Corked and caged pint bottle uncorks with a pop and pours an opaque dark brown - nearly black - with a thick bubbly light brown head. head drops within a few minutes. Nicely laced.
Scent is chocolatey and roasty to start, and it wafts to my nose as soon as I uncork the bottle. On further inspection there are coffee and chicory notes and the scent of rye grain.
Taste is of chocolate and coffee. Roasted notes. There is a subtle smokey flavor but it is very unobtrusive. The rye flavor also is subdued. The grainy and spicy rye notes can be found but do not call attention to themselves.
Body begins lovely, creamy and soft but somehow ends just a little disappointing; somewhat thin and almost - though not quite - watery.
Overall a good beer which a lot of people should like even if they are not big fans of rye or smoked ales. Since I love rye and rauch style beers I was looking for something a bit bolder and the presentation of the bottle, as well as the price, made me expect a bit more.

Poured into a nonic pint glass.
The appearance was a nice dark brown close to black color with a short little eggshell white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace. Lace seemed to follow into the beer, no clinging.
The aroma had some rye - floral and spicy with some penetrating milk to dark chocolate sweet to bitterness rounding it all out. Invasive clean cocoa powder follows suite. Subtle coffee.
The flavor mildly took in the coffee to chocolate to blend somewhat with the floral and spicy units of the rye. Did a pretty good job. Aftertaste was somewhat sweet with a touch of bitterness and a mild roast.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it - there's a lot going on with this one which I can understand how it could get distracting on one's palate. To me, yes, there's some palate wrecking capabilities in this one. Carbonation did feel fine. ABV felt appropriate.
Overall, as a rye stout, I can see what Smuttynose did and they did a nice version of this. I'd have again.

A: The beer is essentially jet black in color—only traces of red are visible at the bottom of the glass when it is held up to a bright light. It poured with a finger high tan head that died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of chocolate and roasted malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of chocolate malts with bits of roast and hints of spicy rye towards the finish; these get a bit stronger as the beer warms up.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is a nice stout, although I would have expected a little more in the way of spiciness from a "rye stout".

375ml cork and cage bottle poured into a snifter.
A: Black. Khaki colored head retains at a half inch. Wispy and spotty lacing.
S: Brownie batter, chocolate chips, Hershey's chocolate syrup. Char/roasty edge. Berries. Earthy/spicy rye.
T: Deep carob and unsweetened cocoa flavors. Chocolate sauce. Roasted malts ride up with lots of woody char and black coffee acidity. Coarse and spicy rye lays a foundation. Green, oily, and bitter hops. Big char and rye on the finish.
M: Medium bodied. Sharply scrubbing carbonation blasts an already airy and creamy texture right off of the tongue. Full and silky.
O: Not for the faint of heart, but this is a solid beer. The coarse and spicy character of the rye is allowed to shine through and build off of an already great and roasty little stout. It has its own sense of identity and it's nicely balanced.
