Notes:
Originating in the farmhouses of Wallonia in the French speaking region of Belgium, Saison (French, "season") was brewed for field workers during the harvest season. Red Rock is proud to present a modern version of this once endangered style of beer. Moderately hopped, this refreshing ale boasts a complex style of fruity aroma and flavor, some spiciness and a hint of tartness.

500ml bottle with a label that nicely illustrates the four seasons courtesy of Wasatch. Thanks John! Poured into a Bruery tulip.

A - Pours a bright golden color that immediately brought lemons to mind. Excellent clarity and extremely pale even for the style. Two fingers of fluffy white head lingers for a couple minutes leaving thick webs of lacing as it falls to the surface.

S - Quite grainy on the nose up front...lots of cereal grains, a bit biscuity too. Layered on top are some pungent saison spices and yeasty aromas - cinnamon, nutmeg, lemons, a bit of pepper, cloves, fruity esters, hints of wintergreen, doughy yeasty aromas in the background, low hop bitterness.

T - Quite a bit drier than the aroma would indicate and a good deal cleaner as well. Dry biscuity and bready malt base, a bit yeasty, a touch tart and distinctly citrusy with a sharp lemony note. Hop bitterness is noticeable, crisp and a bit more intense than I expected from the aroma and lingers into the aftertaste. Spices are actually not very noticeable, black pepper stands out, but the intense clovey, sweet and herbal aromas don't come thru with much intensity in the flavor.

M - Thinnish medium body with a strong carbonation that is quite lively and prickly on the tongue. Rather dry with a crisp hop bitterness that lingers. Not a particularly spicy saison, perhaps even fermented a bit too clean.

O - I'd definitely classify this as a saison but perhaps with a bit of a lean towards the Kolsch style. Fermentation seems a bit too clean for a saison, but the result is still a very solid and good tasting beer. Dry biscuity malt base that is a touch lemony, mild spices and very refreshing. Seems like it would be an excellent summer beer. Glad to have tried this one.

Picked up at Bier Thirty tonight for $5.. Pricey for what it is. Poured into my HotD goblet.. 2 finger white head.. great lacing and retention.. the brew is polished straw golden.

Nose is both strongly phenolic and slightly lesser estery... peppery/light clove.. pieces of pink bubblegum... fruitiness shows more as pear and underripe apple.

Flavor mirrors the nose almost perfectly.. a bit of vinyl/plastic notes show on the finish with warmth.

Light body with a strong carbonation.

Overall, IMO it is much more of a BPA ... I get the saison qualities, but BSPA rings more true in my mind/palate.

Beer #26 in my great Utah Brew Hunt.

Oh my! What do we have in here? Do we have some brett? Whatever yeast was used, we've definitely got some funky going on, in a Berliner Weisse kind of way. Citric tones are there as an accent. Tartness, through and through, but not overdone or overbearing. Refreshing, yet biting. Chewy, yet smooth. I call this an outstanding beer. Especially considering the style. This may become my go-to beer for Utah. That is, after I try the however many there are left to try that I haven't yet.

500ml bottle - $5.98 at Sherlock's in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours out a cloudy, golden body with a large-sized, white, actively foaming head.

Smell: Most sniffs present crisp wheat and tart lemon juice, but, otherwise, you get notes of licorice, coriander seed, oranges, coarse-ground pepper, and chewing gum.

Taste: White wheat and pilsner maltiness, a small, small bit of honeyish sweetness, then a sip of tart lemon juice. Accented by coriander, Mandarin orange, snippet of fresh basil, black pepper, bubblegum. The spicy characteristic settle, allowing the lemony tartness to spring back up. Nearly spritzy, spicy, lemony finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Moderate carbonation.

Overall: It's a pretty good saison, actually. Nice range of flavors, decently carbonated, and, thankfully, not a big, slick, boozy disaster like so many American saisons.

Had this at the Downtown location. Received a 500mL bottle and a pint glass.

3.5 A: Very lightly hazed dark yellow. Two fingers of frothy white head. Retention isn't great and a small ring of lacing is left.

3.5 S: Good amount of herbal and floweriness. Lightly grainy malts. Grapefruit fruitiness. Good.

3.5 T: Grainy, big herbal, earthy fresh spring. Light bitterness and grapefruit.

3.0 M: Medium body. High carbonation for the style and lacking creaminess.

3.5 D: This might be closer to an herbal pale ale than a saison, but it's still a good beer.

Strong, malty aroma has a fruity overtone that is mostly apple with a hint of banana. It pours a clear golden-yellow with a decent white head that leaves only scattered lacing. Tasty flavor has a malty core and a fairly but not overly sweet fruit overtone and hints of butterscotch and hoppy bitterness. Firm texture has a good amount of fizz. A decent saison - if this is your preferred style, probably worth seeking.

A drier and lighter style of Saison.

Clear golden color in the tall tulip, excellent lacing. Well carbonated on the tongue. A suggestion of appley sourness at first sip. Some of the scratchy Belgian yeast flavors. Fruity with a tart finish. The typical Saison non-hoppy bitterness in the aftertaste. Aroma is on the sourish side with some malt in the nose. Foam to last sip.

Would be an interesting quaff with its moderate alcohol and clean light body. From your friendly Utah State Liquor store.

500 ml bottle from the Utah system poured into my goblet.

Appearance: A clear pale yellow with a wonderful craggy perfectly white head. It settled after a little while to leave nice lacing the whole while. Carbonation streams up the middle look very nice also.

Smell: A little yeast phenols, funk, spice, earthy hops and malt all rolled up together in a happy little five-way. None seems to be dominating.

Taste: The taste follows the nose. The malts is light while the hops and spice go along for the ride. The yeasty phenols are a little more noticeable in the taste while the funk is less so. This is a clear saison. The finish is very nice and dry.

Mouthfeel: The body is on the light side, while the carbonation is strong, exact for the style. Again the finish is very dry but the lingers just long enough to savor.

Overall: An approachable saison. Maybe would be appropriate for someone experimenting with craft beer trying to broaden their horizons. A BMC drinker might say it is sour. Will get again. BM me if you want to trade for it, it should be readily available.

500ml Bottle

Poured into a chalice a pale cloudy yellow color, nice carbonation, nice one-finger foamy white head, with a big oil slick left in the middle of the glass. The nose is malty, yeasty, nice little hop note, coriander, fruity, with a nice little touch of spice. The taste is very nice, malty, yeasty, nice touch of coriander/fruits/spice. Medium Body, this is not as hot as other Saison's, which I'm liking here. Slight dry/tart finish. A very tasty Saison, recommended.
