3.55/5  rDev -6.1%
look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: Pours a golden color with exceptional clarity. Not a lot of carbonation seems to be prevalent. About 3/4" of eggshell white head forms, which has okay lacing and retention.

Smell: I get some bready and biscuity malts. Some lemon and orange zest in there as well, with very minimal hops; perhaps a touch of florals in there.

Taste: Lots of bready malts on the palate, along with some citrus notes, mainly orange and lesser lemon zest. Some light noble hop character on the back end.

Mouthfeel/Overall: Over light bodied but not quite to medium, with low but still apparent carbonation. Not bad. Overall, a decent steam beer. Nothing offensive, but nothing to make it stand out a lot either. Reasonably well done though.

Reviewed from notes.

Pours out an orangish-golden color with light amounts of hazing and a two finger head that lasts for about a minute and a half, leaving behind minimal lacing on the glass. Medium body and carbonation levels, with a touch of crispness to the texture.

Smells of light cereal graininess and a touch of herbal hopping, that's about it for the nose. The flavor is a bit stronger : I get a biscuit sort of malt tinged with a bit of sulphur, plenty of grassy, herbal, and hay hopping with an earthen / light apple skin garnish on the finish. Drinks easy, yet complex enough to be a sipper if you want it to be.

This sticks pretty well to the style. A little tangy and bitter with some mild spice tones. This is a good execution of a style that I don't ever seem to really appreciate. Even though this is nice, it still isn't my cup of tea. Good job on overall, though.

Note: I reviewed this on 5/8/11 under the old listing for this beer before everything was fixed.

Best of Beer Camp #8: California Common (Nothin in Common)

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint. Bottled on 1091 (April 1, 2011)

Appearance: Clear golden-amber with initial frothy white head, leaving slight lacing behind.

Smell: Biscuit, cherry and citrus (lemon and orange) predominately. Light caramel and spiciness.

Taste: Somewhat sweet malt backbone of cherry, toast and caramel. Tastes like a German lager, but fruitier and with more citrusy hops on top of the malt backbone. Not much bitterness; just a spicy (noble?) hop kick.

Feel: Moderate carbonation, medium body, semi-dry finish. Really smooth but somehow slightly boozy.

Overall: Overall, it seems a little too malty and boozy for a California Common. As a result, it comes across like a bigger, fruitier German lager. This is not really a bad thing, as it is quite tasty, but I expected more.
