Notes:
S’muttonator is a tasty mixture of German ingredients & good ol’ fashioned New England tenaciousness. Our brewers take 30 hours to brew a single batch of this traditional Double Bock. Take your time & enjoy its rich, malty & deceptively smooth flavor.

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber.

Very nice, murky deep mahogany/copper color. Very attractive. Sheet lacing which doesn't really stick to the glass due to elevated ABV.

Some bread/malt in nose, but not as prevalent as in some benchmark versions.

Taste is very traditional, although a bit sweet, almost cloying. Also, there is an odd taste in the very finish--a little bit metallic?? Not too off putting, but I had to drop the rating a bit, as this is not the norm for a doppel.

Mouthfeel is both smooth and full, classically true to style.

Overall a very nice American doppel, although not exactly on style. IMO, not enough bread in the nose and that odd finish. Still, another good attempt at a classic style from the brewers in Portsmouth. Good job!

Steve

This review is based on a goblet quaffed at Rustico Ballston, which lies a few miles outside of Washington, D.C. It looks real nice with a semi-translucent copper body – still pool of beer that is void of carbonation and lacing (though a frothy head will appear if the beer is stirred). The nose is somewhat basic with mild hints of honey, grass and bananas. Upon the initial sip, there is a sweet blanket of caramel, molasses and brown sugar. That said, this is not a cloyingly sweet beer; the body is rather light with some doughiness tippling the palate.

At 9% abv, this beer could have been a booze bomb; however, I thought it to be very quaffable and inviting. But those of us who know anything about this style – one with its own season in Munich (Starkbierzeit), are well aware of an underlying potency. This strong beer should not be taken for granted.

Vintage 2011

A: Pours a caramel-amber with a big bubbly head of beige colored foam on top. Bubble action in the body. Pretty clean body. Unique for a Double Bock. Lacing will tell the story. Lacing almost nonexistent.

S: Sweet aromas. Toffee. Butter. Some dark fruits -- prunes.

T: Dark fruits and sweet malts. Crisp. Subtle booziness. Not bad.

M: Smooth and creamy. Nice carbonation.

O: Nothing too special. It is a big beer, but it's largely forgettable. Unless you really like Double Bocks -- you can pretty much pass on this.

22oz bomber: This one pours a fairly clear, dark amber/mahogany color. There was about a finger of a khaki colored head on it that didn’t linger long but left some lacing. This one has a nice nose. Lots of malts, yet there isn’t much sweetness coming through. Caramel, dark fruits are the main components. Maybe some toffee also. The taste is excellent. A hint of sweetness, tons of malts. Faint roasted malts. Smooth. Overall an excellent doppelbock.

A - Poured nicely. Had a solid finger thick head. Now that it's settled there is a nice foamy layer that is lingering. It has a great mahogany, almost rosey color when held up to the light.

S - It has a very malty smell. I can't help but thinking of the smell of the woods thawing from winter. Does that sound kind of ridiculous or what? I like it.

T - I'm picking up oak, and peat right off. It finishes fairly bitter.

M - This is a very rich beer.

Overall I enjoyed this one quite a bit. I love living 25-30 minutes from the grocery store, but being able to pick up great beer at the local general store up the road.

Poured from the bottle into a tall pilsner style glass. Bottle conditioned in 2011.

Super dark copper red, with lots of burnt brown sugar color. Head is soapy and light tan in color with still quite a lot of staying power even for some big bubbles. Slightly cloudy, and fairly hard to see through.

Nose is just great doppelbock malt. Sticky malts and toffee, with hints of licorice all over. Light brown sugar and whole wheat toasty bread. Just great and solid.

Palate hits with a bit of fusel alcohol and boozy character, but still manages to feel somewhat crisp and brings all the classic dark malts into play. Rich toffee but with a very light palate. Very clean finish with airy dryness, and a light almost pilsner crispness. Slightly gaseous, but with all the hints of toffee and licorice you could want. Subdued sweetness.

Overall it's pretty darn solid, it's nose reminds me of classic Ayinger, but a very different flavor profile. It's still a real good doppelbock for sure.
