Served from tap into a Raleigh Rare & Vintage Beer Tasting snifter. Poured red-orange with a half finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, caramel, earth, citrus hop, caramel hop, vanilla, and wood. The flavor was of sweet malt, caramel, vanilla, caramel hop, earth, citrus, and sweet alcohol. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. The nose on this one definitely stood out over the regular version of this brew with the addition of vanilla and subtle oakiness on top of an already solid aroma. Hard to beat that if I’m honest. The rest of the brew was very solid for the style and quite easy to drink despite the ABV. Even the alcohol that was present in the flavor was very well integrated to the point that you wouldn’t even notice it unless you were truly looking for it. A really well done barrel treatment to an already solid brew. Can’t go wrong with that.

This was just incredible One of those beers you are familiar with and have tried over the years—fresh and aged—and then it’s knocked out of the park with the new characteristics barrel aging gives it.

This poured an amber color with light foam. Simply incredible aroma, with a muted hoppiness but just these great toffee and coconut notes that have emerged. The flavor has an upfront bitterness which turns into part smooth and partly sweet. I pick up candied orange, shaved coconut, and this nice piney chew. Fantastic finish. I could easily drink this one all day.
This is a fantastic beer turned extra amazing.

Served on-tap at Harry's Hofbrau in a sampling glass.

A: No head. Very murky golden brown. Translucent.

S: Fruity alcohol. Smells great!! Rich toffee malts, tropical hops(!?), and delicious whisky. Huge fan.

T: Wow. Boozy and hugely bourbony. This tastes more like a bourbon barrel aged RIS than a Barleywine. Hops are strongly bitter, but overshadowed by the caramelized sugar and great malt. The end taste is dry and long and lingeringly bitter. Very impressive.

M: Light, spicy hops; sweet sticky caramel. Hops win.

O: Truly phenomenal. One of the most exciting beers I've tried in recent memory. Highly recommended.

2007 Bourbon Bigfoot (draft) from the Toronado BWine Festival (A-)

A Poured a nice deep, deep amber as the bourbon pushed through this. You can tell the bourbon influence just by the look.

S: Medium smell of bourbon, not to overbearing and very subtle. It did not overpower the barleywine which was good. They were well balanced.

T: Taste is fully sweet, rounded malty goodness and that smooth bourbon flavor was there throughout.

M: No bite on this one.

O: Like liquid candy and one of my favorite barleywines to date.
///
2013 Bourbon Bigfoot (bottle)

A: Poured clear copper color with bubbles and a short-lived tannish colored cap which leaves behind some faint bubbles but no lacing

S: Pickle juice? Cheap bourbon, old wood, caramel and faded piney hops

T: Initial stinging booze with hop bitterness, pine needles, whiskey and old wood breakthrough as does some Earthiness. Mdway I get a bit of sticky sweetness with a light run at vanilla. The finish is looong with bittering hops a bit sticky at times

M: Medium to full body, a bit overcarbonated and thin, pickle juice comes to mind as a lingering flavor on the palate

O: Not so impressed by the bottle. A but thin, overcarbed, a light astringency and ultimate letdown compared to then draft version. It reminded me of BA Old Ruffian to a deree and thats not a positive.

Orange pour, really impressive, looks more like a dipa than the somewhat brown tones of regular bigfoot. The significant jump from 9.6% to 12.2% also makes me think that it might just be a stronger base batch, as thats a big jump from just being a in a bourbon barrel, but not impossible either. Anyways, orange pour, nice 1/3" white head on it, something you don't see every day with a barreled beer.

Good and complex aroma, obviously whiskey, maybe even some peat malt, oak, toffee, stayed away from hot alcohol sting. Even a little twinge of citrus to it.

Taste, the vanilla was much stronger than expected, but not a problem at all. Drank pretty easy. Usually, I like to either drink Bigfoot fresh, or after at least 3 years, the 2 years that this was aged made me worried it would be in an awkward teenage phase, but not at all. It is very different from fresh bigfoot, no doubt. But it is also different than 2 year old bigfoot, the barrel just really transforms this beer into something you don't (or didn't) associate with what I've come to know Bigfoot as since the mid90s.

Plenty of caramel still runs through the mouthfeel, but the hops are so far downplayed on the flavor list, you still can't believe this is Bigfoot. Its robust and strong, I don't want to say "boozy" but this is never going to be mistaken for a session ale either. I was pretty impressed, and I'm sure I'll save a bottle or two to drink in 2020 or whatnot down the road.

Presentation: On tap at the Prohibition Pig after a long day. Served in a 12 oz. tulip glass slightly chilled.

Appearance: Pours a creamy beige head with some nice retention. The lacing holds well to the glass. Medium to dark amber in color with a touch of haze.

Aroma: The whiskey from the barrels is very upfront and blends surprisingly well with the base beer. The base contributes some caramel, sherry and a touch of piney hops. The hops are definitely far more subdued than in fresh Bigfoot.

Taste: Really nice blend of the barrel and the base beer. Caramel, vanilla, whiskey, and a touch of peat all hit upfront with a bit of fused alcohol. The hops are definitely faded and don't dominate nearly as much as they do in fresh Bigfoot. They do lend a nice bitterness that offsets some of the other sweet flavors and adds some nice complexity. Drinks really smoothly.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, with nice carbonation. A big beer.

Overall, I really thought that the barrel did wonders to this beer and really added some nice new dimensions to the base beer. I got the really nice background sherry and medicinal tones of 2-3 year old Bigfoot along with really nice barrel character. It didn't feel muddled as I thought it might with the combination of the hops and the barrel. Well done. I will be looking to get a bottle or two to see how this evolves over time.

Meadhall in Cambridge for 12 Brewers of Christmas on 12/19/12.

A: Amber-brown with a decent sized off-white head that fades quickly. A bit of lace and retention. As it should look.

S: Crazy amount of bourbon & whiskey, booze, butter, butterscotch, brandy, sour, apple, wood, earth, dark fruit, brown sugar. So complex. I could probably add more but I need a sip.

T: Everything a BA American BW should have. The sweet booze and wood are there as are a great hop presence and bitterness to balance the sweetness. Great barrel presence but also plenty of roasted sweet malt. Each sip gets better. The last big swig was perfect. Tons of barrel and malt with the right touch of hops.

M: Massive flavor, smooth as hell, and dry like it should be.

O: I came to this event specifically for this beer (and to donate $ to Toys for Tots). It was totally worth it and this beer surpassed my expectations which were already high. A very special beer. Talked to the local SN rep who said this is the beer that is going into bottles in early 2013. Went into barrels in 2010. Specifically Stranahan, Jim Beam, and Heaven Hill. Supposedly a mistake but they went with it for the 30th Anniversary of Bigfoot this year. Amazing stuff.

Shocked to see 'Aged Bigfoot' on the tap list at the Beer Engine in cleveland. 5 bucks a snifter. A steal if you ask me.

Talking to the bartender, turns out this 2 year old is barrel aged.
Being a monstrous Bigfoot fan, and especially aged bigfoot, I
obviously could not resist. (Of all nights, I was wearing a bigfoot tee shirt, i was virtually obligated)

The barrel comes off very strong. The beer is incredibly smooth, which has been my experience with older vintage bigfoots. Especially for the alcohol, major smooth here.

The barrel seemed to overpower the beer a bit, to me, and obviously when you're talking barleywine, thats not a minor thing.

Overall the beer was very good, would definitely drink it again, it just was a hair off of what I would have really liked in this beer.

To me, and I love huge, huge flavorful beers, the barrel just needed to be turned down a notch so this exceptional brew gets to show itself off a bit more.

Sampled last night at Sheffields with EehaiCJ.

Small snifter, around 8-10oz. pour. Dark crimson highlights, with a compact head of light tan foam.

Aroma is big on the bourbon. Plenty of vanilla, tobacco, and mild whiskey vapors when swirled. It lasts for the half-hour duration of the tiny globular glass. Some sprucey hops squeeze through underneath, reminding me of the original Bigfoot character.

Big boozy whiskey dominates, plenty of vanilla bean, maple syrup, caramel toffee, and peppery alcohol at the end, with a lingering hop bite. It feels viscous and syrupy a little, but with some carbonation. This was very enjoyable, but the high ABV put the brakes on another one. Very potent in small doses.

2013 bottle: whiffs of coconut, big brown sugar and caramel, wet wood, lingering bitterness. Lots of dry oak, traces of dry piney hops from the base beer.

The Sierra Nevada Brewery is an amazing place to sample beers. They always have ones that you have never seen in the store or have never heard of. Last night I had wood barrel aged bigfoot. It was aged in a whiskey barrel so it ended up being 12.5% and it had a nice taste of whiskey at the end.

On-tap at the Brewkettle, Strongsville, OH 3/11/07

Listed as "Sierra Nevada Bourbon Bigfoot". Listed at 11% ABV on the board, but I assume that this is the same beer.

A: Pours a reddish-brown with a dense creamy head. Lots of lacing.

S: Fruity and malty with a noticable bourbon presence.

T: Big flavor. The same old familiar hoppy Bigfoot taste but with a strong taste the evolves from potent bourbon to a soft and complex vanilla flavor as your palate adjusts.

M: Big, thick, and silky smooth with light carbonation.

D: There are many beers that don't do well with bourbon aging. This isn't one of them. If you like Bigfoot, then you should buy copius amounts of this if given the chance.

Sampled at the 10th Annual Pizza Port Strong Ale Fest. More than shocked to see this, never knew SN did barrel aging but boy was I happy to see it. Bigfoot is one of my favorite barleywines, and to have it barrel aged….man I love this place. Is the strong ale fest what dreams are made out of?

Pours a deep amber with a slight head that dissipates quickly. Color, of course, resembles regular Bigfoot.

Smell is all Barleywine. Rich caramel with a hint of roast malts. Hops are a little toned down compared to a newly released Bigfoot, but still present. The three C's (cascade, columbus, centennial) are still in full effect though. A mellow citrus zest associated with such. A solid oak presence but don't pick up to much of the whiskey. Was only my 3rd sample at the fest so my palate and nose was still pretty fresh.

It was served a little on the cold side but the warm SoCal day warmed it up quickly for me to get the full effect. Taste was warm and soothing. The normal Bigfoot properties, hoppiness, toasted malt, caramel. The alcohol is more apparent than the regular BW. It was labeled at 12.3%, which is considerably higher than the standards Bigfoot at 9.6%. I know a slight ABV budge can come the barrel, but not that much. I imagine SN brewed a stronger version of Bigfoot for this, maybe to take the test of time better. 9.6% seems like plenty for that though. It had a strong oak taste but not much of the whiskey. I think the high ABV and full flavor of Bigfoot might have drowned it out a bit. It didn't seem to have been aged for that long though. Maybe a year tops, but who knows.

I was very excited to try this so maybe my expectations were a little high and I'm a little over critical. I always dreamt of what Bigfoot would taste like barrel aged, probably more so than any other beer. I think if it would have stayed closer to the original ABV and maybe a little longer in the barrel it would have reached perfection. As it was though, it was an amazing beer that I was more than glad to have consumed. I hope I get a second chance with this one some day.

A – Pours dark amber red with nice clarity and one fingered cream colored head that dies down quickly and leaves a thin lacing ring with no carbonation.

S - Lots of bourbon aroma, oak, vanilla, caramel, and toffee, candied brown sugar; overall the aroma is assertively boozy.

T – Follows the nose. Lots of oak tannin and bourbon up front followed by a quick hit of vanilla, caramel, dark fruit, toasted toffee, mild floral, and ends with a boozy, toffee and moderate citrus/grapefruit lingering finish.

M – Thick and full bodied, slick, viscous, and lip smacking sticky.

O – For 12.2%, this is an impressive beer because as boozy as it is, there’s very little to no alcohol burn and as the beer sits for awhile it opens up and mellows. Bigfoot is decent but age it in a barrel and the result is magic.

I have had a few of these now, but wanted to give a bottle a proper review.

Pours with a short lasting khaki head... and only has spotty lacing... the brew is polished deep amber.

Christ it is amazing how hoppy this is... thick resinous pine combines with caramel, lite vanilla and dry toast... pretty damn boozy, not from the barrels but from the 12%.. with warmth, I get something that I associate with coconut.

More barrel presence on the palate helps balance out the hoppiness... again, thicker caramel and vanilla.. hints of dried cherry.. as it warms up, the oak gets a bit drying, almost like a tannic quality... long bitter bite on the finish clashes too much with the barrel presence and the hefty

A lighter than expected carbonation accentuates an already pretty thick brew.

Honestly, a bit of a mess right now, but the bones of a great BA BW are there.. but it is going to take a long sleep in the cellar to round out the flavors/aromas. The hops and the barrel qualities fight each other too much right now.

a deep ruby red/burgundy almost black with a finger of creme colored head which gave off some nice lacing. the smell is a blast of vanilla and whiskey, caramel, sweet malt, a banana-like scent makes it overall sweet and leaning towards fruity. oh my.. the flavor is SO SO tasty. the whiskey is as mellow as it is in the central waters bourbon barrel barleywines.. i'd hate to compare it, but this is on par with that. vanilla, banana, whiskey/bourbon (sorry, don't mean to offend people but there's not much of a difference to my palate in the 2 different liquors), oak, tons of delicious sweet malt.
full body with a moderate amount of carbonation for the style. creamy and very subtle with the alcohol warmth but it does catch up to you.

this is a phenomenal beer in every aspect. as a barrel aged beer, it falls nothing short of its promise. as a barleywine, i like mine hoppy, strong, yet sweet.. this one is lacking on the hops, but is still damn close to perfect. as a barrel aged barleywine, it is delicious. a 12% abv that you don't realize until, well, it's too late.

Poured into RR -tion glass. Appearance is a slightly cloudy auburn with a centimeter of dense white head which leaves heavy lacing. The nose features plenty of Bigfoot character up front with that notable earthy hop profile which is paired with caramel and molasses. The whiskey comes through next brings Ina string presence of vanilla. The hops are also very present on the finish and seem like they may clash with the whiskey. The taste tells a different story though. The hops a present up front and are smoothed out by a hefty dose of vanilla and oak. The flavors marry together quite well and make for a smooth finish. Mouthfeel is big with moderate carbonation. Overall, I was skeptical about such a hoppy barleywine being barrel aged, but it definitely works in this case. Very tasty.

Bottle to CBS snifter. Thanks to Adam for this one!

A - Murky dark amber/brown colour with a dark ruby glow along the bottom. A thin layer of dirty white head formed on the pour.

S - Sweet whiskey and vanilla dominate the nose with caramel, toffee, maple syrup and lighter oak notes also present.

T - A huge alcohol presence is noticeable at first but then settles down, while remaining warming throughout. Whiskey, oak and vanilla come through from the barrel and are met with dark caramel, toffee, raisin and maple flavours. Good integration of barrel and base beer.

Served in a tulip glass.

Appearance: A darker cloudy amber, bubbles are heavy on the body creating a subtle head. A white-orange tinted head rose to maybe a 1/3" off the body looking real good.

Smell: You know the more you drink the scent gets better. Strong scotch with heavy vanilla; heavy malts. It's one of those type of scents that you would just want to breathe in.

Taste: You feel the alcohol right from the beginning with hints of light malt, heavy vanilla and I forget to mention the alcohol.

Mouth: Medium, and f'n sticky. I will tell you this has a little bit of dryness to it but you feel rum cask to it before even placing the glass down. Comes off a little woody, could be fermenting an aging in the barrels. Real good in my book.

Overall: After sitting in my fridge for maybe three weeks, I decided to split the bottle with my dad and what great move. To drink this on your own is just selfish, share the wealth....everyone should have a glass. Salud!

No head, and a tad clothier cloudier than the original.

Aroma is more caramel, vanilla than the regular, with a dominant whiskey kick. Slightly smoky, lots of oak character.

Hops, citrusy and resiny, still shine through the whiskey character, but the bitterness is accented nicely by oak. Slightly sweeter backbone, with caramel pitted well against citrus. Sweetness counters the overwhelming bitterness that detracted from my enjoyment of the original.

Lacking in carbonation, fairly still, and seems a bit smoother. Noticeably higher alcohol warmth.

The barrel aging adds more complexity, and I definitely enjoy the aroma more. If you're into barrel aging like I am, think you'll enjoy the added complexity.

This is not my favorite barley wine every year but the aging process has stepped up the Bigfoot to something truely amazing. The big ABV on this beer is masked by incredible sweetness and coconut flavors. The medium bodied brew gives an initial taste of caramel malt and slight hop bitterness which is quickly consumed buy the sweeter notes imparted by the barrel aging. I am very excited to try my second bottle in a year or so, if I can wait that long to break it open!

2013 edition

A: Pours a very dark brown with an enormous frothy tan head. Fades slowly, leaving thin but widespread lacing behind. Decent head retention.

S: Whiskey and lots of it. Does not smell far from an actual bottle of whiskey. Huge amounts of caramel and burnt sugar. Lots of toffee and vanilla. Candied dark fruits. A little oak and some brown sugar to boot. Strong aromas and quite boozy.

T: Welp, more whiskey. Not as super strong as in the aroma but still quite big. Again with the caramel and toffee notes, big time. Candied dark fruits again, primarily raisin. Surprising burst of hops too, primarily pine and resin, I guess they survived the barrel aging. More caramel into the finish with a little wave of bitterness from the hops. The sweet caramel and maltiness in general really reminds me of a peanut brittle (without the peanut brittle of course). Never really got that flavor in a beer but here it is. Big alcohol sting from start to finish, very sharp and boozy beer.

M: Smooth and fairly heavy but it is cut nicely by all of the whiskey. Not nearly as thick as you'd expect.

O: I'm a big fan of bigfoot but I'm not sure this is an improvement. It's a vastly different beer. The barrel aging is so strong (and pleasant, I must admit), it obliterates a lot of the base beer. As a result it becomes a bit unbalanced I must say. Having said that, this is still delicious, especially for a whiskey lover. But it's very boozy and harsh, some age might really improve it I think (not that regular Bigfoot doesn't improve with age too). I enjoyed it but I think I enjoy regular bigfoot more.

From NOTB notes last month.

a - Pours a murky, mahogany brown color with an inch of off white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of whiskey, caramel malts, a bit musty, toffee, bready malts, toasted malts, and some herbal notes.

t - Tastes of whiskey, tea, herbal notes, floral notes, caramel malts, toasted malts, toffee, roasted malts, earthy notes, mustiness. A bit hot but I like it.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Some light alcohol heat.

o - Overall a nice beer, though I didn't think it was a big improvment on the base beer. Lots of whiskey and caramel, if you're one of those people who love the normal Bigfoot you'll probably love this one. I've always thought Bigfoot was very good, but not great, and would say the same with this. Have a bottle of this and plan on sitting on it for a while.
