Imported from my ratebeer.com profile - JAN 3, 2008
Pours light orange with minimal head, doesn’t have much of a smell... some wheat, maybe some hops and honey. This beer is very smooth and only lightly carbonated, very drinkable. Tastes very wheaty, with hints of yeast and honey, and maybe very slight hops and some metallic flavor. Overall very drinkable, refreshing, and doesn’t taste too bad, but nothing entirely special.

Picked this up at the Whole Foods on Houston St. in New York City last week, having never tried this before. I like unfiltered beers and this certainly fit that bill, in terms of appearance. As so many others have pointed out on here, this is not a true Hefe compared to its German counterparts and this beer certainly put the "Pale" into American Pale Wheat Ale, since that's what stood out the most to me.
This had a pretty typical pour to it, with a cloudy hue and decent amount of head. As opposed to so many other beers of this style, this was not as bright in terms of appearance nor taste. There was sweetness up front like bubblegum that faded into a Kolsch-like sourness in the back. The citrus, grass, banana, and clove flavors that I expected were not to be found here and the mouthfeel was weak because of the lack of wheat in this. No need for a lemon to cut this at all and the carbonation was nearly absent as well, even though this was light enough to be enjoyed without any bubbles to cleanse after each sip.
I bought a whole sixer of this and to be fair, I could have easily downed this one sitting. That's not because of the taste, but due to the low alcoholic content of this beer and how little I could feel it during my drinking session. This is not so much bad as just not true to form and fans of this style will be disappointed here. The bottle design and name of this brew are certainly unique but unfortunately, what's inside of the bottle just doesn't measure up to those attributes.

Beer #44 in my great Utah Brew Hunt.
Oh, the things I will do for the greater good. Like, drink pale wheat ales. Bleh.
This is actually pretty decent. Quite a full body and full flavor, though it seems muddled overall. And the carbonation is definitely way too high on this. It's attacking and biting on the tongue.
It certainly hits on the style parameters and is somewhat "there," but doesn't do it for me.

Served with a lemon as per the package instructions
A - Mostly clear gold body with little head or lace.
S - Relatively straight forward. White sugar, bright lemon cirtrus, touch of bready malt.
T - Skunky malt with a slightly sour lemon acid.
M - Thin with low carbonation, especially for the style

A-pours a cloudy golden straw color with a white head with average retention
S-lemon and wheat
T-hearty wheat flavor met with crisp hop bitterness, bit of lemon flavor in the background. Clean finish on the palate
M-light bodied
O-pretty much what i would expect from the style. Wouldn't seek it out again but would drink it if it was available

On tap at Sundance, served in a pint glass with a wedge of lemon.
While Golden Spike "Hefeweizen" is not a bad beer, it is fairly bland, boring, and middle-of-the-road. Surprisingly malty with a small amount of citrus up front, I get far more flavor from the pilsener malt than I do the wheat. It is actually pretty far from a Hefeweizen, and, despite the wheat, drinks more like a bland pale ale.
I wouldn't really recommend the beer. It lacks any of the character I associate with a hefe: no clove, no spiciness, no banana, almost no citrus, no brightness in the mouth, almost no aromas in the nose. In short, it's just plain boring.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a weizen glass.
Appearance: lighly hazy medium golden hue with a thick finger of frothy white foam and a nice effervescence. Good stuff.
Smell: malty with a mild wheat character and a light dusting of hops. Not too bad, and stylistically appropriate.
Taste: malty with a light fruity character up front; slightly citrusy but also with a hint of apple. Bitterness is quite low and hops aren't even as prevalent as in the aroma. An interesting brew.
Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation and a good creaminess. I like it.
Overall: this is actually a decent beer, though its style is oft-maligned. I didn't go into this expecting a German hefeweizen, and what I found was a mild but pleasing and refreshing wheat ale. Good stuff.
