Trouble with card reader, cashier warned me of a chance double charges, and when it happened owner refused to refund and told me to file a dispute with my credit card company. After another trip into the store with my credit card statement showing the double charge I was told by employees there was nothing they could do, the owner would tell me to dispute, and this “has been going on for quite a while ever since the new card readers were installed”. Shop at your own risk! Terrible customer service!

The second beer store I stopped in during my turkey day trek to KS.

Qual- Had some decent brews on the shelves but not anything that made me giddy with excitement. Just a very good selection of craft.

Service- The guy behind the counter was quick to help me out and point me to the single bottle area to build your own sixer. Novel idea for KS but lacking a bigger selection.

Selection- The selection was very good for a bigger chain in KS. Had some decent brews and probably serve a large portion of the KU kids who want something more than BMC.

Value- Was right in line with prices I was expecting.

Was around the corner at 23rd Street brewpub and wanted to grab a bottle of something good to take west with me for my hotel room later that night.

Sign outside said something along the lines of "beer for the masses" which I felt was a poor indicator of things to come.

Was hoping to get one of the Odell's special release and was shut out. Actually struggled to find anything exceptional in their small craft beer area. Settled on an Allagash DeProof (sp?) collaboration for $14.

Had to wait a couple of minutes at checkout because nobody was there.

I'm not sure that the beer store standard is in Lawrenece, but this is not the place if you're looking for anything other than the mainstream.

Mass Bev has a seemingly small dedicated craft/import beer area, but there are hundreds of fantastic options. I think they carry the most Belgian beers in town, so if that's what you're looking for, stop by here. They have a big bomber selection and a pretty good offering on U.S. craft six-packs. My biggest complaint is their mix-n-match section: it's utter chaos. There is no order to it, so you have to hunt through about 10 shelves to find what may or may not be there. They don't group beers by brand or style, and it's also hard to tell how long something's been sitting on the shelf. If you want to mix-n-match, hit up Jensen's where you can pull them out of fresh, cold six-packs. The service has been really good so far with friendly workers. Prices seem comparable, though I can think of a couple beers they had priced higher than other places.

Had looked up this bottle shop before heading to visit family in Lawrence. Was excited to finally get the chance to pop in and see what Mass Beverage had to offer. I found some interesting bottles, but was limited by only being able to bring a few back in my suitcase. I was expecting a bigger selection, but what they had was more that adequate. Very nice selection of bombers and singles. 6-packs were average in selection. I found the best bottles to be either bombers or 750's. They even had a few 2007, 2008 bottles sitting on shelves. A great spot to find an interesting beer.

Great beer store. Unfortunately, it's in Kansas, so the selection is a little limited due to the outdated prohibition laws/taxes/etc. and resulting reluctance of distributors, but the guys at Mass Bev are doing more than just about anyone else around to change that. Some of the most knowledgeable folks I've met when it comes to beer (wine, too), and are more than happy to do anything, from showing you were the glassware is to shooting the breeze about the latest releases and seasonals. Also the most reliable stock of just about anywhere I've been - and if they don't happen have something, they're great about letting you know when they will next.

in short: clean, organized, expansive (not expensive), friendly, and knowledgeable. My go-to place in Lawrence.

I think when writing a review about a bottle shop in the bible belt you need to keep in mind that you are not going to walk in and find a six pack of Trappist Westvleteren 12.

That being said, the owners and managers of Mass Beverage are always on the lookout for the very best beers, wines and spirits that they can carry.

Personally I slant to the "beer snob" side of things but the entire inventory at this place it massive. They have a great build your own six area, and an even better single bottle selection that covers the higher end stuff.

let's face it, anyone can sell booze! It's knowledge and customer service that really sets Mass apart. Whether you are looking for a good sixer for a session or something for your cellar, Andrew and the gang at Mass always have just what you're looking for!

I just moved to Lawrence and have taken several trips to Mass before moving. I finally decided to write a review after a couple recent visits and spending some time with the manager.

So what can I say? For Kansas, this store is pretty killer. The beer is fresh and taken care of. They are currently working on getting some uv filters for the lighting over the beer as well. There is a whole wall of coolers ranging from macros to micros and imports. Then on the back wall there is a nice selection of micros and imports with a good mix your own six area.

Service is great. I've been a few times and everyones been happy to help me find whatever I'm looking for. It wasn't always beer related, but they staff is pretty good. As far as beer goes, well I don't usually ask many questions if any. But I met up with AA the manager over there and we BS'd about beer for a good hour and he filled me in on the state of beer in Kansas as well as the new developments etc. We talked about what we've got stashed away and will most likely get together one day and share some of our gems. Pretty cool if you ask me.

Selection is great for Kansas. I've not been to Goebel's yet, but I'm going next week. If I had to guess, I would say that the selection here is one of the best in the state as they are continually seeking out new beers to bring in. They are really working hard to make it a reputable beer stop. I'm definitely happy with the selection and think I'll find myself adjusting just fine.

Value is definitely reasonable. Pretty much what we've all come to expect to pay for our brews. Kansas won't allow them to sell anything below cost, so I don't think you'll ever get any killer deals unless the guy at the counter just thinks something is too expensive to be right. Today I bought a J.W. Lees Vintage Harvest and it rang up $6 and the guy was shocked. Well that can't be right. I told him it was and went on my way. So I guess to a degree they don't all have the best knowledge of the product. But nonetheless, I stand by what I said.

A great stop if you're in Kansas, or even worth coming over from Kansas City if you're headed to Free State as well.

I wanted to check out this place as it is a recent addition to Lawrence, and I've been in Denver for several years. What I like about this place is the selection of single bottle. I found a Rochefort 6 single and snatched it up toot sweet. Nice warm selection of singles and compared with the other places in Lawrence, I like this place the best. A bit cluttered, not a huge selection of beer (like Cork/Barrel), but there are more "obscure" brews. Reasonable pricing. Service is simple.
I recommend stopping in if you're in town.

Update: First time stopping in since I heard the beer guy left. And the selection is not as good. Many empty spots on the shelves, and the local shelf (2 actually) was filled with Boulevard Pale Ale. Good beer, but that's all the locals? Free State, Tallgrass...hello?
Some old stuff just scattered around. Not as good. Probably won't go back

I would have to give Mass Beverage a slight edge as the best store in Lawrence. It has a typical selection for Lawrence with a good dose of Colorado beers (Avery, Great Divide, Fort Collins, Left Hand, Odell, etc). But I would give it a slight bump up the rankings because it has a build your own six pack section. The only bad thing is that they only give you a price range on the singles (between $1.19 and $1.99). They get new beers in much sooner than some other stores in the area. The prices are comparable to other stores in town and even the KC area. The Belgian/import section is decent but can't compare to Lukas in KC, MO. All in all, it is a very good beer store in Lawrence.

Mass Beverage is Lawrence's only large liquor store that is locally owned, a big plus for me. The only downside is that they are located on the opposite side of town than me, but whenever I'm in the area I stop by. Walking in you'll notice, as its name implies, it is a pretty big store. Stocked with seemingly the biggest wine selection and a strong liquor selection for the town. The beer selection is 80% refrigerated with about anything that you can find in Lawrence will be there. The room temp selection has some nice finds, most in single bottles. Service is always friendly though help isn't the best (see Jensen). A great looking store, always well stocked, reasonably priced with good sales, and good service. If only they allowed breaking up 6ers....
