Bottled 05/22/12. Poured into a nonic glass.

Pours a very dark cola color with about a finger of beige-colored foam. The head looks dense and it's sparkling at me. I wish I had another third of a bottle to finish filling this big imperial pint glass.

Moderately roasty aroma with some rough grain notes and an earthy whiff of wet autumn leaves. Some very light sweetness is attached to the nose, but in the form of carryover wort sugars. Hints of coffee and yew berries. Nice aromas overall.

Earthy flavors follow the nose, but with an added brightness. The zip comes from some mellow citrus and floral hops and the subsequent bitterness. The coffee is light, and now there's a soft note of chocolate. Very light tartness, like unripe seed fruits. Very simple, but very good.

Dextrins are good and chewy. Finishes clean with an outro of burpy gas. A feel-good belcher. Body is medium and mostly dry. Drinks like a racecar drives.

Sierra Nevada Porter is not trying to be anything really complex, just a great six-pack selection off the shelf. Works as a cool weather or cold weather beer to great effect. I will never turn this beer down, and I'd have trouble skipping ordering one if I ever see it on-tap. Unfortunately, I never see it on-tap. And, I'd like to. Starting now.

Deep ruby to an almost brown color this is really a beautiful beer but it's body was just average with not much head and no lacing.

Malty goodness and dry chocolate and coffee strike the nose quite pleasantly. Stout like qualities in the nose it's very nice yet weaker than most.

Smooth is a good way to described the taste and feel. Dry chocolate notes mixed with roasted coffee and an underlining of grainy malt.

Overall, this is typical of Sierra Nevada, good classically flavored examples that are well worth the time and money...but don't go beyond.

A - A slightly lighter colour than most porters I've had. Cola like - dark brown with dark red around the edges. Thick, mocha head which remains throghout

S - Roasted malts. A little coffee and dark chocolate. No hops.

T - Roasted malts up and caramel up front. Pleasant taste, but there is not quite as much flavour as I'd like. Very nice burnt, balanced aftertaste. The bitter hops just come through along with a sweet caramel. Moreish.

M - Pretty nice - medium thickness. Coats the mouth well. Nice twang from the carbonation

O - Didn't blow me away, but pleasant and very drinkable. Would make a solid session porter.

Poured from the bottle to a mug.

Look: A deep dark with a half finger head that quickly went away. A small ring of foam stayed behind to create some decent lacing.

Smell: Mmmmm, chocolate, with also a bit of burnt caramel. It was also persistent and didn't fall off until near the end, which is something I always look for in a brew.

Taste: Follows the nose closely. The cocoa/caramel balance out quite nicely. A very light bit of coffee is in there, near the back of the throat for me, maybe it's the black and carafa malts. Either way, pretty decent.

Feel: A light cream texture balanced well with the bite of carbonation.

Overall: A pretty good brew. I'm not too versed in the world of Porters just yet, but I like this one very well. It's light enough where I would open one up after a bit of yard work with no problem. Definitely good.
