About 6 oz. (from a 22 oz. bomber) poured into a small wine glass. From notes.

A: Pours a very dark brown color body. The head is a three finger light tan color with impressive retention and lacing.

S: Strong roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, and dark fruit - a textbook smell, but a great one.

T: This has one of the most immensely bold roast profiles I've ever encountered; actually this is one of the most in your face tasting beers I've ever had. The huge roastiness does transition to chocolate and licorice after a while, while the finish sees a surge of dark fruit to go with the big roast. Wow, this has so much flavor, and it has solid balance, to boot.

M: This has a medium body with good carbonation and dryness. The aftertaste is loaded with long-lasting dark fruit and roast, and the alcohol isn't very noticeable on the palate and body.

O: Here's the thing. It's amazingly flavorful, but there's so much flavor that it hinders its drinkability somewhat. Put simply, it's an incredible beer that makes me unsure I could polish off a bomber of it solo. Split this one with friends, a little goes a long, long, LONG way. I'd still get this stuff again and again without hesitation.

Picked up this beer in Totowa, having never had this before and seeing how highly rated it was on here. While this style isn't one that I've had very many examples of, this was a great beer that was solid in every aspect of it with a well-hidden level of alcohol. This was certainly strong but at the same time, surprisingly easy to drink and savor!

The pour was a dark brown with a light mousse-like head and a bit of sediment at the bottom of the 22 oz. bottle. It was also bottle-conditioned this year, leading me to appreciate the extra touch that's lacking by so many breweries. Lots of raisin and currant in the nose, which were also quite aggressive in the taste but countered nicely by a strong roasted mouthfeel, and just the right amount of warming alcohol. Underneath that was a good amount of bitter chocolate, vanilla extract, and pumpernickel that gave this beer a great body. The currant was the part that stuck around the most and as to be expected, the carbonation was light enough not to detract from the flavors or to help them fade after each sip.

This was as strong as needed to be, but I wouldn't want it to be any weaker as well. Polishing off one of these was easy and given the time, I'd easily buy this again. There's no doubt as to why this is the highest-rated beer from Smuttynose and for any Porter, Stout, or Dark Ale fan, this is must-have. Really great stuff!

A: Looks great. Pours black with a dark brown head.

S: Dark chocolate and french roast coffee. A bit of dark fruit as well.

T: Roasted coffee and rich dark chocolate flavors hit the palate first. The roasted malts add a touch of bitterness and earthy notes. Hint of booze on the finish.

M: Rich and smooth. Finishes dry.

Overall: Really impressed by this beer. I was expecting a lot and was not let down. Looks great, smells delicious, bold flavors. You can't ask for much more.
