Grabbed a 4-pack of this when it first came out. Saved the final bottle for a review. 12oz bottle poured into a snifter.

Pours a jet black. No light penetrates this one. Small tan head. Nose is rich with booze, chocolate, roasted coffee, grape, vanilla. Hints of woodsy aromas on the finish.

Body is decadent and full. Rich velvety feel with a touch of carbonation on the back end. A nice malty backbone, with vanilla, chocolate syrup, a little booze, black licorice, dark fruits.

This one was rich and tasty. The alcohol snuck up on me at the tail end, but this one was one I enjoyed through and through. I hope to see this around often, as I would like to have stock of this one at all times.

A - pitch black with a thick, persistent tan head. Head speckled with darker brown flecks.
S - smells a bit thin. Burnt coffee and chocolate. Licorice, dark fruit. Not overwhelmingly good.
T - wow. Rich, caramel, artisan dark chocolate and cacao nibs. Coffee flavors. Much better than the nose.
M - rich and luscious. Thick. Ominous.
O - SN knocks it out of the park on this one (as usual). The smell is a bit lackluster, but everything else top notch here.

$20 for a growl fill on this ? mad props to Copper Mine Pub in N Arlington NJ

eyes...
devilishly black, totally opaque, lacing ? legs? yeah... got that, the head retreats pretty quickly but easily comes back with a quick swirl-o-rama, the head itself is a nice dark cocoa tone, this looks impy...

nose...
burnt wood left outside, the spicy note of licorice, bitter chocolate, hints of smoke and molasses,
hints of mint like toothpaste

taste etc...
initially pretty smooth but man this sucker is heavy, like drinking a cannon ball, woah this thing is thick and weighty, this is big boy territory right here... the first blast is sort of the sweet end of things with the malts parading the molasses across the mouth, then the after bomb drops... we're taking a trip to flavortown folks (can I say that without comping Guy Fierri ?).. anyhoo, the aftertaste slapped me so hard (insert one liner here but it probably involves my mom), you get some deep dark euro chocolate that teeters on barelywine-ish flavors but never loses the RIP style, the booze is there but really lends itself to the mix here.

verdict?
luckily I have my bro and his current girl to help me out with this growldog, cause otherwise I am taking a trip to passoutville. damn, this is one deep dark sucker, maybe not my fave RIS but it is bold, any RIS fan needs to check this out, it might be the spanish fly to your.. well..

Reviewed from a 2012 bottle. Poured into a glass.

A - Pours a deep brown with ruby highlights. Appears black as motor oil once in the glass. Thin mocha head with no lace.

S - Strong roasted malts, chocolate, and espresso.

T - Roasted malt and bitter chocolate coat the palate. A slight hop bitterness in the finish. The alcohol is very well hidden.

M - Heavy bodied, thick and very smooth. Low carbonation.

O - Just like most of what Sierra Nevada does, they have set a standard for the style. When I think of an RIS, this is exactly what I expect it to look, smell, and taste like. Just a perfect example of the style.

Appearance: black as the deepest depths. No head to speak of, just some mocha brown bubbles that disappeared immediately. Super viscous, even more than I would expect for a 10.2% beer. Lots of alcohol legs. Lacing of brown bubbles around the rim.
Smell: firewood smoke and cinders, chocolate, coffee, charred oak.
Taste: woah, it honestly tastes like a campfire. Dark chocolate, smoke, char and coffee. I've had smoked beers and smokey beers but none have ever tasted like this. Sure there's some smokiness but it actually tastes like charred wood in a good way.
Mouthfeel: on the full side of medium.
Overall: totally unique. I've never tasted a beer like this, especially one that isn't barrel aged.

12 bottle into an oversized wine glass, live review...

Ap- dark dark brown (basically black) with a 1/2 inch light tan colored had that has great retention. Poured about 10 minutes ago and there is still a layer on top and a great rim around the glass.

Ar- chocolate, coffee, molasses, burnt grain, dark fruit and a faint smell of alcohol

T- smoky roasted grain hits me first followed by some cocoa flavor. The coffee and alcohol hits on the very back end.

M- thick bodied, creamy, perfect carbonation for this style, and the alcohol warms on the hold.

O- another winner from SN. IMO this may be the best beer I've tried from them. At a really good price point (typical for SN) I will try to stock up on this stuff before its all gone for the season.

Poured into a snifter, this is very dark, thick, and viscous. The smell is powerful with some traces of roasted grain, graham cracker, dark chocolate, alcohol, and piney hops. Initial taste is very sweet with some dark chocolate and molasses. More graham cracker and roasted malts round it out with a slight bitterness is left at the end. The alcohol is masked very well, keeping this very drinkable. I'm pretty happy with this one, it's definitely a very solid RIS.

I think my friends at Narwhal Brewing have some sort of lawsuit against this beer so I'm not sure if that makes me a traitor. I'll live.

Thick, viscous, dark brown pour spews forth a thick, sticky head. Room temp despite being in the fridge for two days do lack of power and hurricane Sandy. Ok retention leaves a few foamy polka dots. Polka dots, polka dots, polka dots afro.

Dark roasted malt and bread crust jumps out of the bottle before I even pour Narwhal. Lots of chocolate too. Mocha would be an appropriate descriptor.

Bottle label says I should expect dark roast coffee and bakers cocoa. I'm not disappointed. Big beer mouthfeel but still kinda soft and supple. Again, mocha goodness.

Like most Sierra Nevada it's not surprising or different, it's just really good. I was drinking this and my wife was drinking Founder's Breakfast stout and I liked my beer better if that says anything.

$9.50 for the 4 pack, bought locally.

it pours black with a 2 finger head of tannish foam and leaves the usual excellence with the lacing.

The smell is of cocoa and roasted malt with some light notes of coffee. Err...maybe not so light notes of coffee. Good either way.

First sip in and it starts off, for me, as being very sweet soon overtaken by roasted malt and coffee that add a nice bitterness. There's plenty of the ample alcohol in the taste as well meaning a lot of warming. It finishes on the bitter side thanks to all that roasty goodness.

Full bodied, lightish carbonation, very smooth mouthfeel. On a day with the temps in the 60sF, not so drinkable but when the temps drop, the drinkability of this IS will rise. I'm bloody sure of that.

A big thumbs up to SN's bold new Imperial Stout!

Edit Nov 8, 2012:

Poured from 12oz bottle into my tulip.

A-Has a deep black color with great tan head. Retains a nice lacing

S-Columbia roasted coffee.

T- Has a pure chocolate taste. Pure chocolate has an extreme bitter taste that is awful, but this is kind of nice and not as strong. I can tell this is a higher alcohol beer. Kind of hot, but not too bad. Then again I like kind of a strong presence of alcohol.

M- What a great mouthful. Can really get the full effect of the bitterness of this beer. Bitter being an ok thing with this beer. The mouthful brings me back to that Columbia or strong coffee taste and smell.

O- A really nice beer. Fantastic to sip on. Very smooth and easy to drink even though you can taste the alcohol. Looking forward to seeing how this ages.

A - Pours an extremely deep black hue, with a thick, creamy sepia head. Lacing/retention are mild.

S - Smell is of roasted espresso beans, bakers chocolate, and vanilla.

T - Taste is of rich, velvety-smooth chocolate malts, with notes of caramel and molasses. Finishes with mildly bitter espresso notes. Incredibly well balanced overall between malty sweetness and hop bitterness.

M - Full-bodied, and velvet-smooth, with light carbonation.

O - Overall, a fantastic imperial stout, and one I wouldn't hesitate to return to in the future. Sierra Nevada did a stellar job here!

Had a growler filled at Green's Piney Grove in Columbia, SC. Poured into a tulip glass.

A- Pours thick black, with two-fingers creamy mocha head from a vigorous pour. No light gets through here; the head sticks around for a while and leaves lots of spotty lacing as I drink the beer down. This is a pretty RIS.

S- I get lots of booze on the nose, along with a bit of piney hops and dark, bitter chocolate. Hints of roasted malt and coffee here and there.

T- A little hops bitterness on the front end, quickly followed by roasted malt, bitter chocolate, and a little coffee. The 10.2% ABV comes through as well. The Narwhal follows all the standard RIS notes; it's not terribly complex, but it is tasty.

M- Thick and creamy, a tad short of outright syrupy, with just the right amount of carbonation for the style. It has a fairly dry finish with a bit of alcohol burn in the throat.

O- Sierra Nevada has proffered a great little Russian Imperial Stout. It's not the best RIS out there, but it is a great value and I'd put it up there almost with Stone's RIS. I might try picking up a 4-pack of bottles so I can age this and see how it develops into next year.

2012 12 oz. bottle that pours a deep, black body with a two-finger dark tan head. The head settles into a nice cap and leaves streaky lacing on the glass.

The aroma is typical of a RIS, but a bit on the light side. Some roasted malt, a bit of chocolate, some dark fruit. Nice, but not complex.

The flavor steps it up a notch. Very nice blend of flavors: roasted malt, dark fruit - especially raisin, chocoalte, light coffee, and licorice. Excellent flavor balance.

Very smooth mouthfeel, medium to thick in texture. Nearly no notice of the alcohol. This is a top-notch RIS. Highly recommend.

Dark malty smell with a hint of coffee.

Sierra Nevada Narwhal Russian Imperial Stout. Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, Chico, California. At last, after 30 years, an imperial stout from Sierra Nevada. Is it any good? Is there any doubt? Let's find out.

On tap. My second keg of the stuff, finally taking a moment to sit down and take notes on it.

Black as sin, under a lush, creamy brown head, leaving lace. Beautiful.

Aroma: plenty of cocoa, espresso, molasses, anise. Deep stuff.

Taste: Floods the mouth with thick, viscous, lush dark malt. Anise sparks up and leads the pack of the flavors found in the aroma, chocolate second, smoke and char are in their, too, amid espresso and the like. There's a fierce tug of war going on between bitter and sweet in this (plenty of hops below the massive malt.) Layers upon layers, wave after wave, intriguing and delicious. Vast, complex, richly rewarding.

Full-bodied, long, lush malty finish. With dark delight after dark delight. A sure hit for the stout fanatic. If you don't dig this, my friend, there's something wrong with you.

Although one thing I'm not entirely keen on is this: I can't think of the name of this beer without thinking of "Rock Lobster" by the B-52's.

A - poured a dark coffee color with a thick, dark one-finger head.

S - not as much nose as the color might have represented, but coffee and chocolate were detectable.

T - a tiny bit of phenol up front, but the coffee and dark chocolate take over in the aftertaste.

M - above medium-bodied with a short lingering aftertaste. Very pleasant.

O - I'm beginning to like this genre more and more. This is one of the better offerings I have recently. Will partake again!

2012 bottle
Appearance: Motor oil. Dark, coffee head.
Smell: Hints that this drink is going to be strong, alcoholic, and have a note or two of coffee and chocolate.
Taste: Alcoholic. Strong. Light chocolate and coffee. Maybe some grape.
Mouthfeel: Motor oil.

This is a great example of the Russian Imperial. Watching it pour into the glass is both daunting and tremendously inviting. It really does look like thick, black syrup or motor oil. The smell provides the alcoholic warning that this is going to be a strong drink, yet it doesn't smell like cheap vodka/overly alcoholic. The taste is altogether strong and very powerful. It is chocolate, coffee, and maybe some grapes drowned in delightful and tactful alcohol. I will get this again and I'm aging my other bottle.

Bottled 11/3/12 @ 7:35AM!
Tasted 1/14/12
12oz bottle into tulip glass

A – Pours a near opaque jet black with a thin medium-dark brown head. Leaves adequate lacing. Looks good for a RIS.

S – Coffee dark roasted, bitter dark chocolate, and a ton of black licorice on this one. A little bit of fresh cream and milkiness to it. No alcohol comes through here.

T – Pretty subdued for a RIS. No charcoal briquettes in this one. Good mild dark chocolate and coffee notes. The licorice and cream come through again but they are on the back burner of this complex brew.

M – Good carbonation, not an overwhelming amount of it, it helps bring a nice dryness and compliments the big dark malt profile.

O – A great RIS, not burnt and tarnished like some others. Not sweet but has nice licorice and chocolate notes. A solid offering, just wish it wasn't so darn hard to find on shelves.

Dark brown pour evolved into a near pitch black opaque liquid in the glass, with ruby highlights. The head was quite small in size, but it left some awesome khaki lace. The aroma of the beer showed off the roasted malts, with the smells of coffee, toffee, and chocolate. The taste was an extension of the smell, but with amped up intensity. The coffee taste was thick in this beer, with a bitter, astringent finish. If I let the sip linger in my mouth, some powder cocoa notes crept in. I usually dislike "Imperial" stouts that have runny, weak mouthfeel. Luckily this was not one of those namby pamby beers. The body was as thick as they come. Sierra Nevada has delivered another awesome product to the mass market.

Straight pour from 12oz pry-off bottle to a 25cl Duvel Single tulip; bottling date of October 5, 2012 (“2279209 : 46”) printed in white ink on the shoulder of the bottle, making this beer just over six weeks old on the date of consumption.

Appearance (4.0): Body is black as night—no surprise there, but there’s just absolutely no light passing through. The head is a dense two fingers of dark tan-colored foam, which dies down at a reasonable pace. “Dark tan” doesn’t do it justice, though—there’s milk chocolate out there lighter than this shade of brown. Modest lacing and moderate head retention, but both decent for the style.

Smell (4.0): Just roasty as hell—not in a charred wood kind of way, but in a French Roast coffee kind of way, or like dark chocolate-covered espresso beans. Picking up notes of molasses, anise, bitter, dark chocolate, some alcohol vapor, some smooth oat character (seems to me, anyway). Really nice nose on this bastard.

Taste (4.5): Not as bitter or charred as the nose might indicate—but not overly sweet in any way, either. Very satisfying chocolate and coffee notes, mainly a drying bitterness that accompanies very dark chocolate along with the modestly charred, very bitter but deeply flavorful character of espresso beans. Some burnt multigrain toast fleshes out the malt body, leading into a somewhat bitter finish that hangs on and continues for a while. The hops add a surprisingly clear citrus pith-type bitterness along with a somewhat bright citrus fruit (think mixed orange and grapefruit juice) flavor under the roasty malt body. Huh. Was not expecting that, but it’s quite nice. Damn, this is really, really good.

Mouthfeel (5.0): Very full-feeling with a thick, oily body that coats and paints every surface of your mouth and throat. Has that drying, vaporous feel on the finish that comes from the high ABV, but it’s not unpleasant. This kind of forces you to sip—it makes me want to exhale and take a couple of breaths after each sip before I take another, which for this size and style of beer, I really appreciate. Carbonation fits the style very well, never prickly but full and lush with a filling, foaming character on the way down. Holy hell.

Overall (4.5): To be honest, this is quite a bit better than I was expecting, and I was already expecting that Sierra Nevada would do a pretty good job. Turns out, they did an excellent job. This is a full-bodied, full-flavored, but attractive and pleasant-drinking imperial stout with a couple of unexpected and very welcome turns here and there. I’m not into most aged beers, but I’d be willing to bet this would be a good candidate. Outstanding, and a job well done by Sierra Nevada.

12 oz bottle poured into a snifter

A- Pours syrupy and as black as night. Almost no head to speak of but the head was a deep brown color. Impressive alcohol lacing.

S- A boatload of roasted malts, a slight dark chocolate. A big hop bitterness. A touch of alcohol.

T- A big crisp bitterness up front. Followed up by an absolutely massive amount of roasted flavors. Really lingers on the tongue to the point of being smokey. The beer definitely has a big chocolate flavor and feel which mellows it out and adds a whole new level of complexity. This is a hoppy stout, there are strong underlying notes of citrus and a lot of pine. Very dry and roasted aftertaste.

M- Big and thick, definitely a sipping beer. Almost no alcohol presence, it is hidden extremely well. Dry aftertaste. Really sticky.

O- This is an incredible imperial stout. One of the best non-barrel/aged stouts I have had in a good while. It is also priced incredibly well and is available everywhere. Definitely get some and make sure to keep some aside for the years to come.

Poured into a chalice, color is solid black, head is light tan - this is great looking stout.

Smell is big roast, chocolate, espresso, coffee grains, dry and sweet balanced in each sniff.

Taste is similar to that smell strong roast, espresso flavors, lots of chocolate undertones and coffee grain dryness. very solid bitterness to balance its strength, very hard to believe abv.

Mouthfeel is a little drying, probably the amount of bitterness to balance its strength, but not a hinderance to the flavors.

Overall, very great tasting brew - sierra nevada does a great job in the bigger beer categories, loved this one to follow holiday sweets.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a very dark brown that is very close to black. A creamy, mocha colored head sits on top. Sheets of lacing is left behind.

S: Dark, slightly bitter chocolate and roasted malt appear first in the aroma. A light and delicate hop profile provides a pine-like finish. Mild dark fruits (plums, raisins) come through as well.

T: Similar to the aroma with dark chocolate and roasted/burnt malt. The hop profile makes a similar appearance. More sweet chocolate comes through in the taste along with. A slight bittering effect finishes it off with some mild dark fruit.

M: It has a body that is on the heavier side and a creamy, yet slightly oily feel. A small amount of carbonation lets the flavors coat the palate.

O: This is one delicious RIS. A great example of the style and very easy to drink considering the high ABV. I'll be sure to pick up some more 4 packs while this is still around.

Bottling date: 10/12/2012.

A: An aggressive pour into a standard pint glass produced about half a finger of espresso creama colored head that was very dense. The head is fairly robust and lasted through about half of the glass and left a good lacing. The beer is a midnight black, and light will not even think about passing through it.

S: The aroma is a rich blend of strong, dark roasted coffee, unsweetened chocolate, and roasted barley. There is also some earthy hops making its way into the mix.

T: The taste begins with a big shot of strong coffee along with unsweetened chocolate and roasted barley. Very quickly bold, earthy hops and then some spicy hops join in for a west coast flair.

M: The beer has a heavy and full body that is very smooth and creamy. It feels thick and leaves a slick coating. All-in-all, it has a very satisfying feel.

O: A top notch imperial stout. The coffee, chocolate, and roasted barley flavors mix well together and provide a solid backbone to balance the earthy and spicy hops. It is a fairly complex tasting beer, but each element has its own characteristics, and together they create a bold and pleasing imperial stout.
