Notes:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and “pompions.”

In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Bottle poured into standard nonic.

A: Pours a hazy orange color. Very cloudy. Virtually entirely opaque. A moderate white head sits on top but dissipates quickly.

S: Typical "pumpkin, cinnamin, and nutmeg" on the nose. Very standard for the style.

T: Taste profile begins with malt sweetness and pumpkin. Cinnamin present in the middle. Definite all-spice, and a good deal of natural pumpkin flavor as well. A very pronounced thrust of pine bittering hops on the back end lend some great character.

Not nearly as sweet as many other examples of the style. And I'm digging that about this beer.

M: Light and sticky. Great dry finish. Carbonation is maybe just a tad low, but not by much.

D/O: Very high. The emphasis is on "beer" in the style "pumpkin beer" here. Definite spices of the season, which is nice, but a good malt backbone and great hop profile are the stars of the show here. I'd buy this by the case.

Pours a cloudy amber orange with a one finger foamy off white head that fades quickly into a tick ring with moderate lacing.

Aroma of clove, cinnamon and just a hint of pumpkin spice.

Taste is very spicy with a floral hops. This is a very spicy pumpkin ale with just a slight hint of pumpkin. Leaves a very bitter after taste.

Mouth Feel was light leaning medium body with moderate carbonation. Crisp and very spicy, smooths out some as it warms, a little sweetness creeps in.

Overall not the top of my list for pumpkin ales, this is definitely the spiciest one have tasted.

Undated 12 oz bottle served in a pint glass. Slightly hazy amber color with a small but remarkably durable off-white head. Spotty scraps of lace are left on the glass.

Aroma: a bit too soapy/yeasty/musty, and has an out of place floral note. Pumpkin pie spices evident but not overdone.

Taste: excellent combination of beer, pumpkin and spices, with a fine sweet/bitter balance that starts mildly sweet and ends lightly bitter and earthy. Nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice linger on in the aftertaste. The spice load is significant but not over the top, allowing flavors of squash, malts and hops to shine through.

Mouthfeel: medium carbonation seems spot on; medium body; very smooth.

O: Despite an unattractive aroma, Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is one of the best pumpkin ales I've ever had. Wish I'd bought more than one!

12 oz. bottle, with bottle reading best before 03/11/2013, so I am a little late on this one, but I'm not gonna cry over it. Got this 6 pack on sale at my local beer store for $7.99. My second beer from Smuttnose Brewing Co., and I am a fan of pumpkin beers, so let's see what's up.

Poured into a Firestone Walker pint glass.

A - Semi-aggressive pour yields about two fingers of fluffy doughy off-white / tan colored head. The body is a light orange color reminiscent of pumpkin puree, with lots of bubbles rushing to the top, and a fair amount of sediment floating around. Fluffy, scattered lacing.

S - The spices take the front seat here, mostly all cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and nutmeg. Any actual pumpkin smell is firmly in the background. Some lemongrass & earthiness coming through, along with some faint floral yeasty notes.

T - Very lightly bodied, and lightly flavored also. Spices are again the most prominent taste here, but even they are faint and lacking in depth. Earthy pumpkin and some bitter hop presence.

M - Feel is smooth and creamy, with a bitter hop finish. Lightly bodied. Slightly over carbonated, in my opinion.

Overall, it is a simple, easy drinking pumpkin beer, but not one I would likely try again. There are many other far more flavorful / complex pumpkin beers to be had. I would maybe consider trying it again this coming autumn when it is released fresh.

Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale ---3/5.

Appearance - pour begins a clear and bright amber. About two-thirds of the way, a clump of sediment hits the flow and clouds things up. Nice creamy manila head, good sticky lace all around.

Aroma - primarily cinnamon and clove, complements of pumpkin pie spice I imagine.

Taste - malty start, typical spices are nice and festive. The swallow turns rather bitter rather fast. Chasing out all sweetness, the aftertaste and finish are kind of harsh. The end stays dry and harshly bitter, not really what I would consider to be in the style. Not that a pumpkin beer can't have hops, but these dominate the malty, spicy side and undo the beer.

Mouthfeel - average body, plenty crisp and refreshing.

Overall - I have an outside thought that this bottle may have a rogue strain of something in it that is turning it dry and bitter some five months after Halloween. Best before 1/31/13, I could try a fresher sample this season.
