber like in color. Had a really appealing one finger, off white, fluffy head. No visible carbonation bubbles and left a pleasing lace trail.

Smells of piney hops and fresh citrus maybe orange?

Tastes of sweet caramel at first with a subtle citrus flavor. Has a spiciness to it and a nice big hoppy taste which is really pleasent on the tastebuds and isn't too overpowering.

Leaves a slight bitterness in the finish and has a bit of a thick mouthfeel with a slight stickiness that coats the whole mouth.

Overall really surprised and impressed with this beer. A bit high in alcohol so it's definitely a sipper! Would absolutely drink this again!

22 oz. wine type bottle corked and caged.

Pours a clear orange amber color with a wispy honey colored had that remains persistently.

Smell is reminiscent of Myrcenary with a sharp piney note.

Taste is very harsh bitterness. Piney with grapefruit pith and dry on the end. Lasting biterness and an alcohol bite.

Mouthfeel is full and oily with smooth effervescence.

Overall this is a bit too much despite my love of hops. I like west coast style like Double Jack but this DIPA did not meet that standard.

Sweet, warm, and bitter- Uinta devises a larger-than-life IPA that re-routs the common smoothness of IPA onto a path that's somewhat barleywine-like.

Deep amber hues and golden highlights illuminate the beer, even through its unfiltered hoppy cloud- giving the beer a honey-like appearance. Firmly headed at first, the beer releases an ivory white foam that caps the beer with a dense froth. But the head collapses back into the beer nearly half way through the session and leaving minimal lace behind.

Citrus and pine lead the way, but a supportive back note of caramel gives the beer's aroma a mild semblance of balance. Apparent alcohols offer a fruity, spicy tinge that I'm used to seeing in barleywines.

Malty sweetness greets the early palate, just before the hops settle in. White grapefruit peels, orange pith, and pine resins balance at first but then begin to overshadow the malts at the middle. But as the balancing sweetness recedes, the hops grip the throat with mild grassy-harsh bitterness. This also leads the way to allow for strong acetone alcohols to taste somewhat of cough syrups in finish.

Medium-full textures are due to early sweet sensations and embedded carbonation. But just as the hop bitterness sets in, so do mild astringency, spicy alcohol bite, and slight fusal roughness. A fruity and hot finish lingers deep into finish for an appealing yet unsettled aftertaste.

Detour is a tasty imperial IPA with somewhat one-dimensional hop bitterness, sweet off-balance, and alcohols that get a little out of control- all these insinuate a lean toward barleywine status, if ever so slightly.

A - Nice amber/red color with moderate cloudiness. Stocky foam with thick lacing

S - Even balance of floral and pine hopiness

T - Malty and dry. Touches of bubble gum but finishes rather flat, bitter and dry.

M - Thick and zingy. Heavy for a DIPA.

O - Drinkable but not something I seek out. Could use a little more balance and slightly less carbonation.

Appearance: This beer has a red to amber coloring with yellow orange foam.

Smell: Floral with pine.

Taste: Nice spice and toasted wood. Pine. Light flowers.

Mouthfeel: Lighter than I would have expected from a double IPA but not necessarily in a bad way. Medium-full mouthfeel with a long finish.

Overall: I love the spice and heat. The flowers and pine are not nearly as strong in the taste as they are in the nose. Good beer.

Corked bottle...nice pop. Copper-red color with big head that lasts.
Aroma of dish water, citrus hops, alcohol.
Big, rich mouthfeel with significant carbonation.
Flavors of citrus hops, mango rind, tart grapefruit, dark cane sugar... slight pepper, cream of tartar, rum, pine, caramel. Big flavors with some significant astringency, alcohol and burnt sweetness with a somewhat dry finish. Not all the flavors I love in a double IPA but decent.

Poured from a 750ml bottle. Great color of bronze orange with good carbonation. Moderate head and lacing.

Brought this bottle along to a BBQ and it was well received. Not very hop forward on the nose but a decent amount of citrus zest was present.

Mouthfeel was above average. Nice sweetness present on initial entry and a good balance between hop and malt with neither being very forward and virtually no bitterness on the finish. I think this was very pleasant and one I'd grab again.

750 ML bottle poured into a tulip, bottled 11/19/12

A - Pours a clear amber with red hues. Two finger fluffy light tan head that leaves some nice lacing. That's a fine looking beer.

S - Hops dominate the nose. Piney, resiny, some citrus. Notes of bread in the background.

T - Sweet malts upfront, a punch of pine and resin hops in the middle, medium bitterness. Finishes pretty dry for such a high abv. Also has a slight astringency in the flavor.

M - Medium to full bodied, light carbonation. Thick and definitely a sipper.

O - Good beer, not of the top DIPAs but I've had many worse.

Pours deep clear orange with a good thick cream colored head. Later pours out of the bomber result in a foamy skim. Nice lace and retention. Really pretty color.

Pine and resinous hop notes, some toasted malt.

Piney hops up front, leading to alcohol and some toasted malt. Boozy. Hop bitterness is thick on the palate. Malt is there, but never really develops. Some over-browned bead crust bitterness, very light fruit. An aggressive brew, but a little uneven. Dries out a bit in the end and is heavy bitter at the very end.

Medium to medium-full in body.

Very decent. Very hop forward (good), but needs a bit more malt development. That said, I'd still drink this again.

Today I had a Uinta Detour DIPA. It is my third bottle so I decided to review it. A 750ml bottled on 9/25/12 poured into my Stone Smoked Porter pint glass. $8.99 at Total Wine.

A. 5. Absolutely beautiful. Perfect hazy golden color with a huge slightly off white head. I had to pour it into my pint glass 3 times the head was so large on a medium pour.

S. 3.5. The malt and alcohol smell is so strong it's hard to detect it is an IPA. It smells relatively good and earthy, just not what I expected.

T. 3.5. More of the same. Nice malt taste with a pretty strong alcohol burn. You can definitely taste the hops and there is a great bitter sting on the sides of my tongue.

M. 4. Pretty darn nice. Medium bodied with a high presence of carbonation but it is definitely working for me. It leaves a dank hoppy aftertaste.

O. 3.5. A very nicely made beer. I have had 3 now and will almost definitely buy another. I enjoy Uinta beer and west coast hops and the cost per abv is right in my preferred area. While it is not ground breaking or even in my top 5 DIPAs, I definitely recommend trying it. Drink responsibly!

Poured from a 750mL bottle into a St. Bernardus goblet. Bottled 11 June 2012.

A: Half a finger of head. Transparent yellow-brown. Shiny.

S: Smells great! Deep, citrusy-fruity with a tinge of bitter hops and definite sweetish malts.

T: Erm. Not necessarily my cuppa tea. Astringently bitter and alcoholic without being interesting. American hops are citrusy and bitter without being convincing.

M: Slightly better than mediocre.

O: Actually, it sort of grows on me, but I'm still not sure I'd recommend it. Still, would have again.

This beer is an amber color with a medium-sized white head. It had the prettiest lace I have ever seen.

Aroma of citrus and sweet malt.

Taste was mostly grapefruit and orange. A bit of caramel.

Hoppy, but not too aggressive.

Nice beer. I'm glad this brewery arrived in Maine.

Beer #68 in my great Utah Brew Hunt.

This is a very malty double ipa. What hop tones are there are salty and earthy and not very interesting. Overall, it seems rather muddled and undefined. And there is a boozy tone to it that seems a bit much. The verdict on this one: so-so.

A. A beautiful light cherry look. A good two to three inches of head which quickly receeds, yet leaves a foaM.m behind.

S. A very sweet, nutty smell. Refined, not overpowering.

T. Initially a fair amount of hopiness, with a medium body. A bit of a tart, barley wine taste.

M. Little hoppy after taste for a double IPA. A definite hint of alcohol, similar to barley wine.

O. Easy to drink, good bang for buck. A good beer to start the night.

Pours a hazy orange-ish to amber color with an off white head. In the aroma, some mellow orange citrus hops. In the taste, dry orange citrus and a a little boozy. A small hop bite and a medium bodied mouthfeel, with a dry hop and alcohol presence in the aftertaste. Big citrus hops, which are good, and a small alcohol presence, which makes it a bit too much.

Even with a gentle pour, this beer produced a beautiful inch of off white head. Soft citrus and piney aroma, the beer has a very wonderful balance of hops and malt. I would say a citrusy and vanilla prominence to the taste. I enjoy double/imperial ipa's and would say this is one of the best ones I have had. Very drinkable for 9.5 abv. A thick mouthfeel but very tasty and would go well with a host of spicy foods or a bold steak. The lacing is beautiful. This seems to go in contrast with other reviewers but i really enjoy this beer. I would say give it a shot if you can find it.

Whipped up head with more craters than dimples, easily over three fingers during the initial pour, loosely knit enough to settle down into an even thick coating across the surface, the lacing is ultra-sticky and remains in full sheets rather than thinner streaks. The liquid is a noticeably dark copper to amber color, stays transparent this notwithstanding, only the tiniest smattering of bubbles visible. The nose is thick and pungent, even if not the longest lasting, coconut custard, pine sap, candied orange peels, floral musk as well as sharper peppery and grassy notes, curiously the apricot, peach, pineapple fruit seems to get lost in the mix while in no way weak, ends with an earthy and close to peaty flourish. Full-bodied, verges on a foamy attack, only the herbal bite and overall bitterness slices away the foam to prevent suffocation by down pillow. The pepperiness takes it up a notch, more pith in the lemon to grapefruit citrus. By the mid-palate vanilla, coconut and caramel accents salve some wounds. Gets a little creamier as it opens into the apricot, peach, nectarine, fig fruits. Not very biscuity, some darker grains present. Mouth texture is sticky and resinous. Not aggressive per se, however, nothing to just pop and pour without some prep work first.

this is a well rounded beer, not a hop showcase but not too malty either. and you will not notice the 9.5abv.... this is a good drinkin IIPA.

pours a nice maple amber, reminds me of SN -- small head, but this brew sticks to the glass. mostly malts and piney hops in the nose, not a powerful aroma.

the taste is great. up front hop bite, oily sumptuous texture.... a malt forward brew but the hopping is right on. more of an apples and pears IIPA -- not a West Coast style brew... this beer is rich mix of flavors.

would buy again. UINTA is proving a very reliable brew house.

This beer isnt an example of what to exPect out of a DIPA but it is a great take on the style that I'm glad a friend pulled off the shelf. This was bottled 3 23 12 so I had it just short of 4 months old. Smell reveals that this is very strong in hops and sweets. It reminds me of a hop liquor truffle with toffee and caramel. Taste starts with a great bite from the carbonation and hop combination- a little nit of that citrusy hop. Then it becomes smooth with influences of raisin and toffee like sweetness. Swallows dry and creamy. This is a very flavorful and hefty beer. Would like to Have this again. Suggest to serve with company.

Poured into a snifter.

5.0 A: Clear light amber color. First pour yielded a sizeable head. A couple pours later I got three fingers of creamy off-white head. Retention is very good and plenty of glass covering lacing is left.

4.0 S: This is clearly a hoppy barleywine type DIPA. Big fruitiness including peach, plum, raisins, and figs. Tons of caramel and some toffee as well. Booze is detectable, but held in check. Hops are mainly flowery and herbal, but there is some citrus as well. Good blend of rich malts and hops.

4.0 T: This tastes a lot like DFH's 90 Minute. Rich caramel with some toffee, big fruitiness featuring those listed in the nose and emphasising plum and figs. Moderate bitterness, but on the higher end of the spectrum. Big neutral malt sweetness, but not too sweet. Lightly boozy.

4.0 M: Heavier medium to heavy body. Good moderate carbonation. Big creaminess which is a must for this approach to a DIPA.

4.0 D: I wish I had looked at the reviews before opening this. This beer is a two man job. Anyway, it's a solid malty DIPA. Good balance between malts and hops and not too boozy.

A: Reddish orange in color, moderate internal carbonation, pours a small light brown head, translucent

S: Moderately fragrant, strong elements of citrus and orange peel, some very mild herbal and floral notes, rounded out by a touch of alcohol

T: Quite similar to the nose, perfectly balanced sweet and bitter elements, heavy citrus peel and some coriander, extremely mild alcohol, flavorful

M: With such powerful flavor and alcohol content, very easy to drink, certainly lingering, though, and highly drying, still not uncharacteristic

O: A sturdy IPA overall, great flavor, nice look, and a respectable fragrance, definitely a dryer, but worth a try without a doubt

6 months of age on this bottle but the hop presence is huge on the nose. I believe the liquor store I got it from has kept it refrigerated so that should've kept it somewhat fresh. Brilliantly clear amber color will a huge sticky off white head. Sticky webbing. Big malt nose, lots of raisin oddly enough but lots of pine and grapefruit as well. Spicy earthy hops as well. Some subtle alcohol on the nose as well.

A very spicy and malty DIPA. Tons of pine and earthy spice with lots of caramel and pale malt. Some detectable alcohol. Flavors are blended into one concise sip which is odd for a DIPA this size but impressive. Carbonation is there but low. Mouthfeel is syrupy. This bottle has a big of age on it but it's been kept cold, the problem with a beer like this is it's price tag. Uinta makes great big beers but this one is forced to sit because of its high cost. Despite being kept cold i'm sure the flavor is affected a bit. None the less tastes like a big double English IPA with tons of flavorless malts and subtle hops. Kind of a trick show from whats supposed to be such a big beer.

First dissapointing brew from Uinta.

A. Clearish and a deep copper. A big tan foamy head with beautiful lacing. Slight bubbles.

S. Nice floral hoppy scent.

T. This is a nice appley taste with a floral undertone. There's a balanced bitter hoppy blend there. Very nice.

M. It has a bit of a sour taste at the end, but it is refreshing.

O. It's a nicely balanced IPA. This is on par with a 21st Amendment Brew Free or Die.
