Notes:
Detour blazes the trail for fresh and bold Double IPAs. Four varieties of hops combine to step up the flavor profile. A hoppy adventure that finishes dry. Big in alcohol and character.

Appearance - This poured a thick, hazy, brownish-orange in color with a good head.
Smell - The hop profile is rich and complex with a nice, bitter tangerine but the malts are overly biscuity for the style.
Taste - The hops are a little less pronounced at the taste but again the malts are huge and full of English-style biscuits.
Mouthfeel - This is a huge, full-bodied DIPA with good carbonation and a strong bitter finish in spite of the sweet malt balance.
Drinkability - It's basically the opposite of a session beer but if you like big beers give this a try.

From the corked, caged bottle dated 02/27/13. Sampled on May 26, 2013
The pour is a handsome amber-bronze with a long-lasting off-white foamy head. Great clarity.
The nose presents itself with floral, earthy hops but not in an overpowering way. The malt and yeast characters are lower on the totem pole but at the same time can be noticed vaguely.
The body is medium to bold.
This grows during the session starting out a little mild for a Double IPA with upfront sweetness in the wink of an eye followed by moderate hopped bitterness that lingers. But as I make my way through the 750 ml. bottle the hoppy character becomes the more predominant flavor. The alcohol is well-integrated and I didn't feel that 9.5% ABV until it was all done and in my head.
It is a Double IPA I could enjoy again.

750ml bottle poured into a large snifter. "Bottled on" 04/10/13, drank on 25 May 2013.
Pours reddish, clear, huge head, fades halfway quickly but leaves a lot of lacing. Smell is rich, piney, grapefruit rind.
Taste is bitter, lots of grapefruit bitterness, and some other bitterness that might possibly be described as oniony or garlicky. Slightly caramelly sweetness in the back.
Mouthfeel is thick and creamy, but still surprisingly dry. Overall, this is pretty good, and lives up to the name of "double IPA". Not the best...but good.

I picked up this 750ml offering (bottled27FEB13) today at Ayotte's for $7.99... Weather sucks today, so I detoured inside to try this...
Uncaged and decorked, some was poured into a small tulip for examination and enjoyment. It's a deep, clear, orangey-bronze color. Carbo is scant and scattered. The topping was frothy and fluffy, a touch off-white, and about 3/4" thick while slowly ebbing. Lacing left behind is quite nice and sticky. The aroma is easily detected from about a foot away, and up close it gets real resiny. Has some citrus rind and a bit of piney action, too. Body is solidly medium-plus and the liquid glides easily across the tongue.
It has a little sweetness as it hits the palate, akin to some tasty apricot marmalade spread on a bit of malty toast. Then it's hop time, as the piney, resiny, pithy lupes take over. There's a lot of hoppage here, with pineapple and grapefruit mixing together, but it's quite well balanced with the fruity sweetness. It is dry in the finish, and a touch of alcohol warmth is detectable. All in all, I'm liking it, and $7.99 isn't toooo bad these days... Prosit!!
