I think this beer gets the short stick as people looking for a walloping imperial stout rather than a true proter. A tall head leaves moderate laceing and the dark brew shows ruby highlights when held to the light. Chocolae malts and cofee are evident on the nose though understated. The flavor is the same with the smooth malt character finishing with just a hint of hop biterness. It is suprisingly light for it's color and goes done smooth and easy, a great session beer!

Black color with a thin foamy veil in the pint shaker. A little aroma of grain and burnt sugar.

Pleasant malty flavors with lots of dark roasted barley. Not so much of the charred taste. A little chalky in the mouthfeel with a modest carbonation. Nutty aftertaste and slightly bitter twang. A decent quaff with lunch.

Not bad for a low-alcohol porter. Plenty of flavor, just very light bodied. On tap at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Salt Lake City.

Appearance: Well it's quite dark closer to a very dark brown than black. The head is about an inch tall and is beige in color.

Aroma: Dark roasted coffee, faint charcoal, chocolate malts, light smokiness, Minor notes of dark fruit. Roasted hops with a floral dryness in the nose.

Taste: Smoky, chewy mouthfeel, dark roasted coffee, cocao. A chocolate malt sweetness with a twinge of milk sugar. Hops are roasted good and dark and a little bit of a dry finish.

Notes: Very drinkable and rather tasty a solid porter. Cheers.

Beer #14 in my great Utah Brew Hunt.

Wow. What an amazing porter. Beautiful smoky and roasted malt tones with a vibrancy that just speaks volumes. This is one of the better porters I have had in quite some time. The lingering aftertaste rests in my mouth and I don't mind how if it decides to stick around for quite some time.

Not sure what everyone else is drinking and rating. But hey, lucky me; sorry for you.

Well done, Uinta.

nearly opaque black in the glass with a foamy whitish head leaving a fair amount of lacing as you drink.

Aroma has a nice full cocoa scent overlaying the malt.

Flavor has the nicely toasted dark malt flavor, a little nutty and with the tasty light cocoa bitterness.

Mouthfeel is relatively light, nicely in keeping with the sessionability of this beer.

Over all this is a very good porter, very sessionable and more importantly very drinkable. This was a gift from some good friends who just returned from out west, I wouldn't mind at all if this were available to me all the time!

another surprisingly good 4% beer on tap in utah. this one pours a rich looking milk chocolate brown color with a really lacey light brown chocolate milky head with good retention. smells like a chocolate covered espresso bean thats been chewed a little bit. balanced and subtle despite the complex aromas. flavor features both chocolate malts, caramel malts, coffee, and a sort of marshmallowy sweetness. great texture to this one too, smooth and drinkable. body is a bit thin for a porter, but so are many of these 4% drafts. relaxed carbonation and a drawn out aftertaste that goes from coffee bitter to cocoa sweet wraps this one up rather nicely. overall a reasonable porter, highly sessionable.

Bottled on 6/21/2010

Look: Black and totally opaque with a 1/2 inch tan bubbly head and ok retention

Smell: Roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla, and oak

Taste: The flavor is a bit muted maybe due to the age but the beer carries some roasted malt and oatmeal notes. The oatmeal lingers for a bit

Mouthfeel: Thin body and medium carbonation and a bit prickly

Overall: Not a bad beer and this one would probably be better fresh as it stands the nose is really the only solid component

Mixed sixer picked up at the Bryce Canyon General Store (from notes)...

A: Brown; coca-cola head with some tiny bubbles (camping, so not as in-depth a description)

S: Chocolate malt and some light earthiness... nothing too crazy, for sure.

T: Chocolate malt; light roasted malts; a touch sweet toward the finish with some light, dry hop notes.

M: Kinda fizzy and thin; pretty lackluster.

O: Not bad - probably wouldn't have it again, though. Uinta's pale ales are better.

16 ounce pint - $6.75 at Taco Mac in Woodstock, Georgia.

Appearance: Served up a black body in the subdued lighting, though some very dark brown edges emerge as it is drank down. Thin beige-hued ring from a very, very generous pour.

Smell: Low grade, heavily roasted coffee, though not overly effusive. Some basic bitter chocolate, though, again, it's not overly effusive.

Taste: Roasty malts with flavors of coffee and bittersweet chocolate strike simultaneously. Brutally toasted bread crusts. Mild bitterness with a faintly earthy hop presence. Grows a bit thinnish, as a sip of store-brand cola washes in for the dry, roasty finish. A gnarled bit of burnt toast lingers in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium-low carbonation. A tad bit watery.

Overall: At best a very basic porter, lacking any gripping complexities, and falling far short of enjoyable.

Despite a nice chocolatey aroma and good color, the beer felt and tasted like the light beer of porters, as if they made a good strong porter and poured water into it. I had one out of a bottle and one out of a glass after it was recommended to me as better than robust porter (the local store was out). Definitely disappointed.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter a dark black color with a off white head. Smells of chocolate malts and a faint floral hop. Taste is chocolate malts with the floral a little more present. Feel is smooth and very lightly carbonated. Overall a nice smooth porter.

12 oz bottle pours a nice black color with a fluffy crown of tan foam. Retention is good and lacing is decent.

Nose is nutty and chocolaty with a touch of toasty caramel. All about the malts here with a little bit of yeast on the side.

I like this beer. The nutty malts are very nice and has just enough chocolaty sweetness to maintain a nice balance. The mouthfeel is a tad on the thin side, but appropriate for a 4%er. Just a touch of light fruit and some roast come out as it warms. I am surprised by the low grade this beer has. I would not hesitate to drink plenty of it on my next ski trip to Snowbird or Alta. A good drinker here.

12 ounce bottle from the beer of the month club poured into a goblet style beer glass.

A: Thick, dark and opaque that reflects a ruby shine with a bit thin tan head recedes quickly

S: Aroma of chocolate milk and roasted malts.

T: Beer starts with some initial earthy tones that gradually builds flavor profile to chocolate, roasted coffee and some nutty earth qualities. Finishes with a dry cocoa flavor.

M: Creamy mouthfeel and somewhat light bodied for such a dark beer.

D: If you are looking for a big, thick, dark beer, this isn't it. Nice session beer that you could easily have more than one, especially iwth the 4.0% ABV. Would pair nicely with steak or beef dish.

Review from BeerAdvocate magazine Vol. II Issue XI:

A hearty pour yields a massive mountain of tan head; there is clarity here, as it shows the deep brown hues. Pleasant aroma of chicory, light brown sugar and toasted bread. Super smooth with a moderate-sized body that holds a fluffy and semi-crisp carbonation. Dry maltiness has suggestions of slightly burned biscuits, unsweetened chocolate, light roasted coffee and chicory mix, nutty toasted husk and a dried grass. Hops are mild and simply help to balance. Yeast throws a small amount of fruitiness and chalkiness into the mix. There's a quick acrid twang in the drying finish, with some light charcoal.

Easy drinking all the way, lots of flavor packed into this small beer. While flavorful, this beer tries to be robust while still holding on to its semi-light character, staying deep within session beer territory. Proof that dark beers are not always heavy and can be very approachable.

Once again, great to see some brews coming out of SLC. This is my favorite flavor, dropped right at my door by, BOTMC, let's give it a whirl and see if it pans out. Popping the top i smell some coffee but mostly a deep chaulky semi-sweet chocolate smell. Pours to a nearly opaque iron river color with a foamy pillowtop head with macro bubbles inter-dispersed. Taste continues with the deep chocolate and espresso flavor that almost approaches Cuban coffee but more bittersweet than sweet. Mouthfeel is thinner than I expected, is this 3.2 beer? No but seriously, with the flavor that doesn't play in alot. A good porter lacking some backbone but, tasty none-the-less.

A - Dark color, some light makes it through around the edges showing a dark brown. Tan head that disappeared quickly.

S - Roasted malts, nice chocolate aroma.

T - Same as the smell but lacks complexity. It almost seems like they took the first runnings to make a good beer and then used the second runnings to make this. Roasted malts are good, but lacks any kind of backbone. They say delicately hopped...I would say barely hopped.

M - Thin and lacking body.

D - Better than drinking crap beer, but certainly not my choice. So weak you could probably drink it all night and barely get a buzz.

Is this a low cal Porter?

Appearance was dark brown with a very small tan head, no retention.
The aroma was so slight it was difficult to identify any specific, a very slight trace of chocolate.
Taste of roasted coffee and dark chocolate.
This was a flat light body porter.
Was disappointed in this porter, there are better Utah porters.
