My wife and I were at Heorot in Muncie, and I wanted a nice Doppelbock. Last time we were there, they had Celebrator on tap, which was incredible. This time, they had it only in bottles, and no doppelbocks on tap.

The bartender recommended this instead, saying, while not a doppel, at least it's a bock.

Well, he brought me the pint, and I drank it. And loved it. I usually don't like lighter beers, but this was good.

Color is light/medium yellow/orange. Flavor is light, fruity, a teeny bit malty.

We even bought another for a slightly intoxicated but cute wanderer-in who claimed she didn't like beer at all. She didn't like it, nor did one of her friends, but friend #2 did like it and finished it. :D

Light yellow color with a toasted bready malt taste. A nice amount of carbonation to carry the malt/mild hops. Minimal aftertaste, just a little bit of toasted malts.

This is a good introduction to craft beers to give to someone who likes maybe higher end 'mass market' beers and is ready for the next step. If I see this, I'll buy it as a nice easy summer drinking beer. Very enjoyable.

Served on draft into a goblet, Glissade pours a lustrous, deep gold color, with a head so thick you could cut it with a knife. The retention is pretty strong, too. The beer's predominant smell is malts, with some citrus in the form of lemons and orange coming through, too, kind of like the first hint of Spring. Some light hoppiness is also vaguely apparent.

Glissade is medium bodied in the mouth, with a crisp, bready flavor, and nicely carbonated to keep your interest piqued. I'm a fan, and could easily drink more than one of these -- and plan to!

This was my review of the bottle:

I had no idea what kind of beer this was when I opened it but it was very satisfying. The color was a bright gold, almost like a pilsner. Good carbonation. The flavor was a little light for a Maibock/Helles Bock but in general it was a very good beer.

---

I recently had it on draft at my local beer bar and enjoyed it about the same. Bocks are a little difficult for me. A little stronger in flavor than in alcohol but this is one of the better ones and a beer that I always come back to.

Before I review, I should note I'm not very big into maibock/helles bock, or bock in general, so this review is hardly "to style," so keep that in mind as you read. I also for some reason thought this was a seasonal pale ale before I drank it...

Had on tap at the Tap and Barrel in Smithtown, NY. Served in a pint glass.

Look: slightly hazy, golden body. The haze clears up as it warms. Nice, visible carbonation. The thin, white head dissipates fairly quickly and doesn't leave a whole lot of lacing behind.

Smell: European hops really stand out to me with a bit of sweet maltiness in the background. Spicy, herbal and grassy hops are the characters I get with a bit of toasted malt. Good.

Taste: follows the nose well, with a good deal of hoppy flavors, such as hop spice, herbs, and grassiness with some subtle toasted malt flavor. Nicely balanced.

Feel: doesn't feel like a 6.4% ABV beer, nicely balanced, nicely carbonated, and a medium to light body. As for drinkability, this is very easy drinking and I drank mine a little too fast as a result. It could make for a good, sessionable brew if you don't mind the ABV exceeding 6%.

Overall: a very solid brew. Sierra Nevada really can't get it wrong, it seems. I am pretty sure the only other Maibock/Helles Bock I've had is Dead Guy Ale and I'm not sure that one quite counts. This beer has made me realize I probably need to do some more bock drinking and keep exploring those classic, German beers. I recommend this one wholeheartedly. Cheers!

On tap at Elis. This is an ML beer... so I am very nervous as he likes crap beer. Pours a nice golden color with a white head. Smells of wheat malt, fruit, and some hops. Ok ML I'll give you a chance since you say you are hung like a burmese python and have tiger blood and are part warlock. Tastes like malt, bread, grain, and a few hops. Light body with a crisp mouthfeel. Better cold and gets maltier and worse as it warms. Only share this one with ML out on the porch on a warm day.

A: Pours a bright golden color with a small white foam head that quickly dissipates to a film. Not much lacing.

S: Wheat, honey, grass, crisp fruit and a small amount of citrus.

T: Starts off a little sweet, with some honey and fruit sugars coming through. The middle brings more malt and wheat character. The taste finishes with a mild undertone of citrus hops.

M: Nice and crisp and clean. A nice medium bodied beer.

O: A nice Maibock offering, perfect for a spring day. Clean crisp and refreshing.

Can't really knock a beer with such a cool name. Fortunately I dot hav to, because it's a pretty smooth one.

Enjoye on tap at Amity hall in Greenwich village, this brew o's golden to copper with a clear body and minimal head that doesn't really lace the glass. That's a little disappointing, bit about to be expected with the variety of beer it is - a European yeasted (German) bock that's brighter than what you'd expect on the nose. That nose is sweet, with a touh if hops and malt, but mostly yeast that smells like melting snow. Seriously, it smells like spring.

Tastes sweeter than the nose would promise, and finishes ultra clean. A bit fruity in character, it's aediuk bodied easy drinker. Cheers to SN for creating yet another craft brew that I can enjoy on a large scale.

Like i said; can't hate on that.

Also - ps - KEMBA WALKER!!!

I have the utmost respect for Sierra Nevada but I must say that I am not a fan of Golden Bocks. Coming from Colorado and trying Coors Origional, which is a pale lager, I feel that these two beers taste alike. Cooking with this beer might be a great way to bring out the flavor in a spicy chicken.

On tap from a just replaced keg.

A: Clear gold brew with just a small line of white head.

S: Hard to pick up much, maybe some wheat and bready yeast smell.

T: Malty with not much hop character, herbs and citrus.

M: Light carbonation and a thin body. Pretty refreshing.

on tap at pope in philly. served in a pint glass.

Pours a mostly clear copper and auburn color. A white head fades with essentially no retention or lacing.

Crackers and lemon grass with some citric hops. Very faint notions of orange and grapefruit.

Bitter hops with juicy citrus and lemon peel. Light cracker and biscuit malt. Slight caramel sweetness with honey touches. Finishes with grassy citrus hops and a bit of metallic flair.

Medium body and carbonation, somewhat dry and lingering. Drinks okay, but this really isn't one of their best offerings by any stretch.

A-Pours a bright golden color, minimal head, no lacing.
S-Malt hits the nose first, bit of citrus.
T=Bready malt, lemon, slight bitterness in the aftertaste. Very simple and solid, but very ordinary.
M-$ighly carbonated and bready
D=Could down a few of these, but I feel I would grow tired of it after two or three.

Had on tap at Grill One Eleven.

Appearance was very nice. Beautiful golden color but a very good looking white head.

Smell was a little lacking. Some hops, some yeasty charcter, but not much going on.

Taste was good. A lot lighter than i was expecting but lots of flavor which made it very pleasant.

Mouthfeel was good. Light and crisp and refreshing but still lots of flavor. One could definately have quite a few in one sitting.

Pours a solid gold color with a decent one-finger head that promotes attractive lacing during drinking. The nose is almost overwhelmingly sweet, but the malt is still noticeable. The taste is a good balance of malt and hops, with the former leading into the latter; the aftertaste is pleasantly bitter. Feels very smooth and crisp, and the alcohol content is almost unnoticeable.

FourthBeer potential: ABOVE AVERAGE. Tastes less like a seasonal and more like a year-round beer, in my opinion. The well-hidden alcohol makes this very drinkable.

Served on-tap in a pint glass at My Place in Newtown, Conn.

A: Clean, golden yellow, pale amber color with a dense, sudsy head of white carbonation which has a weak hold but leaves a bit of soapy lace. Carbonation is ample and the brew looks dense, yet refreshing.

S: Bready, sweet, spicy aromas rise from the brew with a bit of a citrus hop scent and buttery cracker smell. The earthy, herbal, fruity malt integrity is in effect here.

T: Somewhat grainy, bready, herbal malt flavor up front with some lingering, zesty and watery hop bitterness. If you;re in the market for a German lager, I'd go elsewhere for a better bock and outside of the brewery for a more traditional, German flair.

M: Medium bodied, crisp and somewhat refreshing bock with a lot of citrusy, hop bitterness to go along with the mostly subdued malty sweetness.

D: This pretty well-crafted maibock from Sierra Nevada carries enough wallop at nearly 6.5% ABV and a good enough balance to satiate the uninitiated spring beer drinking masses and even those who relish in a sturdy, malty and bitter grain brew to chase off the late winter chill.

On-tap at Birch & Barley/ChurchKey (Washington, DC), 3/11/2010:

The beer appeared a slightly cloudy, golden color with a decent head with some lacing.

The aroma was light, not all that impressive, grainy with a faint floral hop.

The beer had a light grainy taste to it with some bready or yeast flavor it. I am a little disappointed with this beer as I am a big fan of SN, but I also did not get the big malty or sweetness flavors that some of the other reviewers noted, so maybe it was an old keg or some other factor.

The beer had a light mouth feel but good carbonation. The beer was crisp and refreshing and pretty easy to drink given the lack of flavor that I experienced.

Given that I missed some of the flavor, I will be trying this beer again.

Beer is yellow and clear. Forms a big head that falls away quickly leaving a lot of lacing on the glass. Carbonation overall is moderate.

The aroma is a little sulfury, that doesn't excite me, and slightly grainy.

Beer is forwardly sweet with a pilsner malt tint followed by a big grain aftertaste. That's unfortunate. The carbonation is there in the mouth but there isn't anything going on in the midpalate of this beer. It seems too forward and the aftertaste is too distracting. I love you Sierra Nevada but this maibock is a definite miss.

Beer poured a golden hue, decent head and solid retention. Smells of grassy, hay and signature SN lager yeast. Very musky, malty and light aromas of noble hops as the beer warms. This is a fairly decent representation of a Maibock, but it seems a bit odd, don't know why. I had higher expectations, and I've had a few bocks that just blow this away. This comes so close flavorwise to the Summer pilsner, which I preferred to this brew.

Just my opinion, but stick to ales, guys. You do that so well and the lagers I've had just seemed underwhelming in general.

L: Pours a nice golden yellow-orange color with a medium sized and medium bodied off-white colored head that laces the glass a bit on the way down.
S: Smells of sweet roasted malts, hints of citrus, and then a really nice earthy, citrus-y, floral hop aroma at the end.
T: Tastes of sweet roasted malts, some lighter toasted ones, hints of caramel and some sugary sweetness, and then a nice smooth but crisp earthy, citrus-y, and floral hop flavor at the end.
M: Very crisp, fresh feeling, refreshing, light bodied, perfect amount of carbonation.
D: Very drinkable, I liked this one a lot. All the flavors blended well and it went down very smoothly.

On tap on Home Keg system. Kegged date not stamped.

Appearance: Clear and clean golden yellow. Nice 1' head, that remained small cusp throughout drink.

Smell: very minimal in the smell department. Bread comes immediately to mind and very little hop presence.

Taste: First sip is creamy and smoothy goodness. Leans more toward malt than hops and actually quite balanced. Not sweet dominated, which is what I like in Maibocks. Hops are present but very subdued and add more for balance than anything else. SN nailed the Maibock style and just because they are SN, this does not mean every beer should hop dominated.

Overall: my first impression of this beer was a disappointment. Not sure why but upon my next visit, this beer really grew on me. Drinkablity is perfect for several pints and this is really a very good Maibock that I will have again next year.

On tap at the Boathouse in Conshohocken

A- crystal clear golden, but light golden.

S- very much has the aroma of cold-filtered lager. There is a slight "sweet" hint in the aroma, but I have to keep quaffing snootfulls to figure it out.

T- interesting- shades of the lager smell noted above- but also a hint of bitter hops (just a hint). After continual sips, I keep comming back to "interesting". Very much like a staple lager with a hint of bitter twist.

M- not bad- feels "substantial" for a lighter looking ale.

D- this is a good everyday drinker for the budwiser guy that needs to learn of the world of caft brew- a stepping stone ;-)

Golden body with white head that leaves a decent bit of lace. Clear.

Smells of sweet malty breads and grains.

Taste is crisp and clean. The malt has a kiss of caramel, very earthy. Finishes sweet with a touch of bitterness that easily fades away.

Pours a pretty clear amber with an average white head. Aroma is crisp, fruity and somewhat sweet. Flavor is crisp, malty, fruity and sightly sweet, like a typical lager but with more complexity. Lively, edgy and tingly texture leaves a fruity and slightly hop-bitter finish.
