Poured into a standard American pint glass.

A-Pours a borderline amber brown to medium amber with a thick off-white 2 finger head. The head stuck around for sometime and it left some sticky lace on the glass. The head eventually dissipated into a bubbly ring around the edges. It looks good!

S-Dominant malt character, with some citrus undertones. Not too much in the smell.

T- It's light, crisp, and flavorful for a pale ale. The caramel-toasty malt balanced the bitter hops in the aftertaste. For a lighter pale ale, it is quite balanced. There were also some light citrus notes that complemented the hops.

M-Light bodied beer with a full-bodied feel. Moderate carbonated feel, crisp and clean. A bit watery, but that is to be expected in Utah.

Overall, if your visiting the Rockies and you happen to be in SLC, try this ubiquitous beer. It is sold just about everywhere. It is one the best beers in the 4% ABV zone. It's a great brew for any time of the year, sessionable for summer/fall, drinkable in the spring, and warm in the winter.

I purchased this beer in Beaver UT while on the way to GABF.

A: This beer pours a deep amber with 1 finger very light amber head. The head did last an abnormally long time however, a left a good amount of lacing down the glass.
S: Nice aroma and flavor of caramel malt with a hint of citrus or British hop flavors.
T: Light notes of sweet caramel malt and a touch of citrus hops. Not bad for a low ABV easy drinking beer. Good session beer for sure.
M: Somewhat light body with a lightly slick but fairly watery mouthfeel. Carbonation is soft enough.
O: This beer is a good session beer with good flavor, low ABV, and not heavy at all.

This is a Utah favorite. This is definitely my favorite brew from the Rocky mountains and the Great Basin :) Pours amber, copper head, taste of dry hops, and caramel malt. Great and if I had to drink one beer for the rest of my life this would definitely be it. Try it next time your in Utah!!!

Review dated 1/9/2009, from 12oz bottle.

Bottle in Park City. Amber color with decent white head. Nice hop aroma, somewhat citrusy. The flavor has caramel malt and citrusy hops. Medium-bodied, maybe a little more watery than I’d like, but hey...you know...Utah, man.

Poured a deep amber color with fairly nice head. Smells of roasted malts, hops, and fruit. The taste is mostly hops and sweet, roasted malts. The brew finishes with a lovely malted caramel flavor. One of the better pale ales I’ve tried, mostly because the flavor is dominated more by malts than hops, which I enjoy.

A: Pours a deep amber with a rather thin head despite my rather rough pour. The head did last an abnormally long time however, a left a good amount of lacing down the glass.
S: Not picking up much. Light scents of caramel do poke through along with maybe a hint of citrus peel.
T: Light notes of sweet caramel malt and a touch of citrus hops. Not very potent flavors. I’ve had amber ales with way more hops than this. Very watery.
M: Thin body with a lightly slick but fairly watery mouthfeel. Carbonation is soft enough.
O: Pretty boring (bad) for a pale ale and beer in general. Not something I really want to drink.

A - Nice clear copper, near white 1 inch head that leaves to disk. Lots of cling lace.

S - Very mild malt and hops coming through.

T - On the malty side, very one dimensional. Hops make a sound presence, however.

M - Good carb, fine balance. Not terribly interesting, but ...

D - Low alcohol, very easy flavors.

This beer has a great copper hue.. A finger and a half of lacing.

The aroma is of pine notes and a bit of grain.

Nice firm hop bitterness, clean hoppy finish. Slight malt back ground. The hop bitterness lingers.

Mouth feel is great.

This beer is great on a hot summer day. This is one of my favorite pales out of salt lake.

I got this beer at a gas station in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Appearance- amber color

Smell- hops

Taste- hops, malt, nice flavor

Mouthfeel- medium bodied

Drinkability- I thought this was a pretty good beer. Good session beer only 4% alcohol, I thought it was worth drinking again.

Good color, good clarity, lace etc. . . aroma was lacking, not back, just nothing.

Taste, a standard pale. Refreshing, but will seem pedestrian to a hophead (or big fan of their BW like I am). Good caramel, not enough hops. Maintains a light play on the tongue though, doesn't acquire that earthy heavy wood feel that some APAs will when they aren't heavily/appropriately hopped.

Easy to drink, won't be offensive to anyone, just won't be something exquisite at any time either.

12 Fl Oz bottle, drank outside Bryce Canyon on 6th May 2010. The bottle was obtained (along with some other choice brews) at Ruby's Inn general store.

The beer was poured into my plastic toothbrush tumbler, it is all I had to use in the motel.

The beer seemed a whole lot better than the on-tap version I'd had a couple of days earlier outside Zion NP in Springdale.

The pale amber body seemed thicker and richer to look at and the off-white head stayed longer.

The aroma was hoppy and interesting and the taste was a good blend of hops and malts unlike the 'wishy-washy' brew from before.

A lot better experience than the tap beer, missed the good food though, only had a salad with cheese this time.

The beer pours an orangish-amber color with a white head. The aroma is malty with some fruit notes. The flavor is malty and grainy with a good touch of hop bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Clear golden-yellow color with disappointing head.

Superior smell with citrus hops and a sweetness in front, which translates into taste, albeit weaker than I hoped. I like sweet-biased beers with malt, and this one is good. I would call it balanced (with the caveat that I do like sweet malts).

Bit watery in the mouth, but drinkable--especially with the low ABV.

This beer seems to be all over Utah but instead of it being like a craft beer it seems more like a macrobrew in quality and taste. It has a decent clarity and gold color but upon opening the bottle up and pouring it the head was somewhat weak and the aroma smelled a tad skunky. Where it really seemed to fall flat was the taste. It had little character and drinkability was limited to one bottle. The malt came through but it had a soapy aftertaste.

Served in a Pint glass with little to no head. The slightest amount of lacing sticks in the glass. Orange/Amber in color with good clarity and no visible carbonation

Aroma is of crackers and toasted malt.

Flavor is rather bread/crusty bread like and has a lot of black pepper notes. Slight fruity esters and a mild hop finish. Pretty nice.

Carbonation tingles and brings the black pepper notes to life. Body is medium light and it finishes a little dry.

Rather drinkable, just not overly exciting.

A decent pale ale and one to have when in Salt Lake.

From a 12 oz bottle this poured a very clear gold with a small white head and good thick lacing. Nose of caramel malts with citrus hops. Medium mouthfeel. Flavor is a good balance between malts and hops, and finish is dry and lightly bitter. A very serviceable APA.

Poured from a 12 oz. brown bottle into a pint glass.
A: Nice amber/orange color, thin layer of whitish head that lingers, spotty slippery lacing.
S: Sweet little caramel sugars dart at the nose amid a blanket of spicy, bitter floral hops. Yum.
T: Good mix of hops and sugars, mirroring the smell. Bit of grainy flavors in the finish, but mostly caramel malts and floral/piny hops.
M: Bittery and grainy, good hoppiness and a bit of sweetness to balance it out.
D: Solid; tasty and refreshing and enjoyable.

This is one of the "smaller" beers that I've had, but it was also one of the best looking. This beer poured a deep copper gold with a billowing white head on top. Retention was superb, and there was a sticky, lacy mess all over the glass edge. Very nice. Smelled grassy and sour. Some hints of lemon in there on top of the grassy hops.

Very tame beer right away, but as I continue to drink, this beer gets more hoppy and more enjoyable. Very well-balanced with plenty of biscuity malts in there, all mixing and jiving with the slight hoppy muscle. Drinkability is extremely high, as the ABV is very low. I could drink these all summer long. I was very pleasantly surprised by this "little" beer. I wasn't expecting a whole lot, but it showed me a thing or two...

It is encouraging to see beer flourishing in this area, though the brewers are really doing it with one hand tied behind their backs courtesy of the laws governing alcohol content. This pale ale had nothing particular to commend itself other than being considerably preferable to an industrial beer. It also gave one a nice locavor feeling to be drinking it at the kind of event where most of the time the dreaded Heineken may be served as the high-class "import." Color was quite coppery for a pale ale, the nose largely of grain, very minimal hop profile, taste slightly bitter in the English style with a bit of maltiness.

Picked up a sixer at Wal-Mart (UGH!) on huge sale at $5 a six pack. I couldn't pass it up . Stubby bottle, 10/13/2008 date on the bottle.

A: Light copper color with a cream head, not much retention. Crystal clear, very filtered beer. Excellent lacing on the glass.

S: Earthy hops, slight caramel malt bill, slight plastic smell, which is really odd, never noticed that before. Pretty standard pale ale smells, only a little lighter.

T: Follows the nose nicely, nice pale malt characteristic, and a light earthy hop flavor, lingering malty aftertaste, big time tea presence. Excellent light pale ale. Very well balanced, seems a little watered down, but not too bad.

M: Not as thin as one would expect for a 4% beer. Nice carbonation. Somewhat dry, clean finishing beer.

D: This is an excellent session beer. One of my favorites since moving to Utah. All around good flavors and low alcohol, have consumed many of these in one sitting. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a session brew.

A-Clear Dark Amber, 1 inch head that dissipated quickly, Looks good
S-Grassy hoppy, slightly bready
T-Tangy flavor, watery, mild malt with slight roast flavor, mildly grainy
M-Thin and light in mouth
D-Nothing stopping me from drinking more but nothing jumping out at me making me want more.

Decent beer-girlfriend had on tap with a slice of pizza and was a fan, but maybe doesn't stand alone so well.

Pours a clear amber color with a small off-white head that fades. Minor lacing on the glass.

Aroma is a nice blend of caramel malts and herbal hops.

Rather weak caramel malt taste upfront followed by a pleasant herbal hop flavor and medium bitterness. Finishes rather bland and dry with a slight lingering hop flavor.

Thin body, mild carbonation.

Not difficult to drink, but would greatly benefit from a bit more malt character and a lot more body.

Rustic orange with a bronze-like glow. The three finger cap is pastel caramel in color; just about the hue one would expect given the beer that created it. The foam is sticky enough to deposit barely broken sheets of lace on the upper few inches of the glass. This is a darker, richer looking APA than one typically sees.

The nose is balanced. Translation: it isn't as hoppy as I would have liked. Given the color and the aroma, I'm guessing that a hefty portion of caramel malt was used in addition to pale malt. The hops are primarily citric with an earthy overlay. To my nose, that means a mixture of American and British varieties are present.

Cutthroat Pale suffers from UBS (Utah Beer Syndrome). Even with more guts and a bigger body, it still wouldn't fit my prefered blueprint for a beer of this style. As in the nose, it's caramel malty, citric hoppy and balanced to within an inch of its life. The problem is, neither side of scale is weighted down very heavily. An infusion of ingredients is sorely needed.

Some 4.0% beer from this brewery, and especially from the Utah Brewers Cooperative (Wasatch), manages to possess a decent mouthfeel. Why, then, can't the entire lineup? This one, for example, is thin and bordering on watery. I've learned to cut APAs a little slack, but I've cut Cutthroat all I'm going to cut.

The Uinta website tells me that Cutthroat Pale Ale is 'the state's #1 selling craft-brewed beer'. That's hard to figure since I've had quite a few better from that state. On second thought, it isn't all that surprising, since if the 'craft-brewed' part was left out, the #1 selling beer is probably Budweiser.

Thanks to Wasatch for another Utah brew.

A: Sort of a saffron color with plum highlights. Head is wispy at best an auburn hint to it.

S: Caramel, dirty hops and a little orange.

T: Begins with watered down caramel on the tip of the tongue. Like most of the Utah beers, its very minerally. This one is dry with a low level bitterness to it. Finishes with a touch of marionberry and unrefined malts.

M: Thin body, hard mouthfeel.

D: Not bad. A little boring. Oh well.

I tried this brew on a recent trip to Salt Lake City. It’s a clear, golden-amber colored beer with a moderately sized white head. The aroma is of floral hops, with a nice backing of caramel and toasted malt. It’s a much better aroma than I expected. A little grassy, with some resiny, pine-like hops. The hops really stand out in the taste, which is refreshingly bitter. Slight, caramel sweetness up front. The finish is very clean, with a lingering grapefruit hop quality. This brew is very easy to drink, and would make an excellent session beer.
