12 oz. bottle from Best of Beer Camp 12 pack, last beer of the 4 to be consumed, poured into Dead Guy shaker pint glass. Note the bottle indicated 9.2% ABV.

Half finger brown head, slow rising and quick dissipation, resulted in thin ring around edge of glass and thin broken layer on top of dark brown almost black body, no visible carbonation. Coffee and cocoa nibs in the nose, neither very dominant, some dark chocolate, floral hops with a wee bit of citrus notes in the nose. Taste is mocha-forward, quite a bit of bitter coffee in the middle, bitterness on the back end.Interesting mouthfeel, well above medium, a bit chewy, good effervescence, coating finish though fairly dry due to the oatmeal. Interesting beer, wondering how a bit of cellaring will effect this. I guess I'll have to find out.

"This big Oatmeal stout is midnight black in color-with a big, roasty, mocha-like aroma. It has a silky body from the use of rolled oats, and a round and lasting finish. Perfect as an after dinner treat." Brewed in the style of an American Double/Imperial Stout. Available as part of the Best Of Beer Camp 2012 lineup 12 pack variety mix.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a Sierra Nevada tulip snifter. Served north of 58º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a crisp foamy cream brown head over a near black body. Retention is average, lacing is light and streaked. Decent appearance overall, head quality is an obvious shortcoming, especially considering the ingredients in tow for this beer. 3.5

(Smell) Aroma contains copious amounts of roasted, chocolate malt and oatmeal grain for a mild syrupy sweet character. A subtle hop selection provides a touch of herbal flavor but a combative bitterness to balance out the aroma. The aroma is similar to an export stout with a touch more residual sweetness and body. Doesn't smell like it goes for too much. Aroma is very inviting. 4.25

(Taste) Flavors of heavy roast malt, cocoa nibs and earthy, herbal hops mesh together to create a bold flavor. Oats thicken up and smooth out the mix and embolden the potency of the flavors. Suggestions of licorice and a pinch of char give a medium earthy punch to the dry, roast finish. Certainly a great deal more potent and flavorful than a standard, run-of-the-mill Oatmeal Stout. 4

(Mouthfeel) Balance is equally sweet and bitter with a great deal of hop bitterness. Body is medium/heavy for the style, heavy overall. Carbonation is a touch excited- a little too much so for a supposed oatmeal stout. Alcohol presence is medium, accentuated somewhat by the bitterness and not concealed by the oat character. A mellow, slightly dry finish with a roasty character. A pretty nice mouthfeel. 4

(Overall) I don't have many complaints about this beer, although in terms of style, it's a bit heavier in depth and character than implied in an Oatmeal Stout, swinging to more of an export stout or perhaps a light-bodied Russian Imperial. The oats provided a mild thickness, but not enough to truly thicken this beer to what it needed in body. A roasty, mildly charred malt profile, bold herbal and earthy hop profile and mild spicy finish, this beer is great on its own merits! 3.75

12oz bottle from 2012, poured into a Gandhi-Bot tulip. Thanks, Drew!

A: Pitch black body under two fingers of fine light-brown head that rededes at a moderate pace and leaves plenty of lace. Excellent.

S: Pleasant, well-balanced aroma of dark chocolate, lightly-roasted coffee, and herbal hops. A nice hint of licorice. Solid.

T: Everything from the nose, with the addition of a spicy touch of booze on the finish. The interplay of coffee, licorice, and hoppiness is lovely, but the aftertaste is a little rough. Quite good overall.

M: Medium body with lots of lively effervescence. Perhaps a little too bubbly for the style, but enjoyable.

O: Very nice stout. Not one I'll be seeking out again, but I'm really glad I got to try it.

Sierra Nevada 2012 Oatmeal Stout is a black ale with a chocolate brown overtone. The thin, shiny, brown head becomes a film. The dark, roasted aroma has a touch of toffee to it. It is soft, smooth and full bodied. It leaves the mouth a little chalky. The full, dark roasted flavor is like dark chocolate. The bitterness leans toward juniper and lemon peel. It has lots of taste that's well balanced. This stuff is just great. I used some in my black bean chili.

A: Pours a clear yet opaque jet black in color with light to moderate amounts of gentle visible carbonation at the surface and some light amounts of cola brown highlights. The beer has a finger and a half tall dense creamy mocha head that very slowly reduces to a medium patch of medium thickness including some larger bubbles, a very thin film covering the majority of the remainder of the surface, and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of roasted malts with some light hints of oats and chocolate.

T: Upfront there are strong flavors of roasted malts with some light notes of dark chocolate and oats. There is a light amount of sweetness along with a touch of anise/licorice in the finish. Some light hints of alcohol and light bitterness as well.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth with just a hint of alcohol warming in the finish.

O: Slightly lighter in the body than some others in the style as well as the relatively well hidden alcohol make this one drink a lot smaller than it really is (surprised that it is 9% ABV). Enjoyable but I could only really have one during a single session.

Beer Camp #45, Oatmeal Stout, pours an opaque black, and it is capped by a dark brown head that provides plenty of lacing. Dark flavors of mocha and chocolate lead way to darker fruit flavors like cherries and plums. The flavor follows the same dark flavor profile. Roasted malt, coffee, and just a touch of molasses mix with dark fruits and a bit of booze across the palate. The malt adds a bit of creaminess in this full-bodied, moderately carbonated ale.
