Style | ABV
American Porter |  6.20% ABV

Availability: Year-round. bottle (876), on-tap (56), cask (3), growler (3)

Notes:
This hearty, mahogany colored ale is brewed to evoke the dark, full-bodied ales that were a favorite of dockworkers and warehousemen (hence the name “Porter”) in 19th century London. It is a good bet that when Dickens’ Mr. Pickwick sat down for a pint, we would have been drinking an ale much like our Robust Porter. This is a smooth and very drinkable beer, characterized by its well-balanced malt and hops, plus subtle notes of coffee and chocolate.

A: Very dark brown, almost black with a two+ finger caramel color headwith very nice retention and lacing.

S: Very strong dark roasty malts and espresso notes.

T: Roaty, campdire like smokiness, dark very bitter chocolate and espresso with a hint of oatmeal or cream.

M: Full, smooth, and creamy.

D: There is so much going on here that I want to keep going back for more. The low ABV makes it easy to have a few of these.

The beer poured a very dark chocolate-coffee color with a 3F head in a stein.

Aroma: very strong vanilla-chocolate.

The mouth feel is moderately carbonated.

The taste is complex-especially for a 5.7%ABV beer. Chocolate, lemon.

Hoppy, and pungent in the finish.

Overall a solid porter.

Aroma: Big chocolate, cocoa powder, espresso notes up front. Clean fermentation character. Roasted malt profile is big and bad.

Appearance: Jet black pour with a khaki sticky head that laces and retains well.

Flavor: Big roasted profile continues. Lots of cocoa, espresso, powdered chocolate notes, and hot chocolate flavors. Malt profile is balanced by earthy hop bitterness. Balance is nearly even with the roasted malts and hop character playing off each other. Finish is clean and dry.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, slight roasted malt astringency. No alcohol heat.

Overall impression: Wow. Really impressive. Loved the roasted profile. I think this is the best Smuttynose beer. Well done!
