12 oz. bottle into a pint glass

Pours a deep black color with a one and a half inch light tan head. It falls to a quarter inch after a few minutes and retains well throughout. Lots of lacing left on the side of the glass.

Aroma is quite mild but there are coffee notes, dark chocolate, and good amount of peat smoked malt.

Taste is a mix of coffee and peat smoke flavors. Not very complex and quite dry towards the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium-light bodied, nice and creamy, very dry.

An interesting beer, but it just wasn't that good. It was worth a try if you like peat smoke flavor.

Pours a nice, dense, tan head that collapses to a soft, pillowy head with great persistence. Aroma is dominated by roasted malt which has a coffee-like acidity. Black. Starts acidic and with roasted malt. Moves into a medium-low hop bitterness as a slightly smoked characteristic builds with the acidity to make a very coffee-like finish.

Overall, I like this alot. It's a slight smokiness, and it is blended just perfectly off the toasted malt. Would like to see it a bit thicker, though. Maybe a touch less acidic. But, otherwise, the flavor is excellent.

Poured into an Olde Hickory glass on 1/28/13

Pours a seep, tobacco stained brown. The head was reluctant to rise at first, though it managed just over two fingers. The foam collapses to smooth retention and a solid sheet of lace.

The aroma is dry and brief. Notes of dark roast, semi-sweet chocolate and a little earth. Overtones of coffee beans. It takes a fair amount of opening up to reveal the smoked peat (it's more smoky than peaty).

On the other hand, the taste is mostly peat while the smoke is minimal. Tangy roast with undertones of dark grains. The middle has a decent spot of chocolate. Moderate, prickly hops. It evens out over time.

The feel is perhaps my biggest gripe, as it's high in carbonation for my liking. The body is probably a medium, maybe medium-light, but the carbonation makes for a staccato feel. The flavors are such I'd like it to stick around a bit longer.

Apparently I had this sitting in the fridge since last August. I'm glad I finally got around to trying it. It don't recall like an Irish Dry Stout more than this.

I always have a lot of expectation for a beer that refuses the penetration of light. This black offering comes from a style I have no experience with: Irish Dry Stout. I've had many stouts but I don't recall a category for either Irish or Dry. I like Russian Imperial stouts and choclate or coffee stouts. I certainly can pick up the "dry" quality of this beer - but the Irish escapes me - perhaps because I am unfamiliar with the style. What was immediately both present, overriding and persistant was the smoke. I've had beers with a hint of smoke, but this was overpowering. Last time I recall that smell was when I was going through very old, musky, burned out, wet wood buildings looking for salvage. Burned out carbon. Because I am not a fan of smokey flavors (other than from those of beef & pork briskets) - and I have had many "winter beers" favoring this smoke characteristic -I have yet to have one that I would ask for by name. Again - just not a fan - for those who like this characteristic - kudos. The appearance was very promising, the mouthfeel right on but the flavor too smokey.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Near black with decent sized head.

Smell: Smoky and sweet peat, very light roast. The peat actually makes the aroma a little too one dimensional.

Taste: The peat dominates here as well, with smoky and sweet qualities. Some chocolate comes through from the roasted malts, but not as much of the bitter notes that are typically present in an Irish Dry Stout.

Feel: Smooth and creamy medium sized body. Moderately low carbonation. Finish is only semi-dry. This is a strong mouthfeel... for an ENGLISH Stout.

Overall: So this is not really the Irish Dry Stout it claims to be. That's okay, it is still mighty tasty, even if the peat is a little too strong and clashes with the roasted malt.

This ebony brew pours rich and velvetty into my glass producing a tall dense mocha head.
Very aromatic with hints of roasted malts smoky peet coffee and dark chocolate. This beer is quite tasty too, it follows the nose.
Roasted malts are dominate here and richly so. Along with that you get some smoky peet and ash. I don't mind the ashen taste and feel at all if you consider how it tastes and the complexity of said taste.
Drinks smooth with a dry finish. It's good and well made and pleasing all around.

Pours jet black with two inches of light tan head, fine and fluffy, with good retention.

Smells of chocolate syrup and bready malts and oats.

Light cocoa, slighty toasty oats and hints of coffee.

Light to medium body with light tingles of carbonation.

A fairly decent light strength stout that still delivers on flavor, but a little average in the flavor. Nothing bad about it and it's enjoyable, but nothing to make it particularly more appealing than any number of other solidly good stouts either.

A- Pours a black color with a thin tan head. Head is gone fairly quick and becomes a very thin cap. Thin lacing is left behind.

S- Quite a bit of smoke, peat roasted malts and a touch of chocolate.

T- Pretty good amount of smoke, roasted malts, bakers chocolate and stale coffee.

M- Lighter side of medium in body and on the lower end in carbonation.

O- Ok at best not my favorite style.

Opaque brown with a decent sized fluffy tan head.

Faint smells of smokey peat and cola.

The flavors are charred malt and smoke. There's a dash of cocoa and dried leaves.

Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth. Easily the best attribute of this beer.

I liked this beer even though it's pretty two dimensional with the roasted malt and smoke. It had a lighter feel to it for a stout and was easy to drink.

Poured into my Bruery snifter from a 12 oz. bottle.

Very dark brown with a hint of red near the edges of the glass. Two fingers of quickly-dissipating light tan head.

Really smoky aroma, with a hint of peaty malt. The smoke is so strong it's hard to smell anything else.

The aroma doesn't lie. This beer is a roasty smokebomb. Nice peaty smoke flavor that tapers into a bitter coffee malt flavor. Something else interesting in there too. Maybe smoked fruit? Or smoked fish? Did I just taste smoked fish in my beer?

Thin, dry mouthfeel.

Overall this is a really interesting beer. I didn't realize how smoky it was going to be until I first smelled it. Smoke beers aren't my favorite, but this one had a nice sweet balance to it. Then came the fish.

Drinking this beer reminds me of sitting around a campfire roasting fresh fish and tart apples. A very interesting beer indeed.

A: Color is a very dark brown with a slight translucency. Forms a decent sized dark tan head that reduces down to a thin surface coating and a thick ring around the edges. Some moderate lacing.

S: Heavily roasted malts and a little peat, but the aroma is actually rather subdued.

T: Starts off with heavily roasted malts with cocoa to a lesser extent. Then a significant peaty smokiness comes on hard and heavy. There is a slight vegetal quality to the smokiness, giving it a sort of cigarette-type flavor. Finishes with a mild charred coffee bitterness.

M: Medium bodied with lighter carbonation and a mild bitterness. Dry on the finish.

O: An interesting take on the style. I would imagine this one might be enjoyable if you like smoked beers, eventhough the smoke comes through in a bit of a less than normal sense. Still a decent beer though.
