Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and “pompions.”

In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Clear, copper color. One finger thick, white head. Aroma of pumpkin spices (cinnamon dominates) and malt. Taste is similar. Decent bitterness. Drinkable.

Great example of a pumpkin ale. Amber gold appearance with aroma of pumpkin pie spices but the flavor is fantastic! Best melding of spices with the mouthfeel of pumpkin. Outstanding.

As far as pumpkin ales go, it was ok...

It was definitely good looking and sweet-smelling, but that's where it drops off. Mouthfeel was overly carbonated and the taste was not as malty as I prefer. It was decent, just not one of the better ones I've had...

Look – Copper color with a hint of orange. Light foam.

Aroma – Very light pumpkin. Pumpkin light. Maybe. Very little scent. Perhaps that’s because it’s natural.

Taste – The taste is carbonated with a light pumpkin feel. Like the nose there is no spices to be found. Honestly, no pumpkin.

Mouhfeel – Light-bodied with a good amount of carbonation. It is easy to gulp this one down, but that’s due to it not being rich or flavorful.

Overall – Light pumpkin beer on the nose and a whole lotta nothin’ on the taste. Not bad tasting, but that doesn’t mean it is good.

From a pint can into a draught glass. Pour had a floofy head of light beige foam with a clear, warm golden amber colored body with mild effervescence. Scent is what one expects from a pumpkin ale -- plenty of pumpkin and a nice dash of spice (nutmeg and clove are most evident, at times cinnamon too). Taste has a surprising degree of bitterness to it, but that lines up well with the "recipe back from the colonial time" vibes. Feel is on the medium side with a bit of a watery quality and a pleasantly bitter pumpkin aftertaste. Overall an enjoyable fall beer that avoids trying to be a pumpkin pie in a glass.

Love our neighbors to the north of Boston. Smutty does an excellent job of walking that line between beer and pumpkin spiced latte. A lot of pumpkin beers can taste artificial and overwhelming, but this is subtle. Subtle to the nose when you lift and subtle in taste. The pumpkin is accompanying this delicious beer by not stealing the show and provides supporting flavor. A beautiful beer in presentation too. Nice dark copper tint with a frothy foamy head. A nice Fall warmer.

Look – Copper color with a slightly hazy body and two fingers of white head

Aroma – Subtle aroma of pumpkin……and that’s about it. No spice presence to be found. Smells pretty neutral.

Taste – The taste is more flowers and potpourri than anything else. The pumpkin was subtle on the nose and is nearly non-existent here. Like the nose there is no spices to be found. The back end finishes with almost a generic macro lager taste. There’s nothing offensive here, but also not much to write about.

Mouhfeel – Light-bodied with a good amount of carbonation. It is easy to gulp this one down, but that’s due to it not being rich or flavorful.

Overall – Simply being inoffensive does not a good beer make. Mild pumpkin beer on the nose and a whole lotta nothin’ on the taste. Not bad tasting, but that doesn’t mean it is good.

Nice copper color with little to no head. Definite nose of pumpkin there which you can't say too often about pumpkin ale which is normally overwhelmingly spice forward. The slip here is how boring the palate is. It's too carbonated and tastes faintly of metal. The pumpkin and the spice are in the background but the dominance is the can. Finishes equally poorly.
